Lee Li Lian quits her job to be a full-time MP

As long as she does her part and we, including you, give her our supports. She will be safe and secure. This also goes to show that she is serving with heart and not $$$ on her mind.

Yes I totally agree. She should be applauded for taking on her MP job full-time. She gives her 100% dedication and I know the people will reciprocate in kind. Sporeans are not daft and most have had enough of the PAP. So Li Lian has everything going for her.

Actually the Westminster Model was designed not to have full-time MPs. The entire parliamentary sittings and calendar is designed around the fact that they have a full time career elsewhere. And that MPs are reflective of society.

MPs usually give up their day job when they take up political appointments such as Ministers, Political and Parliamentary Secs etc. These are full time politicians as opposed to being full time MPs.

They however have allowances to run a constituency office with support staff.

In some countries that have the Westminster parliamentary system, all MPs have to be fulltime.
That is a statutory requirement. They cannot hold another job together with being MP.

Actually it should be the other way. The ones we see often on TV are full time political appointment holders such as ministers and fulfilling the role of a political office bearer. Most conservatives have interest in business. On the labour side of the fence, many are unionists.

An MPs tenure can range from 3 to 5 years. Not a career or a job by any stretch of the imagination.

There is also the long held Westminster tradition and unwritten rule that when campaigning a candidate does not say that they are going to be full time MPs so as not to undermine others and the original designed role of an MP as a member of the wider society.

Not true. Most countries have MPs who are full time.

I am not talking about the system in the UK. I am referring to derivatives elsewhere.

she looks like a bimbo, however she is still better than TPL.

but as a man, i still think women shouldn't drive...

Doesnt matter at all tamby.... as long as these people are willing to do thr ight thing ...and not pretend to be part of Team Noble and Transparency when in truth they are just Team Corruption and Treachery

We got to be careful with this. The PAP can play this game to the hilt. They have the means. We can't. We may even end up frightening good quality opposition candidates who can't risk giving up their day job for one or 2 terms. Even if they want to sacrifice for a noble cause, their families will bear the brunt and they may not support the decision. So our already small pool becomes smaller.

TPL is at risk, so it was not a surprise. Its common knowledge that West Coast, the ex Ayer Rajah of TCB is also at risk and during the PE, PAP long term grassroots supporters crossed over. So we have FMH

I am not talking about the UK either. In fact to my knowledge i can't recall any that requires its MPs to be full time.

What game can the PAP play? Besides, I think your gloomy outlook on this full-time MP issue is unwarranted. Whether or not to assume their MP jobs full time is a decision made by the individual MP, whether Opposition or PAP. Its a personal choice, and one which is arrived at after careful deliberation of personal finances and targeted standard of living. Each knows what they are in for.

Most MPs in the UK do it full time. Plus they travel longer distances than Sinkie MPs--Imagine travelling to and fro Scotland or North England to London
