MP for Nee Soon GRC, Ms Lee Bee Wah (right) and her husband, Mr Soh Chee Hiang, take Blackie for a walk.
Blackie the mongrel was found abandoned at Yishun Stadium in 2004, brought by a resident to a void deck in Yishun Street 81, her "home" for three years, until a complaint animal control officers were sent into the area, galvanising over 70 residents into action.
Don't put her down, they said. All right, said MP for Nee Soon GRC, Ms Lee Bee Wah who came to the rescue and adopted the dog.
The dog is eight now (56 in human years), and less of a celebrity. But residents of Yishun Street 81 still remember her fondly. One resident recalls how Blackie was a constant "listening" companion when she grieved for her daughter who died of a blood disorder. The dog was also a fixture at community events.
In a week where a national athlete has been raked over the coals for a hit-and-run with a dog, where statistics show that animal cruelty has gone up, and horrendous pictures of cats caught in glueboard traps have surfaced, the care that Blackie has received is a heartwarming account.
