SINGAPORE - Facing more than 300 charges of breaking into hundreds of places including childcare centres, Malaysian Ong Yeow Kong was jailed eight years and five months yesterday.

Ong, 49, was also given five strokes of the cane for overstaying. He had overstayed in Singapore for almost 23 years and had stolen more than $300,000 when he was caught on May 3 - after he used a screwdriver to break into the Metropolitan YMCA Childcare and Development Centre in Pasir Ris and stole $600.

The court heard that Ong came to work in Singapore in 1978 and he last worked in a company in Kallang Place, until his work permit was cancelled on Nov 11, 1987. Ng Jing Yng
