Any computer experts here?

Yo.. we are talking about DOS command prompt - x-system administrator mode. Doing it from windows mode is ok as long the system permits it.

merely highlighting a fact that he thought the danger of wiping out all drive only occurs in dos.

anyway personally i find dos commands are no longer as useful after win 2000 era, majority of the things be perform in windows. even for drive management, it could be done with ease in windows mode now. Currently only 3 commands remain in my head, ping, tracert and ipconfig to check connections in my network.Maybe its just because i am a normal user most of the time and what i know is enough to solve problem for average user that why i felt this way

.

It is important when you need to do trouble shooting and certain actions cannot be executed while in windows mode / F8 boot up. The repair / installation CD will then have to come into use.

Windows 98 was the last version of Windows in which you can issue a direct FDISK or FORMAT DOS command. Versions after that won't allow it since there's no more real mode. You must issue it from a boot disk. It's a good protection too since some idiots may cleanup the OS and keep pestering technical support.

At the stage of development now, DOS commands are quite obsolete since Vista. The Vista disk will allow you to partition and format from point-and-click GUI instead of having to type in command lines.

i used to keep a 95 or is it win ME disc to enter dos mode just for that purpose. but when i come across partition magic (no longer usable in ntfs system), i throw the discs away. Now its just like what you say everything can be perform under computer management. things has really come very far if we looked at all the improvement

Reformatting your hard disk only erases away the data but it is still there except that it's not visible to the human eye. If you keep reformatting it, it will only overwrite the data and create layers of it. XP has this NTDLR problem from over reformatting of your hard disks.

You can create a system image disk or backup your data using Windows backup and restore but 1 Key Ghost is popular.

Ramseth : Where's GMS when we need a computer expert?

GMS : Sorry, political advice is free, computer advice is S$50 to begin with.

@Cannonfairy,

Dont know what win ver OS you are currently running; but this is one site for Win XP you may find useful.

http://www.pcscom.com/windows_xp_shutdown.htm

WINDOWS XP
SHUTDOWN & RESTART
TROUBLESHOOTING

Shutdown problems in Windows XP can be caused by many factors, just like earlier versions of Windows. These included: a damaged exit sound file; incorrectly configured, damaged, or incompatible hardware; conflicting programs, or an incompatible, damaged, or conflicting device driver.

For a step-by-step troubleshooting method that applies to all versions of Windows 9x, see the generic Windows Shutdown Troubleshooter. Some of its steps may be found to apply to Windows XP as well, though many will not.

I'm using a Lenovo ideapad u450p. It has this quirky bug of being able to turn on the integrated cam sometimes and sometimes not when booting up. Also, you can never know in advance which. at cold boot stage, you also dont have anywhere to turn it on. Anybody knows why and how?

Actually i do not wish to comment on China brands because i have blacklisted them. Don't you think that it's scary to have someone recording your private life and activities? I have read it somewhere on the internet that for a case like yours, your PC could have been hacked or a malware installed to control your webcam. You should immediately disable it or tape it with a black tape when not in use. The next thing you don't wanna see are video clips of your private life circulating on the web. I am not exaggerating but this should not be happening. Other than that it will have to be your software or hardware problem.

I tried to revive a thumb drive on command line, using MBR x:/ recently, it was like getting a dinosaur to walk on an expressway..hmmm!!. I still have a head of many DOS commands. who says the commands are obsolete..try chk c:\ missed those $p $g, and changing the dos prompt in various colours, which in the past, made some of my old days, female colleague think that, their PC is out of order... ha ha ha

Tks bro. I shld think my problem isnt so scary or conspiratorial. Since my cam doesnt wrk anyway. whoever hacked it cannot see what I am doing anyway. Yr suggested cause oso cant be tenable 'cos the laptop isnt even fully loaded yet and internet conn is not up yet, so I wont be in harm's way.

I suspect it's a firmware and software incompat issue.
