KUALA LUMPUR: Signs of disunity rose to the surface in Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) on Saturday (Feb 29), amid an ongoing power tussle in Putrajaya.
This came as Dr Mahathir Mohamad reunited with his Pakatan Harapan (PH) allies in the former ruling coalition and declared that he had the numbers to become prime minister again, less than a week after he resigned from the country's top post.
Bersatu announced on Friday that it had chosen party president Muhyiddin Yassin as its prime minister candidate.
On Saturday, Mr Muhyiddin declared himself as Bersatu's chairman, ignoring a party statement that Dr Mahathir’s resignation as chairman on Monday had been retracted.
“Article 16.9 of the party’s constitution states that if the chairman resigns or is terminated, the party president has to assume the post until a new chairman is selected," said Mr Muhyiddin.
“Since Bersatu has not elected a new chairman, I, as the president, will assume the role of the chairman until an election is held,” he said.
Shortly after Mr Muhyiddin's announcement, Bersatu secretary-general Marzuki Yahya issued a statement stating that the only individual with the absolute power to lead the party was its chairman, Dr Mahathir.
“Therefore, all party’s actions and directions are subject to the decisions made by YAB Tun (Dr Mahathir) as Bersatu chairman,” he said.

Bersatu Youth vice-chief Aizad Roslan also rejected the party’s decision to name Mr Muhyiddin as prime minister candidate.
He said in a statement on Saturday the youth wing will continue to support the party’s supreme council’s decision to back Dr Mahathir as prime minister.
Similarly, youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman said he would not work with the corrupt and form a government with them.
ANWAR OPTED OUT OF CABINET: PKR MP
Mr Muhyiddin had on Monday pulled Bersatu out of PH and partnered with Barisan Nasional, Parti Islam Se-Malaysia and others in a bid to form a new government.
With these parties backing him, Mr Muhyiddin emerged as the frontrunner in the race for the coveted prime minister post.
PH’s original choice for PM candidate was Mr Anwar Ibrahim, after Dr Mahathir put forth a proposal to form a unity government that cuts across party lines.
However, on Saturday morning, PH backtracked to say it would now support Dr Mahathir as prime minister again, having successfully lobbied the 94-year-old to restore the PH government.
In an apparent endorsement of this latest decision, Mr Anwar tweeted: “It’s time to do the right thing for the rakyat (people) and our beloved nation."

POLITICAL LEADERS MET MALAYSIAN KING
Meanwhile, there was a flurry of activity at Istana Negara on Saturday, as leaders of political parties arrived to seek an audience with Malaysian King Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, who had asked them to present their prime minister candidates.
First to arrive were Mr Muhyiddin, Parti Islam Se-Malaysia president Abdul Hadi Awang and UMNO president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, according to Malaysian media.
The second group to see the king was PH leaders from Democratic Action Party and Parti Amanah Negara.

Mr Anwar showed up at about 1.30pm.
He told Malaysian media earlier that he was going to tell Malaysia's monarch that Dr Mahathir was now the prime ministerial candidate of the PH.
He thanked coalition members for agreeing with his decision "to take a step back and to put forward Mahathir as our candidate for prime minister, in order to avoid a political crisis and being thrown into the old system that we rejected", according to Reuters.

KUALA LUMPUR: In an unexpected turn of events, Pakatan Harapan (PH) on Saturday (Feb 29) declared its support for Dr Mahathir Mohamad to be the next Malaysian prime minister.
Dr Mahathir also issued a statement simultaneously declaring that he commands the majority of the parliament.
These came just a day after Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) said it would support party president Muhyiddin Yassin to take over as head of government, with several other parties pledging the same.
PH, following Dr Mahathir's earlier refusal to attend a coalition presidential council meeting, had on Wednesday named Mr Anwar Ibrahim as its choice of prime minister.
PH, in its Saturday statement, said it is a coalition that received a clear mandate in the 14th general election.
“We are against any attempts for a backdoor government especially those involving kleptocrats and traitors who will ruin all the efforts of reformation to date.
“Therefore, Pakatan Harapan declares its full support for Dr Mahathir to be nominated as prime minister," the statement read.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir has offered himself as prime minister again, after a meeting with PH leaders in the morning.
"I am now confident that I have the numbers needed to garner majority support in the Dewan Rakyat (House of Representatives).
"I am therefore prepared to stand as prospective candidate for prime minister," he said.

