I find a common experience of sending an e-mail to a friend or to a business contact, and do not receive a reply. I know that they had received it, because they reply when a send a reminder or a follow up reminder. They do not reply because they do not know how to respond, or the request was not clear, or do not have the complete information. It is almost like talking to someone, who does not talk back - just kept silent. Is this the right way to respond? What is a better way?

I receive a lot of emails - advertisements, spams, requests for help. I always reply to all emails addressed to me, requesting for help or information. If I do not have the answer, I still give a reply. I do not just ignore it.

Somebody just sent an email to me, "Mr. Tan, is Medishield adequate for my father?". I gave a reply, "Read the FAQs in this webpage. http://tankinlian.com/Information.aspx?q=medishield. There are a lot of pages of information that this person can read. I do not just ignore the email.

Someone just called me on a phone. They have a car accident and the insurance company refused to help them because the other driver is a foreign construction worker. I replied, "please send details in an email to me".

I believe there is an option for the email system to send you a response when the recipient has read the email.

Same for SMS. It is called 2-way texting.

First of all, I believe that TKL is not electable and I detest people who led him to make a fool of himself. On the other hand, what he said about non-reply to email or text is a shrewd observation of our society today - a lack of common courtesy. It is not whining but a lamentation. The two sentiments are worlds apart.

You forgot one thing. Not everybody checks email everyday. Just like not everybody checks letterbox everyday. Nothing to do with courtesy, maybe sick maybe on holiday, maybe just don't like you and ignore. All these are rights. Only company boss can demand company employees to check and respond to company emails everyday.

We women are experts at that. Click and delete emails from people we don't like. A direct call with caller ID shown to be someone we don't like to talk with anymore, click off. Even withoout caller ID shown, click off at the first sound of the voice we don't like. The one with consideration for courtesy should be the one with commonsense. People can't be bothered with you anymore. Instead of, whinning why people don't respond.

You have a point there about machine and human.
But when people get like 500 emails a day, there is a need to prioritise things and there is only 24hrs a day.
I am just assuming that the sender just want to know if the message is read.

If the person feel so self-importance and need to give free advice to feed his big ego, and announce it on his FB, I got nothing to say. Because he probably expect a Thank You and probably a red packet.
