Cologne-Mainz match off after referee suicide attempt

19 November 2011

Cologne's home game against Mainz has been called off after referee Babak Rafati attempted suicide in his hotel room.

The 41-year-old was due to officiate the Bundesliga game on Saturday, but was found in the morning with his wrists slashed.

Fans and stadium staff were not informed of the news until late, with supporters entering the RheinEnergie Stadion as late as 45 minutes before kick-off.

Cologne's press spokesperson, Tobias Schmidt, confirmed that the game had been cancelled as a replacement referee could not be found in time.

"The referee didn't turn up. We were unable to find a replacement at such short notice. We can't make any further comment," Schmidt said.

This is not the first time German football has been in the news for tragedy off the pitch.

In November 2009, Hannover goalkeeper Robert Enke took his own life by stepping out in front of a moving train.

Rafati is an experienced official in the Bundesliga, taking charge of nearly 200 league games.

When u say $200 payout for $5 bet, that means odds were 40 right? Or were the odds 200 and paid $1000 for a $5 bet?
I think the odds for 4-0 were 40.

There was hope for Los Che once Emery brought on Pablo Hernandez after the second half. His two assists to Soldado had made it possible for 2-3 otherwise Real would probably have stop at two. 2-3 is @20.

I agree. Torres will want to score against his former team, just to prove a point. The problem with Torres this season isn't lack of ability but lack of motivation. 3 pts for the Blues tonight

It wasn't too long ago that i highlighted the form of their 19 year old keeper Stegen. IMO he is the next best shot stopper after Neuer. Except for yesterday's game, you'll hardly find high scores in Monchengladbach games.

Comfirm 3 points for the Blues.. AVB will not tolerate another defeat today.. Chelski players will be gunning all out for a win.. I can't see Lpool getting anything out of today's game.. The Blues will snuff out Suarez.. Suarez is the only real threat for Lpool.. Kuyt is a headless chicken. Carroll will be firing blanks.. Downing, Henderson and Charlie Adams are over rated.. Their defence will be shaky.. Carragher not as imperious as before.. Agger or Skertel will be bullied into submission by Drogba.. It will be a resounding win for Chelski.. I pick a 2 or 3 nil win scoreline for the Blues..
