Allan Wu and Wong Li Lin relocating to Shanghai

Johnny333, recently a group of Malaysian businessmen came visit me some has offices in Bangkok too. While we were eating one of them mentioned Thailand is much safer in terms of crimes compare to Malaysia and particularly Johore, the rest agreed and the whole night they were discussing of the latest crimes in Malaysia. They also mentioned a lot of violent crimes are done by Indonesians.

I'm not surprised about the high crime rate in JB. With so many JB residents going to Spore to work there is alot of $$ in JB that represent lucrative potential targets .

In Spore we can see an increase in the number of crimes committed by foreigners. When I walk around my neighborhood I often see those police billboards asking for witnesses to break-ins.

The Thai Consulate will not have a list of MOE approved schools. You can google for Thailand ED-VISA and there are just too many schools. Can also PM me if you are keen to stay in Pattaya.

.

How much do the schools charge for Thai language courses & when does a new term begin:confused:

At most private language school, you can start anytime for the language course. As long as you are taking a 180 hour course per year, you are eligible for a 1 year ED-VISA. Most school offer group lessons of 3-8 students per group. Group lessons for 180 hours is around THB 20,000 - THB 25,000 in Pattaya. Which means it is about THB 120/hour. Private 1 to 1 lessons are more expensive but you will learn faster.

Recommended you learn to read Thai also if you intend to stay in LOS. It's very helpful and it's not too difficult once you get used to it. The plus point is learning Thai in LOS expose you to Thai language all the time and the locals cannot bullshit you if you can speak and read their language.

hi chon can you read and speak thai?

I have a handy dictionary in my iphone for it and a few translators.

One thing though i have been trying to find the english translation for the thai cuss word kwan tin.

I know tin means foot in thai but is kwan?

Yes, I can read Thai.

Kuan Tin is actually not curse word, more of a slang or informal word.

Kuan Means Disturb, most people are familiar with Rop Guan which means disturb). Tin means foot. Put them together, it means "disturb foot".

It means to looking for/stirring trouble. The SG Hokkien (Chei Dai Zi) or Cantonese (Wan Ye), literally, mean Look for trouble.
For example, Ya Ma Guan Tin Tee Nee (Don't come "find trouble" here).

Another slang regarding foot/toe is "Yip Tao". Yip means step, Tao mean toes. Yip Tao means step on toes. It means stepping on someone's toes. (Offending someone). You can pick up a lot of these slangs just by watching Thai drama.

one more chon what about lop jik? Does it mean crazy person?

What's the most vulgar thai swear word?

I know that meng is you in thai which is insulting and can result in a fight.

Hehe, not too sure about Lop Jik.
Mueng is like "Xiao Eh" in Hokkien, only use with familiar/close people. The other one Gu means I, Hokkien equivalent to "Lim Beh/ Your father". So now, you know why cannot use Gu and Mueng anyhow. Yes, can can into trouble. Other alternatives are Lu (You) and Wa (I) as in Teochew but try not to use any of these. Safer to go with Pom for man and Chan for woman. And Khun for you.

Many many vulgar words but try not to use them, especially foreigners.

OK, just checked with my staff. It's actually Rok Jit (Rok means disease). It means Physco/Pervert (Bian Tai).

I swear by 3BB after trying True and TOT. TOT is damn unreliable.

Now using 12M download / 1M upload. Cost around 1200THB. Been with 3BB for 3 years its very good.

Hi Spiky,

Broadband performance in Pattaya is not too fantastic. Previously used TOT (2MB/512K) plan at THB 800/mth but now using 3BB (6Mb/512K) plan at THB 600 per month. It's good enough for me to do most of the work, online quotes, online sports odds, surf the net, watch ppstv and youtube. Can be slow at times, intermittent connections or even no connection during heavy rains. Other times, it is reasonably fast. I remembered there was a promotion recently by 3BB for 9MB/10MB broadband at about THB 1,000. 3BB is quite aggressive and their pretties (show promoters) are really pretty and so their service are likely to be over subscribed.

Any bros in TH have any input on the broadband service in TH outside Pattaya?

3G is only limited to certain parts of Thailand, mainly in BKK.

Yes its Rhok Jit. You cannot really get into a fight with this word although its insulting but then most of the time its used among friends or people you know so you will not get into fights la. Its normally used as like pervert or even a phycho. Even simple mental illness for example when I always need to pull a padlock 10 times even I know its locked rhokjit can be use in this case too. Use mostly as a joke la.

Curious as to how many hours of Thai language courses you've had so far?

In your experience how many hours of instruction before you have functional reading ability? One of the obstacles I see in living in LOS is not being able to read the road signs:) Would be nice to have a car to explore LOS;)

Get a Thai girlfriend. I am serious.

For myself, I think lost count of hours as I started learning Thai since young from Thai relatives.

Only started formal lessons on reading about 4-5 years ago. There are 44 consonants, 20 something vowels plus some tonal marks to remember. Once you learn how to 'assemble' the consonants, vowels and marks, you can read and pronounce Thai. Typically, take about 20 hours over 2-3 weeks to learn all Thai characters. You can read restaurant Menu, road signs, advertisement, sing Karaoke and read simple product instructions at the supermarket. To achieve the local Thai standard, you will need at least 4-5 years constant practice. Remember, the Thai study Thai language for about 10 -12 years and even the Universities courses are conducted in Thai.

Of course, the more you practise, the better you become. At least, you can search the Thai dictionary if you don't understand the word. If you are driving in big cities, expressway, usually, there are English road signs. I still use Thai dictionary all the time.

Hahaha, Thai GF = Longhair dictionary (not Longman Dictionary).

Agree and both disagree, depending on the qualifications of the longhair dictionary. If graduate level, think can learn better. If Longhair dictionary education level not high or from countryside, can be quite disastrous. Will unknowingly ended up learning the vulgarities, impolite and countryside language and very difficult to kick the habit. BKK is quite 'hi so' and so BKK people look down on these countryside folks a lot. I have no problem with people speaking country slang or accent but not recommended for foreigners to do the same. Trust me, they might not say anything on the front, but inside, they really look down.

So to earn some respect, make sure the Thai GF can teach proper Thai Language. Also, your Thai will improve tremendously when you quarrel with Thai GF. Trust me, you need a lot of vocabulary to be in a quarrel.

My advice, find opportunities elsewhere. Do not be afraid. Fear is the factor that makes people suffer even more. I overcame my fear and now I am doing very well as a second class in my host country. For SG people, if you think hard enough, this small island will eventually be eaten up by your neighbours and think of your children. If you love them, move out now! And let the FT kill themselves in this hopeless island.

ChonburiFC

Great advice.... ! Even my Malaysian frens get a Sinkie.citizen.

I told him Fuck hell you will regret !

Will your sex life degrade tremendously too? :o

nope, quite the opposite. Normally, after a good quarrel, will always most likely to be followed with a "fxxx like no tomorrow" session :-)

Wah lan eh sipei cheem sipei geng! I got lot more to learn before getting my runroad licence LOL

Get a Thai girlfriend. I am serious.

I also heard that there is a class difference in how Thai's speak:)

I guess it's something like queens english & the singalese version:o
If I'm going to pay $$, might as well do it right & learn proper thai, as I've heard that face is important in LOS & don't want to go around offending locals by saying the wrong things:D
