A 69 year old Singapore lady by the name of Li Mei Xiang committed suicide yesterday by jumping from the 13th level of her flat. The reason behind her suicide is believed financial distress.

She had been living in a 3-room HDB flat together with her husband and son before her death.

Her husband, a retired taxi-driver was diagnosed with colon cancer last year November and is currently undergoing treatment. Her 30 year old son has been unemployed for the last three months.

Madam Li used to work as a cleaner, but stopped work recently as a result of poor health.

Cases like such are not uncommon in Singapore. Lianhe Wanbao reported a 74 year old elderly lady who jumped from her flat a few months ago due to worries about her medical expenses.

There is a common saying among Singaporeans – “One can afford to die, but not fall sick in Singapore.”

Though the government claimed that public healthcare is “heavily subsidized” in Singapore, some Singaporeans still find it expensive.

A major or chronic illness can easily wipe out one’s savings. The Ministry of Health is considering increasing the Medisave contributions of Singaporeans.

Singaporeans are finding it harder to retire in Singapore in the face of rising cost of living. The ruling party has exhorted Singaporeans to work for as long as possible to support themselves.

While Singapore is the second richest nation in Asia after Japan and its two sovereign wealth funds can afford to lose billions of dollars in failed overseas investments, Singaporeans enjoy few social welfare benefits compared to other developed nations.

It's an extremely sad but cruel fact of life in Singapore that many Singaporeans are in great financial distress due to the government policies which offer few social welfare benefits compared to other less developed nations.

Only the rich and powerful get richer & continue to live in luxury while the rest of the " lesser mortals " live in misery, continue to waste away and ultimately, die in poverty.

Some said that "No one will be left behind".

When that someone said that "No one will be left behind" he is referring to he and his croonies... when did that someone ever thought for the SINGAPORE Serfs?

And it's truly sad that the old people are committing suicide... I suggest that when anyone is truly in trouble financially, there is some social welfare system in place, and although it's a meager amount, but it's still survival...

do not worry about face value when it comes to survival... just go to the Town Council, and ask for Welfare... this is something serious...

If the Government is not even willing to help those who truely need help, then what use is it for the Government? What's the point of election?

 I am just surprised to see more of such news in SINGAPORE... from 1st World to 3rd, and from 3rd to Imperialism, and from Imperialism to Fueduelism... and next Anarchy.

The real issue is that these guys seem unable or unwilling to go and find the real hardship cases which need to be helped. Instead, they classify all cases under the umbrella of not wanting to help themselves and expect the government to help them.
Really hard hearted.

Things will only get worse.....UNLESS!

Many of those in their sixties of late fifties now have already paid off their mortgage (after 10 to 20 years).

The coming years will see many who bought properties at their peak (1995-1997) or those who have mortgages of 30 years or more. They will be retiring soon (if they are already not retrenched or jobs taken over by FT's)
will little if anything left in their CPF.Some of their kids are just starting to work and with prices of HDB at historical high-it will be a double whammy-both parents and children buying properties at historical high.

Many kids will not be able to support their parents due to the high commitment on housing loans repayment.Be prepared for many heartbreak cases-unless the 66% wake up their ideas and do the right thing in the next election.

Rescue our children (and yourself) from a life of misery before its too late.
Before all the billions of our hard earned savings and reserves are spent on rescuing failed foreign companies.

Simple....They are only trained to deal with symptoms never the root cause, whereas can they expect to generate continuous income? cure root cause of sickness= stop going back for more appointments=no income generated. Got it?

"A major or chronic illness can easily wipe out one’s savings. "

This sentence is very true.

Remember to buy Health Insurance.