In his statement, Dr Mahathir, who is the interim prime minister, reiterated that he is against any form of cooperation with individuals known to be corrupt and were part of the kleptocratic administration that PH worked hard to rid off.
"As a matter of principle, I had conveyed this to the Bersatu MPs in the meeting yesterday," he said.
Bersatu had on Friday said that its decision to nominate Mr Muhyiddin as prime minister was made at a meeting attended by 36 Bersatu MPs.
Dr Mahathir said he did not sign any statutory declaration in support of any individual.

He stressed that he would not work with politicians from United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). UMNO is among the parties that have thrown its support behind Mr Muhyiddin.
"I can accept them individually for so long as they are proven clean. Perhaps Tan Sri Muhyiddin is more relaxed towards this approach," Dr Mahathir added.
Separately, Mr Muhyiddin and several other political leaders were seen arriving at Istana Negara in the morning, according to Malaysian media. They left about 40 minutes later.

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 29 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s daughter Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir was the one who helped Pakatan Harapan (PH) reach out to him for fresh talks which ultimately resulted in him being the coalition’s new choice today for the prime minister post, a report said.
According to news portal The Malaysian Insight, Dr Mahathir had been maintaining his silence and had refused to talk to any politician, including his own party Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (PPBM) youth wing chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman.
The portal said PH leaders had sought Marina’s aid for a brief meeting with Dr Mahathir, reporting that there was a “breakthrough” late last night when the interim prime minister and PPBM chairman “relented” to Marina’s request for him to meet the PH leaders.
“It took a few phone calls and text messages but finally Marina managed to get her father around to speaking to PH leaders,” an unnamed source was quoted saying by the portal.
The portal said the meeting between Dr Mahathir and PH resulted in a similar deal that was agreed on last Friday, again citing unnamed sources in saying that the new deal would see Dr Mahathir being able to hold and subsequently choose when to give up the prime minister post after Malaysia hosts the Apec summit in November and that the new government would have technocrats.
Also citing sources, the portal said there were “encouraging signs” regarding support from MPs in Sabah and Sarawak, while also noting that their support would have to be secured for Dr Mahathir to become the next prime minister.
This morning, Dr Mahathir announced that he had met with PH leaders and that he was confident he had the numbers to become the next prime minister with their endorsement.
PH’s presidential council in a separate statement said the coalition fully backed Dr Mahathir to be prime minister.

KUALA LUMPUR: Mr Muhyiddin Yassin will be Malaysia’s next prime minister, the palace said, following a week of power struggle in Putrajaya.
Comptroller of the Royal Family and Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin, in a statement on Saturday (Feb 29), said the king, after meeting all members of parliament, has found that the parliamentarian who likely commands the majority is Mr Muhyiddin, the Pagoh MP.
“Therefore, the king has selected Muhyiddin as the prime minister in line with Article 40(2)(a) and 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution,” he said.
Swearing-in will be held on Sunday at 10.30am at Istana Negara, Mr Ahmad Fail said.

“(Malaysian King Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah) said the appointment of the prime minister cannot be delayed for the well-being of the people and the nation.
“He believes this is the best decision for everyone and hopes this puts an end to the political crisis at the moment,” he added.
Speaking to reporters outside his residence after the announcement, Mr Muhyiddin said: "I would like to express my thanks, thanks to Allah, that I have been given the appointment of the 8th prime minister, with the permission of Maha Mulia Yang Di Pertuan Agong".
"I would like to thank everyone who has given their moral support to me and ... I hope all Malaysians will accept the decision that has been announced today."
He added: "Please pray for a brighter future for us all. Thank you, asslamualaikum."
Dr Mahathir Mohamad's shock resignation on Monday had plunged Putrajaya into political turmoil. The king accepted his resignation and appointed him the interim prime minister.
On Saturday morning, political leaders took turns to meet the monarch to present their preferred prime minister candidate, after he said he could not identify any parliamentarian who commands the majority following a two-day consultation with all members of parliament.

“(Malaysian King Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah) said the appointment of the prime minister cannot be delayed for the well-being of the people and the nation.
“He believes this is the best decision for everyone and hopes this puts an end to the political crisis at the moment,” he added.
Speaking to reporters outside his residence after the announcement, Mr Muhyiddin said: "I would like to express my thanks, thanks to Allah, that I have been given the appointment of the 8th prime minister, with the permission of Maha Mulia Yang Di Pertuan Agong".
"I would like to thank everyone who has given their moral support to me and ... I hope all Malaysians will accept the decision that has been announced today."
He added: "Please pray for a brighter future for us all. Thank you, asslamualaikum."
Dr Mahathir Mohamad's shock resignation on Monday had plunged Putrajaya into political turmoil. The king accepted his resignation and appointed him the interim prime minister.
On Saturday morning, political leaders took turns to meet the monarch to present their preferred prime minister candidate, after he said he could not identify any parliamentarian who commands the majority following a two-day consultation with all members of parliament.

