Mr Lim Zirui’s Nightmare Scenario (8 Nov 2010)
November 11th, 2010 | Author: Contributions
On October 2010, SM (Senior Minister) Goh Chok Tong attended a student forum session at the Nanyang Technological University. At the session, a 23 year old aerospace engineering student Mr Lim Zirui spoke about the impact of massive immigration on job pressures and National Service (NS) obligations.
Mr Lim had good reason to worry about if he still had any future in Singapore. Here is a nightmare scenario which Mr Lim may face over the next 10 years after graduation
Mr Lim’s initial job search is likely to be in his field of study. 20 years of promoting foreigners by the ruling PAP (People’s Action Party) regime at middle and higher levels have turned the workplace into a mini-United Nations. This exists in both foreign multinational corporations and government-linked corporations.
The organization is likely to prefer to hire and promote young engineers from China and India. If he is unable to find an engineering job, he may reduce his expectations and accept a lower technical position in the sector.
However, the technical level is probably dominated by Filipinos. Mr Lim may be considered overqualified due to his academic background. Doubts will be raised on his commitment to the job.
He may look for something else distantly related. He may think of applying for an office-based aerospace logistics position. However, the massive immigration has turned the office environment into a woman’s world. This includes accounting, finance, banking, customer service, operations management and human resources.
For the logistics position, he may be interviewed by a 33 year old female manager who will be assessing him based on his perceived ability to work in an all-female team. Mr Lim will have to possess the charisma of James Bond in order to secure the position
The problems faced by Mr Lim are not just about looking for the first job. He may end up working for a series of term jobs with depressed wages. He may be unemployed for at least 3 months for every 3 years of unemployment. While he is struggling, the pro-PAP media will present success stories of young engineering immigrants.
In these stories, these foreigners who have studied in the same course as Mr Lim have obtained good jobs with good salaries. They will be active in pro-PAP grassroots organizations and perhaps groomed for high positions or future political office.
After 10 years, Mr Lim will be 35 years old, with little money and zero career advancement. He will be deemed overaged for many positions. He realizes his only way out is self-employment. He may try being an insurance/property agent or taxi driver. Alternatively he may set up a business of his own. By the time he is aged 40 or above, he may become a successful entrepreneur or a hopeless bankrupt.
Let us now consider the NS issue with the assumption Mr Lim gets a decent job. He will have to go for in camp training. Depending on his rank, he will have to motivate subordinates to take training seriously even when he is worrying about office occurrences. He will be wondering whether the military rank is a source of pride or a demoralizing burden.
To maintain fitness while working long hours, Mr Lim may have to do his own training after 2000h or 2100h on weekdays. However, this may be ineffective due to work fatigue. He will have to go for remedial training (RT) on 2 weekdays if he fails his physical fitness test. He may have to leave the office as early as 1630 hours due to the transportation time.
Before he leaves the office, he is likely to the subject of ridicule of young unmarried Malaysian office ladies who mock at him for not being able to maintain his fitness and implying he has lost his manhood. They may openly declare Singaporean men as being weak and useless. They will emphasize they are in Singapore to look for rich Caucasians as future husbands.
RT will also cause serious disruption to his work. To make up for this loss, he may work extra hours on other days. Going for RT sessions to improve his fitness is not enough and he still has to do his own training. Faced with various constraints, he may decide to become a RT regular every year and allow his fitness level to decline.
This may seem very frustrating for Mr Lim. However, this nightmare scenario is not inevitable. Mr Lim’s immediate priority is to persuade as many people around him to vote against the PAP in the coming election.
A massive backlash such as the PAP losing its 2/3 parliamentary majority is needed if the ultra-liberal immigration policy is to be put to a temporary halt and reviewed. It is essential to vote out openly pro-foreigner first level ministers such as SM Goh, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Foreign Minister George Yeo.
If the current political status quo remains, Mr Lim may have to consider long-term emigration. This may be sad but probably true.
