Mobile Food Sellers of Yesteryear

Just to ask those who know, now the Bras Basah area stretching from Cathay to opposite carlton hotel, all occupied by SMU Buildings.

Look so unfriendly with barriers that admit only those with student pass i suppose.

Anyone know where are the Campus Canteens ? Are the food good? Can public patronize ?

I don't think there're canteens in the Arts Canteen, Science Canteen of NUS sense. But there's a Kopitiam Underground, and there are eateries at street level throughout the stretch.

You are right that the buildings do not interact well with the street. It is as such not really a city university like NYU.

Well that guy who owned the SJI bus pass might remember being told that behind the walls on the right of the picture was temptation to SIN.

It is human nature that forbidden fruit(s) taste the sweetest:D

Thks, I know there are eateries ... info on some of the directional panels, question is: accessible to public like airport canteens open to public but pay slightly higher ?

I have never been inside their canteens, but going by what a city university is in countries like Canada, you shld not have trouble to eat there as a member of the public. City U's cna usually expect public walkins - add to their businesses, and they'll be fools if you can't. Maybe the mode of payment will be different, you in cash cf. with students in their cards.

I've been to quite a few places there and Im not linked to SMU. I think they're all open to the public. I don't think the rather small student and staff population can otherwise support it. I also don't know if students and staff get a better rate.

The first road pricing scheme, known as the Area Licensing Scheme (ALS), was introduced in the Restricted Zone (RZ) in 1975. The scheme was subsequently extended to major expressways with the Road Pricing Scheme (RPS).
In September 1998, the ERP system replaced the manual system for the RZ and expressways. In September 1999, ERP was extended to some of our key arterial roads beyond the RZ.

Curious as to what you did if you couldn't sell those tickets? :)

Those days got midnight shows, hawker stalls opened until the wee hours, shops that were opened until late at night. The night was alive

Nowadays everyone must rush to catch the last bus :D

Those day tickets sure sold out when it is Saturday midnight show.

After show, go carpark or Bugis street eat Tu Hong kiam Chye or Fish head bee Hoon.

End up the night either in Skillet or Tivoli and last Hotel New HK.:):):)

That was back when the CBD scheme was REALLY intended to control traffic.

Remember the car parks they built around the fringes to encourage the concept of parking & riding the buses into the CBD. It wasn't popular because the buses weren't convenient.
.
The gov't is now only focused on profits. They have been corrupted by all the $$$ :(

I find it ironic that they re-located all the schools in the area & then decide to build a university in the same area

What an incredible thread, it gives me a real thrill reading about stuffs during my younger years, and then some even older ones! I guess our government really screw us over in the name of progress huh?

So many old trades mentioned, not sure I can add something new or not as I skipped some pages.

Here's something that I like to do coming back from school once or twice a week; a guy riding a tri-shaw stall will come into the estate and sound his horn, and everyone come out to buy..... CHAR SIEW from him. It was a real treat to buy 50cent to 1dollar of char siew and eat it on the spot. Better then ice-cream :D

Char Siew back then was so good, unlike the many fake char siew that was prepared by boiling the meat then dying them red.

I don't remember the guy selling char siew, maybe he just did not come to my estate. If you are that age group, than u must have gone to an open air chinese wayang shows. In those days, travelling wayang shows would go from village to village. I lived near loyang at that time, and at night, all the hawkers woudl show up there. The hawkers were truly mobile. And teh food was fantastic. In particular, the chinese rojack with the bar be que taupok stuffed with towkay and shredded cucumber with the dipping sauce. And the grilled cuttlefish. Yum yum. ANd the chinese desert was great too..
