to all singaporeans with a heart, please vote out PAP as they have not done a good job at all.please don't read and believe all the news from mainstream media, do your part and vote out PAP. they pay themselves millions and there are people like the auntie in the article still slogging at her old age.

we want free healthcare and welfare, not this kind of life when you are old.

PAP is high handed political party where they can hoodwink you into believing that they are the best party in s'pore, if you are a true blue singaporean, vote them out.

Last night, I couldn’t help but notice an elderly lady, half my height, frail and fragile, dragging her weak body across the food-court to clear the plates on the table. I thought to myself, she’s got to be at least 70 years old!

Out of curiosity, I approached her and asked – “Aunty, how are you? You’re looking strong! How old are you this year?”. “75″, she replied. With this conversation starter (which would probably get me rejected by any other lady), I uncovered her story…

Mdm Feng is 75 this year and lives with her 72 year old sister who suffers from speech disability. In their Toa Payoh flat, these two ladies make barely enough to cover their food, transport and medical bills each month.

At 75 years old, Mdm Feng works from 5pm-10pm everyday, drawing a salary of $5 an hour. $700 a month.

“Why do you still have to work at this age?”, I asked.

“I have to continue to work while my body allows me to, or else, when my body fails me, who can I turn to for help?”, she responded.

Unfortunately, Mdm Feng is single and has a mute sister as her only kin. She needs to work; she has to work. At 75, frail and weak, I wonder how long her runway will extend before the grave calls. Does she literally have to work to her grave?

A social safety net. Welfare support. Buzzwords? This isn’t an issue about politics or power, but what and how we want to collectively define our society and measure our performance beyond dollars and cents. How can we strive for greater equality? How can we provide greater support to a entire class in need? I agree that extreme state welfare may breed laziness, but surely there is room to diligently increase support in the right areas?

This introduces a moral dilemma – what is a right area? I don’t have an answer, but we need to collectively define the future of this society, and I hope we’ll be at a place where a 75 year old will no longer have to work to her grave in order to live. The irony of it all.

The marks of a first-world society – what does it mean to you?

there is nothing wrong if you can continue to work

there is no shame at all

why blame the government

i know many singaporeans in their 70s and 80s who are healthy and who are happy working

extra pocket money and economic independence

many are living it up too

Hear this kind of story very sad..

A real first world country will take care of the old .. i think the first world is for the ministers themselves and not for the people.

When white head Tony could give away millions to pinoy land like ang pau, why could not pappies give free health care to all elderly citizens of this country? Help the needy elderly to live a dignified life. Pappies are really shit.

Yeah, makes it a worthy cause to push at least $10 into her hands in appreciation of her determination to stay alive and dignified.

The old aunty works because she does not have enough money or the cash handouts from Govt are not enough. She is different from other elderly workers who work to pass the time out of boredom. Two different kinds of world.

Pappies must give free healthcare and financial help to those who cannot work but still forced by circumstance to work to stay alive.

i dun think that lky really mind that his party get voted out, recent times, there are too many dirt being sorted out within his party, like michael palmer and laura ong.

dont be jealous lah
i am happily and richly rewarded for my efforts
under the peaceful and prosperous pap government
you missed the boat your business
dont blame anyone but yourself

wtf? The thread started that she didn't have a choice and needed to work if not she won't have any money to survive wtf are you ranting on?

you know her well enough to understand she has no choice
what biased news you are reading

she is bored at home and she has to work to have a meaningful life
there is no need for her to work
there is no need for any singaporean to be a cardboard lady
there is no need for any singaporean to beg and to sleep in the corridor
if you make a study of these people
you will be shocked.....singapore is in fact a nice place for seniors and elders

I have done a deep and profound study of these elderly workers.

Their sad stories are not entirely true.

Many work to avoid other socio-economic problems at home
and many work out of spite and out of sheer anger and frustration

Many family members never want them to work and many never want
their elderly folks to be cardboard ladies or tissue uncles

All the sad stories are used to make our benevolent government look bad
How many of your elderly parents work like this old lady

serious? Must be truly fun to work as a cleaner for dirty plates left behind.
