A 24-year-old woman was stabbed to death at Kokkarne, near Brahmavar in Udupi district on Friday.
The victim, identified as Rakshitha, 24, is a resident of Chegribettu at Kokkarne. She worked on a contract basis in the Survey Department, the police said.
Meanwhile, Karthik, who was suspected of having stabbed her, was found dead in a well in Kokkarne late in the evening.
On the day of the incident, the victim was walking towards a bus stop at Puttanakatte in Kokkarne around 8.30 a.m. when a person on a two-wheeler blocked her way and stabbed her in the neck and chest before fleeing from the spot. September 12 was her birthday, the police said. The passers-by rushed the victim to KMC hospital in Manipal, where she succumbed to the injuries on Friday evening.
Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said the suspect, identified as Karthik, 27, was in love with the victim and wanted to marry her, but faced objections from her family. Following this, she had blocked his contact, the police said.
The police suspect the stabbing was following the refusal to the marriage proposal.
