Temasek Holdings turns in record profits of S$18b last yearBy Timothy Ouyang, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 26 August 2008 1308 hrs

SINGAPORE: Temasek Holdings posted record profits of S$18 billion in 2007, double that of the year before.

The company's S$10-billion net investments outside of Asia last year exceeded the S$5-billion invested in Asia for the first time in Temasek's history.

Temasek's portfolio grew to S$185 billion - an increase of 13 per cent from S$164 billion previously. This includes a S$10 billion injection by the Singapore government.

Its portfolio exposure to Singapore also fell for the first time from S$62 billion to S$60 billion partly due to the sale of Tuas Power.

Singapore continued to account for a smaller part of its growing portfolio - 33 per cent last year, as compared to 38 per cent in 2006 and 44 per cent in 2005.

Temasek said on Tuesday it believes financial services will perform well in the future. The sector is the largest segment of its portfolio, accounting for 40 per cent currently.

Total shareholder returns by market value in 2007 was seven per cent, on the back of lower marked-to-market gains due to market uncertainties.

Going forward, Temasek said the volatility in global financial markets will remain high and stay at elevated levels for the near future.

But the imbalances will create investment opportunities.

When asked about its high exposure to volatile markets, Temasek said it still sees strong fundamental value in the United States and Britain.

It added that it is not distracted by short term dislocations in the financial market and continues to be focused on being a long term investor.

It also sees investment opportunities in Latin America and Mexico, but declined comment as to whether it has plans to invest in Lehman Brothers.

The usual fuzzy figures.... SGD185 less SGD164 is 21 billion.... out of which 10 billion comes from fund injection from the sgp govt....

so how did the SGD18 billion come about when it is only 11 billion and not stated how much this 11 billion is from overseas or from squeezing sgporeans....

Lost tons of money overseas and need to sell state assets cheeply to FTrash to cover up the whole. At best, u call this creative accounting. At worst, it's TREASON.

From people like me who paid a lot of taxes but it is an honour for me to be in the top tax bracket.

I bet you are not even qualify to pay taxes

Everyone in Singapore pay taxes in one form or another. The proper and fair method is to compare what percentage in total taxes one pays in proportion to one's wages.

I wonder where the govt squeezed the S$10 billion for Temasek?

Recall they changed the Constitution a couple of years ago to allow transfer of $ from left to right pocket without it being considered as touching the reservers? In other countries, the govt would have been impeached when the PeeAm embezzled state money to help his wife this way. In Peesai, it's eulogized and justification for another round of ministerial pay hike. Peesai is easily the most leegally corrupt cuntry in the cosmos now.

That's bullcrap . I pay a lot more taxes than poor people and therefore I am contributing more to the nation.

That's not my point. You told another forummer that he probably does not pay tax. Unless he/she is a hermit living in a cave, no one in Singapore escapes tax.

I just added another note that to have a just comparison, one has to compare what percentage of one's wages goes to paying taxes.

As mentioned in the media, the investment in Indonesia, Thailand, US banks & brokerage houses all went wrong. Even the purchase of Khoo Teck Huat shares in Standchart was bought at the peak. Therefore it is amazing that there is a net profit of 18b amind financial turmoil.

How to "verify" their statements???? Was the account audited & verified by a third party or independent party???? OR is it just a statement released by Temasek themselves????

Thanks for the enlightenment!

Now I see the reason behind it.

It only means your skills set are in higher demand and thus command a higher salary.

If there is no demand for rocket scientist, the rocket scientist will also be unemployed even though the rocket scientist may be the smartest in the world.
