Thousands of condoms clog Games village drains

NEW DELHI, Oct 7 (Reuters) - Thousands of flushed condoms threaten to choke the Commonwealth Games village's drainage system, media reports said, in the latest problem to hit the venue from hidden snakes to outbreaks of dengue.

Games organisers, who won a race against time to ready the village, are now battling to clear clogged drains after thousands of non-biodegradeable contraceptives were flushed down toilets in the first week of the event.

"If that is happening, it shows that there is use of condoms and I think that is a very positive story. Athletes are being responsible," Commonwealth Games Federation President Mike Fennell told a news conference on Thursday.

"We all know that encouraging safe sex is a very important thing to do."

Games organisers had provided 8,000 free condoms in the village, and the provision appears to be in high demand. One official told the Mail Today newspaper on Thursday that over 4,000 had already been snapped up by eager athletes.

Shoddy construction work, fears over an outbreak of dengue fever and worries about security had meant many teams delayed their move into the village before the Games began. However, blame for the latest problem lies firmly with the athletes.

Following a decision to provide free condoms at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, it has become something of a tradition.

At the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000, athletes quickly used up the 70,000 free condoms provided, forcing organisers to supply another 20,000, while at the 2004 Games in Athens, the provision was doubled to 130,000.

At both the Beijing Games in 2008, and the Vancouver Winter Olympics in February, 100,000 condoms were provided for athletes.

I'm surprised till now no one has come up with biodegradable french caps?

Shame on you polymer scientists amd engineers!

biodegradeable material for it sure have, sometime its the cost that why company don't pursue it.

either the athletes r banging their hearts out with fellow team mates, or they bang other athletes from other nations.

Questions:

1. Why must athletes have sex during games period? It's just under 2 weeks.

2. Why do they throw condoms into drains? Aren't there proper disposal bins?

I don't think u understand. Every major sporting events including the Olympics games is a fuckfest. Imagine thousands of young, fit, attractive people living inclose quarters to each other. They will only see each other for a few weeks, and its a great time to have NSA sex. Even the most recent Winter Olympics, the orgainzers made sure there was a steady supply of condoms in the housing units. Most of the competitors are remote shots at a medal. The serious contenders will restrain themselves from any distractions like sex. For the rest, after they are eliminated in the heats, all they do is hang around support their remaining teammates and wait for the closing ceremonies. For them, every night is a party and fuckfest in the village.

They are not throwing condoms inthe drains. they are flushing them down the toilet, but in india, the toilets lead into the drains. Not a sewage plant.

Possible answers:

1. Doesn't it make the athletes more determined to win and more ferocious if they abstain from sex? In that case, they shouldn't have sex.

2. Perhaps they were having sex beside the drains. :)

woahah. classic.

maybe they under spec the drainage pipes?

Green Label products not aimed at cost conscious, aimed at environmentally responsible and those who want to make a green statement, like Toyota Prius. Maybe current green french cap not made thin enough for enhanced sensations; just my guess.

Anyone knows whether these condoms embossed with Games' logo? Could be collector's item y'know?

Cheers!

1. Not just the athletes, I'm sure the coaches and judges too. :D

2. Dedicated disposal bins for prophylactics have not been mandated (or proposed) yet. Parliament is too prudish to discuss this.

Cheers!
