There should be no sacred cows here that shouldnt be slaughtered. An MP who serves fulltime and draws a salary could also provide better service to the people they are supposed to serve.

What happens when it becomes a full time job is that MPs lose touch with the struggles of the common man. As the saying goes, in order to understand what someone is going through, you have to walk in his shoes.

An MP was never meant to run town councils. That hare-brained idea was hatched by LKY in an attempt to thwart the opposition. Neither were they supposed to be tied up with endless "meet the people" sessions on an ongoing basis. They were supposed to be ordinary citizens leading ordinary lives who spoke up for their constituents in Parliament because they were personally experiencing the problems that everyone else faced.

I sometime worry if these decisions are made for the short term. An opposition MP does not have a fall back position like PAP MPs who have a guaranteed safety net if they are no longer MPs. She should continue to carve out a career at least on a part-time basis for security.

How did MPs end up full time if it was not meant to be? If competition resulted in this, it may not be a bad thing.

It may not be a bad thing for MPs to move out of working life and maybe go into self employment. If they can lift themselves to financial freedom, it says something about their capabilities.

Well, i suppose its a double edged sword. PAP MPs in the west are well respected because of MPS and strong grassroots. Yet in the northeast, LTK has carved out a stronghold with his strong rapport with the citizens of hougang via MPS and a lot of dedication. MPS using void decks, while others get a/c offices, and the people will appreciate the effort he put in just to serve them, and as you see they are willing to reciprocate.

I went to a MPS once to try siam my littering fine as i was still earning nsf pay then. didnt see the MP, just a bunch of crony grassroot helping them send generic appeal letters. and obviously nea reply me that they reject it.

In some countries that have the Westminster parliamentary system, all MPs have to be fulltime.
That is a statutory requirement. They cannot hold another job together with being MP.

JW5's post is as valid as any other. He raised a relevant point against scroobal's 2-face stance (that its ok for PAP MPs to be full time, but not ok for opposition)

if not for the heroics of JW5, many here would not be aware of the manipulative agenda of scroobal.

It has turned out that way in many countries but it is not the way it is supposed to be in the Westminster model. The term "MP allowance" stems from this fact.

MPs have never been paid a salary because it is supposed to be a part time job. They are given an "allowance" to enable them to carry out the duties or serving their constituents.

interesting You should mention the Westminster model, who's hallmark is a multiparty system of governance. we are far, far away from a multiparty system.

Unlikely. No company can bar you from speaking about public policies, especially if you're an MP now. You can speak up against issues which you've expertise on, not on issues which you've only general knowledge. To resign from the company or quit from her professional, how can she be equipped to debate on Medisave and healthcare insurance issues, which the Minister of Health is presently conjuring up more draconian schemes which are raising the Medisave premiums, yet not solving the root of the rising healthcare costs.

I think she is just another hypocrite, like so many of the MPs we've, whether opposition or PAP, all the same bunch of hypocrites, which a high allowance of $18,000 per month can easily duct-tape their mouths in parliament. Geez!!

If she does it full time and it helps the constituents and she can win the next election I do not see a problem.

And if she wins the next election and serve a full term, after 10 years she will get pension. But dont know if pension will be removed. If she is capable, she xan easily get a job in the private sector again when she steps down as MP..But since she is doing a good job. she wont loose her seat unless she choose to step down.

The PAP full time MPs,,I not so sure if they can retain the seat if its an SMC
