SM Goh: Govt will invest heavily in ITE and produce mortgage slaves

SM Goh: ITE must stay relevant

SINGAPORE'S technical educational institutions must continue to stay relevant and responsive in an increasingly competitive global environment, said Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong yesterday.

He said: "The Government will continue to invest in this sector and in our students to help meet this objective."

Plans have also been announced to expand the polytechnics' capacity, to allow more Institute of Technical Education (ITE) graduates to upgrade themselves and receive a polytechnic education, he added.

Mr Goh was speaking at the Worldskills Singapore competition, a nationwide competition for Singaporean youth who excel in technical skills.

It was held at ITE College West in Choa Chu Kang. The competition began yesterday and ends tomorrow.

In his speech, Mr Goh said that ITE's success should not be taken for granted, and that his faith in the institution has been reaffirmed.

Skilled workers, such as mechanics, plumbers, cooks and hairdressers, are essential to Singapore's economy and demand for them will always be there, he said.

Mr Goh cited the example of the 2009 recession, during which more than 80 per cent of ITE graduates who entered the job market found a job within six months of graduation.

Since its inception in 1992, ITE has produced some 300,000 graduates.

He also drew on similar examples, reported in The New York Times, that the demand for skilled labour - such as welders and electrical linemen - remained high during the recession in the United States.

Britain and Australia also face an acute shortage of skilled labour. Mr Goh explained that there is a heavy emphasis on knowledge generation, usually by highly educated graduates, in a knowledge-based economy.

He said: "However, knowledge flies across national borders and, in the Internet age, knowledge-based jobs can be outsourced."

Many countries now outsource even professional work, like legal and accounting services, to emerging countries such as India and China, he said.

Skilled technical jobs, however, cannot be outsourced, Mr Goh stressed.

He said: "When a car breaks down, you need a local mechanic to fix it. When you want to cut or colour your hair, you need a local hairdresser.

"As our population ages, we will need more caregivers and nurses to take care of our parents and grandparents."

They would be better off going to Australia & learning a trade. Blue collar workers there can make more than a degree holder

yes, i agree. The sinkie govt do everything to cover their incompetency and in the end the sinkies themselves got screwed.

That is the worst kind of life a sinkie can have. GOod luck man. I am glad that i am away from all these shame and disgust.

wait long long ah... there are better china and india blue collars laborers there

I think Australians have a better impression of Sporeans than PRC Chinese\Indians. Just look at the resentment they cause in Spore because they can't blend in

There's already a sizeable Sporeans community in Australia & their success has laid the groundwork for future Sporeans

We shouldn't underestimate the advantages of being a Sporeans, educated, ability to speak english, law abiding,....:)

There's already alot of Sporean ex-civil servants in Australia so I don't see why blue collar Sporeans can't succeed there. :)

Knowing how ambitious Sporeans can be, I suspect some may become as successful as Sammy boy:D

To invest in these bunch of losers who will(not choice) do jobs that normal Sinkies won't... N keep the wages low...

Talk cock king PEANUTS GOH has said something truly quite sensible.

ITE is indeed a secret weapon that few in the wolrd know about,if PAP can manage it well, our productivity would go UP,instead of just the lowest in the whole developed world.

But I urge talk cock king peanuts GOH to really look into this and make sure it is not a waste of time & money just like many other projects that PAP did undertake.

I look at it more of a political than educational statement-as elections coming.

After the last elections, the old man said 70% of a particular segment voted for his party(how does he know?).

if you lok at ITE, most of the students comes from the same segment.

While they are lulled into complacency, their place is being gradually eroded by immigrants from a nearby country. These same immigrants are also producing lots of kids that are now in PAP kindergardens .

Problem is these immigrants are not only as relaxed( if not more) but are also well known for their fake qualifications ,unreliability ,financially irresponsibility and voilence.

Re: SM Goh: Govt will invest heavily in ITE and produce mortgage slaves

Gov don't want Singaporeans to get too smart. If too many gets into the University, they will have a choice to stay or to emigrate to another country. Then gov will have problems getting slaves to tax. Cos FTs will take the money and run back to their countries with their CPF. So it's better to "lock" as many Singaporeans (and their CPF) as possible.

That's very true. A plumber can charge like a doctor. Skilled chaps are much better off than a general degree or honors degree holder. Blue collar workers are not 'inferior' over there too, unlike over here.

They should glamourise the postion of GRO of the night club girls. KTV hostess .....cos we are turning into service based economy. Someone has to service all these rich blokes.

They should open up classes like pole dancing, make up lesson , personal grooming, vocal training and different kind of international dance class mah. Let the singkie girls learn mah. Groom them to become 交际花。Our girls are not only sex machine, but they can be brought out for big international events. They are very well groom, educated and of better quality from our South East Asian peers and even beat the CHINA PRC pro hands down !

I should call it DIPOLMA in PERSONAL GROOMING.
