The only time I remember TCB speaking strongly against the party line was regarding the issue on non elected MPs.

Let me give you a background of this man. He used to run a clinic in the middle of Ama Keng farm land during the 70s and 80s. He was the village doctor. He was considered next to god by the people there. He treated not only the residents there but those who went into the jungle of Malaysia and fought alongside the communist. He was a committed socialist. He was also active during student union days.
He used to thrash the govt officials when the farmers had no voice. He was persuaded by GCT to become and MP.
Its common knowledge that any major policy change or introduction of new ones were formulated with Tan Cheng Bock in mind. They knew he would stand up. The press always played down his comments and speeches in Parliament.
Not many people are aware that he used to score the highest margins in elections but the PAP failed to convince him to anchor a GRC or use his constituency as an anchor because he believed that every MP might fight his own fight and get the seat correctly.
Its also well known that he does not regard the old man in any light and speaks as though the guy does not exist.

Sorry, I just saw your latest post. Has he raised any strong points which benefit the ordinary person and is against the ruling party and the ministers. This SIA case merely shows that he does not put oldman on a pedestal.

I can assure you that Cheng Bock was an exception. There are just too many and they are not in the public place and it covered small business to the ordinary man. Not many people are aware that he led the first revolt of the Singapore Medical Council in the 1970s.
It was him that gave courage to Tan Soo Khoon and Wan Soon Bee and they became the feared 3 much more than the opposition in Parliament.
Even CPF Board could not believe the govt agreed to allowing CPF funds for education.
