COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio's pork farmers and processors are vowing to fight the state's decision to remove pork from prison menus in response to a lawsuit by Muslim inmates.

Dick Isler (IHS'-ler), executive director of the Ohio Pork Producers Council, says the news is especially disappointing because his group fought to have pork placed back on the menu in 2009.

The state eliminated pork even though the inmates' lawsuit involves the preparation of non-pork meats, such as beef, according to Islamic law.

JoEllen Smith, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction, said Wednesday that removing pork eliminates the possibility of pork coming into contact with other foods during preparation.

The Ohio Justice and Policy Center, which is suing on behalf of two inmates, says the decision won't stop the lawsuit.

If you look into halal food law, it's about meat, not only about pork. Some meat can become halal to eat by halal way of slaughtering, e.g. chicken, mutton and beef. Some meat cannot become halal, e.g. pork and duck. The best way to solve the prison situation is to serve all vegetarian dishes. All vegetables are halal. That's why you can see Muslims buying vegetables from Chinese vegetable stalls but never from Chinese meat stalls even if just for chicken.

Criminals and prisoners of all creeds don't deserve meat anyway. Vegetables are enough are basic humanitarian sustenance.

That is substantially correct. However...

1. Anything that lives and dies in water is halal.

2. Frog is haram.

3. Duck is haram? That is a new one to me! Especially considering that I have eaten duck at a halal restaurant before.
