Tripoli: Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril confirmed Gaddafi had been killed. "We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Muammar Gaddafi has been killed," Jibril told a news conference in the capital Tripoli.

Initial reports from fighters said Gaddafi had been holed up with the last of his fighters in the furious battle with revolutionary fighters assaulting the last few buildings they held in his Mediterranean coastal hometown of Sirte.

Blasted

At one point, a convoy tried to flee the area and was blasted by Nato airstrikes, though it was not clear if Gaddafi was in the vehicle.

Al Jazeera TV showed footage of a man resembling the 69-year-old Gaddafi lying dead or severely wounded, bleeding from the head and stripped to the waist as fighters rolled him over on the pavement.

Body on display

Witnesses said his body was put on display in the nearby city of Misrata.

Celebratory gunfire and cries of "Allahu Akbar" or "God is Great" rang out across the capital Tripoli as the reports spread. Cars honked their horns and people hugged each other.

In Sirte, the ecstatic former rebels celebrated the city's fall after weeks of bloody siege by firing endless rounds into the sky, pumping their guns, knives and even a meat cleaver in the air and singing the national anthem.

Libya's new leaders had said they would declare the country's "liberation" after the fall of Sirte. The death or capture of Gaddafi adds greater solidity to that declaration.

Welcomed

Rome: Western leaders welcomed the death of former Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi as the end of despotism, tyranny, dictatorship and ultimately war in the north African country.

"It is an historic moment. It is the end of tyranny and dictatorship. Gaddafi has met his fate," said a spokesman for the National Transitional Council (NTC), Libya's new rulers, in announcing the news.

As Libyans on the streets of Tripoli and Sirte fired automatic weapons into the air and danced for joy, world leaders began to weigh in on the death of the man who had ruled the oil-rich north African nation for more than 40 years.

Rome

In Rome, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said after the death of his onetime ally: "Now the war is over."

"Sic transit gloria mundi (Thus passes the glory of the world)," Berlusconi said about the ousted ruler of Italy's former colony, quoting a Latin tag.

European Union

In Brussels, the European Union said that Gaddafi's death "marks the end of an era of despotism."

The news means an end also to the "repression from which the Libyan people have suffered for too long," EU president Herman Van Rompuy Van Rompuy said in a joint statement with European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso.

European Parliament president Jerzy Buzek will visit Libya from Saturday.

"I am happy I will be visiting a country fully liberated from a dictator who has imposed his iron fist for more than 40 years. Now Libya can truly turn the page," he said.

Washington

In Washington, senior US Senator John McCain said the death marked the end of the first phase of the Libyan revolution.

"While some final fighting continues, the Libyan people have liberated their country," the Republican lawmaker said in a statement.

"Now the Libyan people can focus all of their immense talents on strengthening their national unity, rebuilding their country and economy, proceeding with their democratic transition, and safeguarding the dignity and human rights of all Libyans," said McCain.

"The United States, along with our European allies and Arab partners, must now deepen our support for the Libyan people, as they work to make the next phase of their democratic revolution as successful as the fight to free their country," he said.

Gaddafi was fatally wounded when new regime forces launched a final assault on the last pocket of resistance in his hometown Sirte, a National Transitional Council spokesman said.

"We announce to the world that Kadhafi has died in the custody of the revolution," Abdul Hafez Ghoga said.

"It is an historic moment. It is the end of tyranny and dictatorship. Kadhafi has met his fate," he added.

Died of wounds

Deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi died of wounds suffered in his capture near his hometown of Sirte on Thursday, a senior National Transitional Council military official said.

The NTC official, Abdel Majid Mlegta, had told Reuters earlier that Gaddafi was captured and wounded in both legs at dawn on Thursday as he tried to flee in a convoy which Nato warplanes had attacked.

"He was also hit in his head," said Mlegta. "There was a lot of firing against his group and he died."

Asked if there was photographic evidence to prove that Gaddafi was dead, Mlegta said: "We have the footage but it is not available now."

There was no independent confirmation of his remarks.

Mlegta reported Gaddafi's death after Libyan interim government fighters took Sirte on Thursday, extinguishing the last significant resistance by forces loyal to the former leader and ending a two-month siege.

Nato warplanes struck the convoy and hit four cars as it headed west, Mlegta said, adding that the head of Gaddafi's armed forces Abu Bakr Younus Jabr had been killed during the attack.

Ahmad Ebrahim, a cousin and adviser of Gaddafi, was captured along with former government spokesman Moussa Ebrahim, he added.

An anti-Gaddafi fighter said Gaddafi had been found hiding in a hole in the ground and had said "Don't shoot, don't shoot" to the men who grabbed him. His capture followed within minutes of the fall of Sirte, a development that extinguished the last significant resistance by forces loyal to the deposed leader.

