That's actually not true, even from the viewpoint of islamic scholars and politicians.

To most people, 'practice their religion in peace' refers to personal, private, individual behaviour that doesn't affect other people in public or private space. Even as minorities, moslems are notorious for wanting to police the private behaviour of other moslems and demanding that the majority bend backwards to accommodate moslem practices in public.