Mr Muhyiddin Yassin, who pulled Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) out of Pakatan Harapan (PH), had partnered with Barisan Nasional, Parti Islam Se-Malaysia and others in a bid to form a new government.

PH had initially said on Wednesday said it would nominate Mr Anwar Ibrahim, after Dr Mahathir put forth a proposal to form a unity government that cuts across party lines.
In a twist of events, PH announced on Saturday that it would back Dr Mahathir to be prime minister again. Dr Mahathir, too, said he had the numbers to form the government.
Mr Anwar said on his Facebook that he had informed the king that PH had changed its stance and would nominate Dr Mahathir as PH’s candidate for prime minister.
“I am touched by the support given to me, but I choose to put the country’s interests before my own,” he said.

Coup Finally Fails As Compromise Breaks Out - UPDATE COUP SUCCEEDS!
Back-door plotters who have sought to over-turn GE14
PH has agreed to back Mahathir and with that he this morning declared he is confident he has the numbers to trounce a dash to the palace by the UMNO/PAS backed rebels from his party. It means Malaysians can look forward to a return to essentially the same ruling coalition voted in at GE14, minus rebels, and the backdoor coup is therefore quashed.
It is a good outcome after a narrow escape from an attempt to upturn the decision made by the electorate at the last election. Yesterday was one of nail-biting negotiations, secret meetings and above all counting of numbers. There had been treachery on all sides and rash decisions made.
SR for one reckoned Mahathir had cooked his goose after his own deputy Muhyiddin stepped forward to claim his crown and an outraged PH had walked away, demanding the commitments of the election manifesto be fulfilled.
But by nightfall, armed with strong numbers yet faced with the possibility of continuing chaos, those PH leaders again placed compromise first. Sarawak Report learned they decided to step back from the threat of going it alone after Mahathir pledged once again that he would not deal with crooks from UMNO. He would stick to the handover promises of the previous Friday agreement, so rudely upturned by the rebels from PKR and Bersatu.
So, barring endorsement from the palace, the old man seems set to return to fight yet another day. Diminished but vindicated in his principles, after so many had suspected him of cooking up conspiracies with Zahid, Hadi and all the rest. The AG who resigned on Friday is now begged to return. The court cases against the crooks can carry on.
Mahathir turned out not to be the traitor to PH as many last week had feared. However, there was rank treachery from others in both PKR and Bersatu, which for seven days destabilised the alliance and stretched to breaking point relations between himself and the remaining leadership in the parties.
Those traitors led by Azmin Ali and the surprise group behind Muhyiddin had plotted with to return the defeated minority parties of UMNO and PAS to power through a backdoor coup, which they hoped would put them both in the top positions. Forget their commitments to the electorate of reform and combatting corruption. If they had succeeded in breaking the remaining ranks of PH (and they almost did) then the numbers beckoned with East Malaysia willing to support a winning coalition.
PH’s leaders in the end demonstrated the patience they always have for the sake of the greater good and today backed Mahathir once more to return to the palace and to his position as prime minister.
Sarawak Report hears that the commitments of the Friday agreement remain – he will hand over by or around the time of APEC. The talk of a Unity Government as opposed to a PH Government appears to have receded – this is essentially ‘Harapan 2.0′, PKR have claimed. There will be many changes to the compromise cabinet, expected to be shorn both of rebels and those Mahathir claims for now undermine his quest for unity.
After months of destabilising rebel activity this bruising week has at least flushed out trouble-makers, exposed traitors and confirmed who can still be trusted by the people.

Najib sacked muhyiddin for raising 1mdb issues. So najib will not be freed. Zahid who is current umno boss is also facing several financial irregularities charges. I doubt if he will be let off also as he may try to go for pm post himself.

Umno gave concession to the monarchs, particularly johore monarch wrt power plants, sand export to singapore from johore river, forest city, state land which he dold yo china developers for billions of RM....The monarchs, particularly johore monarch have soft spot for umno.
Whatever, Najib can now sleep better at night. Eventually, I doubt he'll go to jail, but probably just a substantial fine. The current AG (Thomas) had already resigned yesterday and I believe he'll be replaced with someone who is pro-UMNO. Furthermore, LGE will no longer be the finance minister anymore, so what corruption trial for Najib? Also, JLow can start planning for his return soon and don't need to be a fugitive. Muhyiddin is also not that clean either. I heard that he once mediated for the forced sale of lands in Johor and profited enormously.