The head of Gaddafi's armed forces Abu Bakr Younus Jabr had been killed during the capture of the Libyan ex-leader.

No confirmation yet

US officials on Thursday scrambled to check reports that Gaddafi had died. However, the US State Department said it could not confirm that Gaddafi has been captured and wounded.

"We've seen the media reports but can't confirm them," State Department spokeswoman Beth Gosselin told Reuters.

Medvedev speaks up

Meanwhile, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Thursday that the Libyan people should decide the fate ofGaddafi, and that he hoped peace would come to Libya.

Medvedev spoke after a meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who said the deposed Libya leader's capture was great news if confirmed.

NTC leader to address Libyan nation

The head of Libya's National Transitional Council, Mustafa Abdel Jalil, will address the nation on Thursday, Libyan channel Free Libya reported, after a senior NTC military official announced the capture and death of deposed leader Muammar Gaddafi.

NTC fighters hoisted the red, black and green national flag above a large utilities building in the centre of a newly-captured Sirte neighbourhood and celebratory gunfire broke out among their ecstatic and relieved comrades.

Hundreds of NTC troops had surrounded the Mediterranean coastal town for weeks in a chaotic struggle that killed and wounded scores of the besieging forces and an unknown number of defenders.

NTC fighters said there were a large number of corpses inside the last redoubts of the Gaddafi troops. It was not immediately possible to verify that information.

Have not seen that movie.

However that inevitable fact is that everyone have to die. No matter how & no matter who.

For a fighter / warrior it is their honour to die in their fight, kill enemy and get killed. I think it is much better than those people dying for age or ailment which in most cases die in long suffering and pains. Aging is already a long suffer before mati. Like LKy old dog he is already tasting that. Ass Loong already tasted cancer. Gaddafi tasted bullets and I think his suffering was damn short compared to what LKy & Son already been through.:wink:

I think it is a mercy that Gaddafi's enemies did not call in doctors, to prolong his pains. Saddam suffer in a cell long time before being hung.

Gaddafi is not classified as a Socialist nor Islamic leader.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muammar_Gaddafi#Assassination_attempts

Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi[1] (Arabic: مُعَمَّر القَذَّافِي‎ Muʿammar al-Qaḏḏāfī About this sound audio (help·info);[variations] 7 June 1942 – 20 October 2011), commonly known as Muammar Gaddafi play /ˈmoʊ.əmɑr ɡəˈdɑːfi/ or Colonel Gaddafi, was the autocratic ruler[2][3] of Libya, from 1969 when he seized power in a military coup, until 2011 when his government was overthrown by a NATO-backed rebel force in a civil war. His 42-year rule prior to the uprising made him the fourth longest-ruling non-royal leader since 1900, as well as the longest-ruling Arab leader.[4] He variously styled himself as 'the Brother Leader', 'Guide of the Revolution', and the 'King of Kings'.[5]

After seizing power in 1969, he abolished the Libyan Constitution of 1951 and imposed laws based on the political ideology[6] he had formulated, called the Third International Theory and published in The Green Book.[7][8] Gaddafi and his relatives took over much of the economy. Gaddafi started several wars, and acquired chemical weapons.[9] Gaddafi also supplied weapons to the Irish Republican Army, a listed terrorist organisation in the United Kingdom and other countries. The United Nations called Libya under Gaddafi a pariah state.[10][11] In the 1980s, countries around the world imposed sanctions against Gaddafi.[12] Six days after the capture of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein by United States troops,[13] Gaddafi renounced Tripoli’s weapons of mass destruction (WMD) programs and welcomed international inspections to verify that he would follow through on the commitment.[14] A leading advocate for a United States of Africa, he served as Chairperson of the African Union (AU) from 2 February 2009 to 31 January 2010.

During Gaddafi's period of rule many of Libya's human development indicators improved significantly. By 2010, Libya had the highest GDP per capita,[15] Education Index,[16] and Human Development Index[17] in Africa as well as some of the best health indicators in the continent.[18][19][20]

In February 2011, following revolutions in neighbouring Egypt and Tunisia, protests against Gaddafi's rule began. These escalated into an uprising that spread across the country, with the forces opposing Gaddafi establishing a government based in Benghazi named the National Transitional Council(NTC). This led to the 2011 Libyan Civil War, which included a NATO-controlled international military intervention to enforce a UN Security Council resolution calling for a no-fly zone in Libya. The assets of Gaddafi and his family were frozen, and both Interpol and the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on 27 June for Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam, and his brother-in-law Abdullah al-Senussi, concerning crimes against humanity.[1][21][22] [23] Gaddafi and his forces lost the Battle of Tripoli in August, and on 16 September 2011 the NTC took Libya's seat at the UN, replacing Gaddafi. [24] Gaddafi retained control over parts of Libya, most notably the city of Sirte, to which it was presumed that he had fled. [25] Although Gaddafi's forces initially held out against the NTC's advances, Gaddafi was killed as Sirte fell to the rebel forces on 20 October 2011.[26]

Americans are fighting from Wall Street to every corner of the globe now against Capitalism and towards Socialism in a certain way. However, I know for sure that the real emerging power after the capitalism is decapitated will be something other than Socialism Communism & Islamic, it would be something new and much more FEARED by majority.

