There are many talented footballers overlooked by their country of birth who represent the nation of 1 parent or grandparents. Jens Castrop was born in Germany, to a German father and a South Korean mother. He played for Germany from Under-16 all the way through to the Under-21 national team. He eventually chose to represent South Korea at the 2026 World Cup owing to limited opportunities with Germany at senior level.

In other countries, the foreign born player may represent their national team without first gaining citizenship. Under FIFA rules, he either has to have a parent or grandparent who was from that country, or has played at least 5 years in that nation's domestic league.
