KOTA KINABALU: Police will launch a crackdown on illegal fireworks after a firework exploded in the face of a 26-year-old man on the first day of Chinese New Year, killing him instantly.
State police commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib yesterday said authorities would look into how and where the victim had obtained the firework as they were monitoring the situation statewide.
He said the public are not allowed to play any type of fireworks except two types of firecrackers, namely ‘Pop-Pop’ and ‘Happy Boom’ which are considered not dangerous.
“In cases like city carnivals where firework displays are involved, an application has to be sent to the city police chief which would then be forwarded to me for approval.
“I will decide whether it is feasible to allow the firework shows,” he said, adding companies with licences to import firecrackers needed to verify with the police the items they were selling.
In the horrifying incident on the first day of the Lunar New Year, By Shaow Yong was instantly killed after a malfunctioned firework that did not go off, suddenly exploded in his face when he went to check on it.
It is said that Yong, the only son of four siblings, had lit up two sets of fireworks, to usher in the auspicious lunar New Year in front of his family’s residence at Taman Seputih in Luyang here.
Family members, including his pregnant wife, in her 20s, whom Yong had just married last December, watched gleefully after the first one blasted into the sky and exploded into an array of a wonderful firework display.
However, the second firework remained on the ground after the fuse burnt out, prompting Yong to inspect the explosive.
Just as he went nearer to have a look at the firework, it exploded, causing severe injuries to his face and head. He was killed instantly.
Family members rushed to Yong’s lifeless body and sat him in front of their house in disbelief that they had lost a son, a brother and a husband.
Neighbours immediately informed the police and a team led by City deputy police chief Superintendent Chandrasehkaran Muthu, were at the scene to carry out investigation.
Yong’s body was later taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a police truck.
Meanwhile, City police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sofi Zakaria said the accident was tragic and warned the public not to play with firecrackers or fireworks.
“These items are prohibited and they can be very dangerous and lethal as was the case here.
“The police will always monitor the situation and we will take action on those caught flouting the rules,” said Sofi, dismissing any foul play in the incident.

Why don't you post some pics of corpses killed by grenades and say that they are to be banned?

In Philippines & Italy etc they use even GUNS to celebrate NY and annually people also got killed.

Alcohol had killed even more people than firecrackers during festive celebrations, so why don't ban that totally also?;)

Singapore is TOO PUSSY to want to stay safe. That is why things are going wrong here because we hit the unnatural extreme in many aspects.

Some losses have to be there and need to be there in order to keep the magical balance. For celebrations / competition / education / etc etc to be realistically functional and natural. Singapore exceeded the extremes of being artificial and fake as well as coward.

must balance!!!

must balance!!!

Right!

A NANNY State or Grandma State isn't balanced, it is quite lopsided.:D

When my mom 1st became a grandma, her grand children (babies) love to run climb up all these furnitures, and she had no energy to run after them to nanny them, nor the catch up and rescue them from heights. She panic and scream until she is at risk of heart attacks.:cool: This was daily routine.

I got enough seeing this, I told her hundreds of times that the children needs to learn from falls. I let the babies climb up window grills as they wanted, and let them fall back onto the sofa. And some of them will be scared and stop trying these stunts. Others became very skilful climbers, and never fall. Today they all grew up, may be some of them have 1 or 2 childhood scars, but so what? That is growing up! You can not afford to be a nanny for their whole life. There are lessons and tests in lives, not all can make it. It is only natural. World is a brutal place and Green House Singaporeans need to survive outside. So be realistic.;)

When I was about 9, my left thumb was also blasted up like fried onion by a big firecracker and I nearly forgot about that. :D:p

It was a big red firecracker I picked up from ground which I think was part of a 20 feet long CNY eve blasting chain. Some how it did not blasted because the fuse was a bit damp. I had a joss-stick in my right hand which me and my sister were burning smaller firecrackers. I found this big one, and tried to burn it.

Fortunately I was only holding it's tail end with my fingers on left hand, and for quite a long time, fuse failed to light up. After 30 secs or so, I began to talk to my sister telling her that I think this cracker may be useless because it got a little wet. Then I got my sight away from it, with joss stick still burning it's fuse, to speak to my sister, then BANG! It blasted my fingers like fried onion 像爆葱一样的爆开!

My fingers skin were gone and there was deep cut in my thumb. At that moment it wasn't even painful, it went numb actually. ;) But later it was regaining functions of nerve, and I had to scream. :p Took me weeks to heal, and today there is no scar at all.

But what the hack?! Injury and bleeding is part of growing up.;)

Uncle Yap, you didn't have proper firecracker training. I played firecracker when I was young too. The drill was to hang (chained sticks) or plant (single stick) the firecracker securely. Make sure everybody around was aware I was going to light it up before I or whoever appointed light it up. Everybody ready, then light it up. Cover ears and run or squat down. Where got people hold firecracker in hand when lighting it up? The smaller kids were given little mini firework sticks, looking like joss sticks but when lighted up, splintered like mini fireworks. That could and should be held in hand. In fact, we scolded and banned smaller kids who got scared after lighting it up and threw it away. That'd be fire hazard if it landed on paper or cloth or other easily ignitable. It should be held in hand and waved as mini firework until the sparkles die off. It's safe like joss stick. There's a handle part and a burning part.