Rome: Western leaders welcomed the death of former Libyan strongman Muammar Gaddafi as the end of despotism, tyranny, dictatorship and ultimately war in the north African country.

So they helped install an extreme government that will rule people with extreme laws.

While reports surrounding the circumstances of Muammar Gaddafi's death remain murky, amateur footage combined
with eyewitness accounts tell a dramatic story of the toppled leader's last stand.
Shortly before dawn prayers on Thursday, Gaddafi surrounded by a few dozen loyal bodyguards and accompanied by
Abu Bakr Younis Jabr, the head of his now defeated army, broke out of Sirte where his loyalists had been embroiled
in fierce gun battles with NTC fighters for two months.
Gaddafi headed west in an armed convoy of 15 trucks, but did not
get far. NATO said that one of its aircraft struck the convoy near
Sirte at about 8:30 am on Thursday.
Gerard Longuet, French defence minister, later confirmed that the
attack - which destroyed all 15 trucks and killed 50 of Gaddafi’s
men - was executed by the French air force.
However, Gaddafi himself and a handful of his men escaped death and appear to have run through a strand of trees
towards the main road and hid in two drainage pipes.
Gaddafi’s capture
Gaddafi and his men attempted to hide from a unit of NTC fighters who had pursued the convoy, but were quickly
located.
"At first we fired at them with anti-aircraft guns, but it was no use," Salem Bakeer, a member of the NTC fighters’ unit,
said. "Then we went in on foot.Source: Al Jazeera and agencies
said. "Then we went in on foot.
"One of Gaddafi's men came out waving his rifle in the air and shouting surrender, but as soon as he saw my face he
started shooting at me," he told Reuters news agency.
"Then I think Gaddafi must have told them to stop. 'My master is here, my master is here', he said, 'Muammar
Gaddafi is here and he is wounded'," Bakeer said.
"We went in and brought Gaddafi out. He was saying 'What's wrong? What's wrong? What's going on?'. Then we took
him and put him in the car," Bakeer said.
At the time of capture, Gaddafi was already wounded with gunshots to his leg and to his back, Bakeer said.
Other government fighters who said that they took part in Gaddafi's capture, separately confirmed Bakeer's version of
events, though one said the man who ruled Libya for 42 years was shot and wounded at the last minute by one of his
own men.
"One of Muammar Gaddafi's guards shot him in the chest," Omran Jouma Shawan said.
Amateur footage uploaded on YouTube seemed to corroborate claims that Gaddafi was captured alive.
In the video, a bloodied and dazed Gaddafi can be seen being propped up by two NTC fighters, as others grab at him
and cheer "God is Great!".
The leader’s bodyguards were all killed.
Gaddafi dies
After his capture, Gaddafi was placed in an ambulance bound for the city of Misrata. Witnesses say that he
succumbed to his wounds while on the road.
However, Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril told a news conference on Thursday that Gaddafi was not fatally wounded
when placed in the ambulance, but killed when crossfire broke out in mid transport.
"Gaddafi was taken out of a sewage pipe ... he didn't show any resistance. When we started moving him he was hit
by a bullet in his right arm and when they put him in a truck he did not have any other injuries'," Jibril said.
"When the car was moving it was caught in crossfire between the revolutionaries and Gaddafi forces in which he was
hit by a bullet in the head.
"The forensic doctor could not tell if it came from the revolutionaries or from Gaddafi's forces."
Jibril said Gaddafi died a few minutes before reaching a hospital.
While it is not clear what happened afterwards, another amateur video, presumably shot by an NTC fighter, shows a
lifeless Gaddafi being dragged on the floor and sprawled out for a cheering crowd of fighters to see.
Gaddafi’s body was later loaded into a truck and taken to an undisclosed location.
“Gaddafi’s body is with our unit in a car and we are taking the body to a secret place for security reasons,” Mohamed
Abdel Kafi, a NTC official in the city of Misrata said.
The final irony of Gaddafi's life, which was strewn with eccentric and often-ironic anecdotes, was not lost on the
victorious fighters, who Gaddafi had often decried as “rats”.
“He called us rats, but look where we found him,” Ahmed al-Sahati, a 27-year-old fighter, standing next to a drainage
pipe where the former leader was found, said.
