Actually R.O.C. (Taiwan) should and could have been independent long ago.

R.O.C (Taiwan) was already in UN before China. But then PRC came into the UN, PRC wants R.O.C (Taiwan) to be removed from UN. A proposition was for R.O.C to be renamed Taiwan instead. However if my memories did not fail me, either Chiang KS or Chiang JG rejected it therefore losing their seat in UN permanently.

Yup.You are correct.What Chiang did was correct.If he accepted it, meaning R.O.C the Real Republic Of China will accepted the fact that R.O.C had lost the war to Communist China.Because Chiang rejected it, R.O.C will have an excuse that Communist China drived them out from the mainland and R.O.C can if possible fight back to mainland and drive out the Communist from the mainland and rule China legally unlike Communist China ruling China not with legal mean but with force!!!

Chiang knew he cannot do that. Taiwan is not China ; it does not have great rivers and mountains, 5,000 years of history and culture. Taiwan does not even belong to China before the arrival of Chinese immigrants from Fukien. And to gain independance by dropping the name ROC is not acceptable to Chiang and the KMT.
