Thailand, Singapore and Japan least miserable on Earth: Bloomberg Misery Index

PUBLISHED1 HOUR AGO

SINGAPORE/HONG KONG (BLOOMBERG) - Thailand, Singapore, and Japan are three of the world's least miserable nations, thanks to falling prices and low unemployment.

That's according to a misery index compiled by Bloomberg which combines the cost of living with the strength of the job market.

Japan and Singapore can thank falling prices. Thailand, meanwhile, has long scored well because its official unemployment rate remains low.

The Land of Smiles really is the happiest place in the world, at least in terms of holding a job and keeping the rising cost of goods in check.

The Misery Index, computed by adding inflation to the unemployment rate, gives Thailand a score of 1.11 per cent, which is the best - or least miserable - for all 74 economies surveyed by Bloomberg.

Singapore and Japan are close runners-up, with 1.40 per cent and 2.70 per cent, respectively.

The UK ranks as the 17th least miserable country, while the US takes 21st place. China follows closely in 23rd spot.

Venezuela is at the other end of the scale as plunging oil revenues have led to chronic shortage of food and medicine, and inflation is running at 181 per cent.

With an index of 188.2 per cent, the South American country is easily the "world's most miserable" place. It is followed by Bosnia at 48.97 per cent and South Africa with 32.9 per cent.

Thailand's unemployment rate was around 1 per cent at the end of June, while its consumer price index rose 0.1 per cent year-on-year in July versus a 0.4 per cent increase in June.

Even so, it's not all roses and rapture for the South-east Asian nation.

Slowing inflation, though welcome for consumers, may signal a less than healthy economy. Disinflation is a sign that demand for goods and services is insufficient to match supply in an economy, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp global market analyst Satoshi Okagawa said.

It encourages consumers to delay purchases until goods become cheaper, further lowering demand. In this deflationary spiral, wages will drop, Mr Okagawa added.

This proves what a good job the PAP is doing. I would like to congratulate LHL for a job well done.

dissect the population and take away the top 1 percent,,,,,,,,,,, it will expose the 99 percent of most unhappy souls
survey looks at the surface and it is absurd to count it as representative

Uncle Sam...Were you born yesterday....??

All of the reports are manipulative and concocted to suit their agenda..??

Why are we rank 154th on the world press index for many years.

When Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton visited Singapore, our old folks were seen practicing Tai Chi.

You know how fake is this..

I can't understand why sinkies are unhappy with Singapore besides being unappreciative of the good work done by PAP.

No external or civil war, safe streets, good schools, good jobs, money to spend, developed society.

Try living in a shitty place like jiuhu or somalia instead.

Sinkies have been borne with a mentality that " the grass is greener on the other side '. It can't be helped as even the government keep drumming it into our mindsets that we are a small country unlike other countries which have rich hinterland and natural resources. There is always the dissatisfaction even when we have achieved so much. So, while we have a high standard of living, people are still not satisfied. Houses are expensive. So are cars. Sinkies are rich but they don't feel rich in Singapore. With their wealth, they expect a much better quality of life. It is possible in other countries , but not in Singapore.

u seem to be contradicting urself alot,if sinkies are rich, they wouldnt be complaining that housing and cars and other basic necessities are too expensive, rich entails being able to afford what u need easily and even most of ur wants.sinkapore has a high quality of life, but they expect a much better quality but its only possible outside of singapore,if other countries and even 2nd world countries like msia can afford u a better quality of life then ur high quality of life isnt very high isnt it?anyone can enjoy a high quality of life anywhere in the world if they are rich, who are the ones enjoying the so called "high quality of life" in singapore?only the rich and those who can afford it?cause i sure am not enjoying it myself and a large percentage and large class of singaporeans around me sure aint.unless u suggest i go out and get rich myself which defeats the purpose doesnt it?a country has to be able to afford everyone a high standard of living or at least majority of the population as much as possible 90 percent of it and not just the rich or select few.

The mentality ' the grass is greener on the other side ' is true. Look at the number of sinkies going across the causeway to buy up on groceries, petrol and even houses. For the money they have, they can get more value in other countries.

Sinkies are not stupid. Even if you are a millionaire, why do you want to spend your million here and get only a third of the value when you get the full value of your spend in other countries ?
