well mongolia empire under khan is very impressive

but the days of modern weapon of axe, knife, sword and bow/arrow are over.

now we have stealth fighter, nuclear bomb, gps bomb and cruise missile, therefore mongolia will never going to repeat what khan did.

unless they go to high technology like japan.

You know how fiercely proud the Nips are of their culture. One of the former yokozuna was a Hawaiian and had a Jap name too.

I think the Mongolian language today is written using Russian.
Its not from russian. there is some element of it, but not part of russian.

it was kublai khan his grandson who sent a fleet to japan, which was destroyed by a typhoon.

You are right that Kublai Khan was the one who attempted to invade Japan and yes, the fleet was destroyed by typhoon.

Just watched a documentary a couple of weeks back on this Jap who did a lot of research to uncover the story on Kublai Khan's attempt to conquer Japan.

He found relics of the ships used by Kublai Khan's forces under the sea off a southern Japanese island called Takashima.

Interesting facts I remembered from that documentary for those interested:

1. 4,400 ships were used for the failed invasion. Fleet of this size was only matched by the invasion of Europe by the allies towards the end of 2nd world war.

2. Evidence was discovered from the wrecks that the mongols had the first exploding missile launched by large catapults from the ships. As far as modern artillary of the time, the mongolians far outgunned the Japanese.

3. The invasion failed because of a mix of many reasons that led to its destruction by a typhoon.

4. The mongols made landings on Japanese soil. However, their artillery might was no match for the Japanese samurais who were experts at close combat and the mongols had to withdraw to their ships.

5. The ships were built by the Chinese who were at that time the best ship builders but possibly because of their resentment of their conquerors, the mongols, they built major errors into the ships.

6. Kublai Khan's impatience in trying to conquer Japan quickly was a major contributor to the failed invasion from the start. The ships would have normally required about 2 to 4 years to build were forced to be completed in less than a year on his orders.

7. Ships were built without keels and with low draft (in other words, river boat designs) which gave the ships minimal stability in the open sea.

8. All of the mongols, including the general were not trained for the sea and have limited knowledge on ships. When the typhoon struck he did not know how to get the whole fleet to hunker down to protect themselves. There were some survivors including the general.

That's the gist.

Ah Guan,

You are most welcome and happy to hear that you find it informative. It was just a gist/summary of that documentary.

Is the DVD "Mongol" you recommend, in English? Will certainly look for the DVD. I am not in Singapore so will have to search for it. I am sure it will be as good as you said it is.

Thank you for the recommendation.

OK, thanks. At least there's English sub-titles. Mongolian is not in my list of languages I understand. Haha! But I am sure I will enjoy.

History like this always fascinates me that's why I appreciate your recommendation.