Those days, my childhood days, firecracker of any kind was supposed to be illegal already. However, we had some neighborhood uncles who somehow still managed to smuggle in some. Very affordable to kids too, no custom excise duty no GST. These days, even smuggled firecracker is also extinct. If I happen to be in Malaysia or Thailand etc. during CNY, I'll sure look around and ask for doing the honor of lighting it up.

throw firecrackers

heheh...
can still recall the days when me was young, firecrackers already banned in Singapore but not in 州府, best childhood :):):)
firecracker is a must during CNY, would take a few red crackers from the long string of them, light them up and throw at unsuspecting neighbors passing by, wouldn't get any scolding at all.
try pulling the same stunt during non CNY period, you get greeted by expletives that can put Clinton666 to shame :p:p:p

Stupid Chinamen polluting themselves.

Fireworks Send Beijing Air Pollution Soaring
January 29, 2012

Beijing. Clouds of smoke from Lunar New Year fireworks sent air pollution in Beijing soaring under a new more sensitive measurement system, reports said on Sunday.

Readings of fine particulate matter called PM2.5 reached 1.593 milligrams per cubic meter on the Jan. 22 eve of the holiday, about 100 times worse than the amount considered good for 24-hour exposure, the city’s environmental bureau said.

The reading drew wide publicity in the local media on Sunday. The popular Beijing Youth Daily praised the city government for taking a more critical look at air pollution, while urging residents to consider the environmental effects of setting off fireworks.

By noon on Sunday, as people headed back to work after the weeklong holiday, the level stood at a relatively good 0.039.

Concern has grown over air pollution from automobiles and other sources, prompting the city this month to begin announcing measurements of PM2.5 — particles less than 2.5 micrometers in size. That’s about 1/30th the width of an average human hair.

Because of their small size, the particles can lodge deeply in the lungs and are believed to pose the greatest risk to health.

Beijing is frequently cloaked in yellow haze, with buildings a couple of blocks away barely visible.

On particularly bad days, schools cancel outdoor activities due to the risk of respiratory problems and hospitals report increased numbers of people — particularly the elderly — seeking help because they’re having trouble breathing. Long-term exposure can cause a range of illnesses, especially to the cardiovascular system.

The city previously only released readings of the coarser PM10 standard that often indicated pollution was “light,” leading to accusations it was hiding the true extent of the problem.

The US Embassy began independently monitoring PM2.5 from a device on its rooftop and releasing the results via Twitter. Some residents even tested the air in their neighborhoods and posted the results online.

Beijing is now releasing hourly readings of PM2.5 that are taken from a monitoring site about 7 kilometers west of central Tiananmen Square.

This is what I call CNY.

I remember those wonderful years when fire-crackers were part and parcel of Singaporeans celebrating Chinese New Year.

Those were the days when we, irregardless of race, language and religion would play with our Chinese bretherens with small and large red fire-crackers armed with lighted joss-sticks

from neighbouring Taoists temples. We had Indians, Malays and others among us that played with such crackers. It was real fun and shioooook too.

We all knew that it ushered in a New Lunar New Year. Hence all of us, irrgardless of our race, language, culture and religion took pride in playing with our Chinese friends.

It was a great moment just like chasing after kites with bamboo poles or watching Chinese wayangs on Lady Precious Stream and playing tikam-tikam and then sharing goreng-pisang,

kachang-puteh, teng-teng and ice-ball with one another.

True friendship and camaraderie among people of all background. Truly Singaporean. That was the way we were and we were happy to be such until our kampongs disappeared and

we were moved into flats.

In the mid 70's this sport (fire-crackers) was totally banned in Singapore. The reason was that it caused fires to kampongs. But our kampongs have all disappeared since and replaced

with high-rise concrete flats.

Many years later, an intelligent Malaysia banned fire-crackers, not for the Singapore reasons (fire, blah, blah, blah, etc) but because Singapore gave them a good reason to do so.

Every reader of these forum knows the true eason why Malaysia banned fire-crackers.

Our kampongs have gone from the days of Bukit Ho Swee, Lorong Tai Seng and Kallang Pudding fires...

Why are we so paranoid of firecrackers still?

Is it really a security threat?

Self Fear is the greatest threat????????????????????

Such Fear is shoved into our minds everyday.

Surprising countries like Indonesia (with 230 million Muslims) still allow fire-crackers during the Hari Tahun Baru Imlek (or Lunar New Year). If I am not mistaken, Lest it be forgotten,

Indonesia was the country that cut off all relations with China when the playboy Sukarno was made a house prisoner and Suharto came into power. Singapore was courting China's

Teng Siow Ping then

With the current SBY and the former Gus Dur, things have now been viewed differently. People of all races play with patasan (fire-crackers) in Indonesia during Hari Nyepi (Hindu New

Year), Hari Raya Id-al Adha and Eid Ul-Fitr and Christmas (Natal).

Government can let off fire-crackers but NOT our people. WHY???????????????????????????????

What has happened to UNIQUELY SINGAPORE?

If you manage to shaft a stick of firecracker up Clinton666 ass and light it up, you'll get more points than Alamaking. ;)

Fireworks Send Beijing Air Pollution Soaring

You are not talking about NDP fireworks?

Too many daily activitis from humans on this planet will pollute air among the entire evironment, while soil, water, and even space had been polluted and littered by human. Why aren't we banning everything? :D

We have too many tricks in old days, detonate crakers under a tin can, detonate under water, detonate inside rubbish bins.

Blast up the shit buckets of old toilets 轰马桶 :D

Blast rat holes;)

etc etc. I am not posting the most rediculous and dangerous tricks here. CENSORED. :D
