I agree 100%. Allowing dual citizenship or naturalising foreign players with a S'porean parent or grandparent - which FIFA permits - would allow more pro footballers to represent S'pore. Perry Ng who plays for Cardiff City in the UK is already 30 years old, but is still awaiting his pink IC to join the Lions. His best years as a player are limited owing to red tape.
The England women's national football team already "brought football home" by being back-to-back European champions. They won the Women's Euro in 2022 and in 2025. The men are only making empty promises every time a major tournament comes round.
There are many talented footballers overlooked by their country of birth who represent the nation of 1 parent or grandparents. Jens Castrop was born in Germany, to a German father and a South Korean mother. He played for Germany from Under-16 all the way through to the Under-21 national team. He eventually chose to represent South Korea at the 2026 World Cup owing to limited opportunities with Germany at senior level.Even if dual citizenship, only a fool would choose to play for Sinkieland. Outside of the World Cup pipe dream, what else is there to look forward to in international football? AFC Asian Cup? SEA Games?
The FAS is sleeping on the job. That is why the likes of Perry Ng (Cardiff), Luke O'Nien (Sunderland), Harry Birtwistle (Wolves) and Sonny Aljofree (Man U) are all eligible to represent S'pore through their S'porean parents or grandparents, are not wearing the Lions jersey. They are not good enough to represent England, but would strengthen our national football squad for sure.
