The Emerald Hill area, in the 80s near the bus-stop, people remember a hip apparel shop called "RAMPAGE" ? Fashionable clothes, baggy jeans era :D

What an incredible thread, it gives me a real thrill reading about stuffs during my younger years, and then some even older ones! I guess our government really screw us over in the name of progress huh?

So many old trades mentioned, not sure I can add something new or not as I skipped some pages.

Here's something that I like to do coming back from school once or twice a week; a guy riding a tri-shaw stall will come into the estate and sound his horn, and everyone come out to buy..... CHAR SIEW from him. It was a real treat to buy 50cent to 1dollar of char siew and eat it on the spot. Better then ice-cream :D

Char Siew back then was so good, unlike the many fake char siew that was prepared by boiling the meat then dying them red.

Back then, there were no fear of eating pork with swine fever..only I remember there was a widespread rumour once that eating pork will causes your testicles to shrink...what was that call???

Actually most people were carefree, we seldom bother what we eat is healthy or not...just eat & worry in the future...

The motto was "live to eat, eat to live"...who cares if the Char Siew roasted with egdes black & dye with red food colour was healthy or not..as long as it tastes good...

and no stuffy food regulations....:D

The word was "koro". Why, dont ask me.

Yeah, never heard of people dying too from food poisoning, like the In dian Rojak case. i recall a few deaths from hepatitis from eating tainted cockles.

Ship Restaurant here already? those days silver spoon , hans (western food coffee house) run by hainanese.

To the right or back entrance of Lido, was a cafe, that sells very good western food & pizza...

:D

Lot of good coffee houses and restaurants, Roma, Copper Kettle, Tivoli,Cozy corner, Swan, Boat house, Ban Chuan, Bamboo steak House, Gold Leaf, La Piazza Pizza, just a few that came to mind.

The success of this thread obviously means that this forum is infested with old farts.

I remember a road between Lido Theatre & Shaw House that went to the back of Lido Theatre(actually to the front) were you got the cheaper front tickets. In those days there were 3 types of tickets. Most expensive were the circle(upstairs), standard(ground floor at the back) & cheap front seats.

There was a cafe next to the front entrance called Mayfair. Believe me it sold very, very good hot dogs. I've never tasted anything better. You would always see crowds buying these hotdogs & they were not cheap. I heard that the owner managed to buy several private properties from selling the hot dogs

After reading about how the owner of Troika retired to Australia got me thinking of how good Spore was in the old days. Small businesses could thrive & make enough to buy properties. Even the hawkers did well.

Sad that nowadays you see alot of hawkers & cafes struggling to pay their rent. Many have to compromise on portions & quality of their food. The end of the so called food paradise :(

Saturday midnight show or good Chinese kung fu Movies , always make us extra cash, selling tickets double the price.....song song y y.

Ban Chuan....next to the Thai Embassy along a row of old shophouses where what is the name of the building is..french name..

Those days it was hip to bring your new found girlfriend to coffee house, the better ones in Orchard Rd the better. The prettier ones, the one that is hard to get, gets the better coffee house. Remember those days, ATM machines were not in use yet & some banks have them & they were all in Raffles Place. One have to withdraw enough cash to impress the girl, and times, darn she ordered something expensive on the menu & one have to make excuse to the toliet to count the cash in the wallet, or call your brother using the house phone for help of say $50...have to dilly dally make small talk waits for help, order another drink...and then bro' turns up..."fancy meeting you here, shake your hand with the $50 and then say..bye!!

ha ha ha ha :D

There was a coffee house in Toa Payoh Central I used to patronize and forgotten the name, now it is QM Dental...can any one remember?

This was the cheaper coffee house for 'cheaper newfound girfriend'...:D
