No FIFA action over Henry handball

FIFA has announced that no action will be taken against Thierry Henry over the handball that helped secure victory for France in the World Cup qualification play-off against Republic of Ireland.

It had been believed that Henry could be suspended, fined or given a warning for the offence, which prompted calls from the Football Association of Ireland to replay the match as France edged through into the World Cup finals by a solitary goal after extra time in the two-legged tie.

However, FIFA has said that there is no legal basis by which they could punish the player for his actions and, as such, he will be free to participate in France's opening match against Uruguay on June 11.

A FIFA statement read: "On 2 December 2009, the FIFA Executive Committee asked the FIFA Disciplinary Committee to analyse the handling offence committed by Thierry Henry during the France v. Republic of Ireland match on 18 November 2009, and to consider the possible disciplinary consequences.

"At its meeting on 18 January 2010, the Disciplinary Committee reached the conclusion that there was no legal foundation for the committee to consider the case because handling the ball cannot be regarded as a serious infringement as stipulated in article 77a) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. There is no other legal text that would allow the committee to impose sanctions for any incidents missed by match officials."

Finally, common sense prevail. Whatever the F were they thinking to even start this stupid investigation!!!! Yes France didn't deserve to make the cut, Yes it was unfair of France to win thanks to a handball and Yes Ireland deserves better. But a hand ball in any game, whether big or small should be treated equally.

A handball offense in a normal game would at the very worse get a player yellow carded. There is no excuse whatsoever to even consider punishment more serious then that just because it was a high profile game.

More importantly, they were judging the incident based on video evidence. It was FIFA themselves who disallow the use of video replays to help referee a game. Had FIFA allowed the use of video in the first place, the goal would never have been allowed. The fault lies with FIFA itself, do not blame Henry. He just happened to be reacting according to instincts. If Henry was to be punished due to this incident, then they should be consistent, every freaking handball incident should be treated the same :oIo::oIo::oIo:

Apparently, FIFA believes in human refereeing, not machine refereeing. Human refereeing comes everything human, including miistakes, misses and other human weaknesses. Such is part of the game as it has always been.
