CRYING FOR HELP - from Indonesia

Joe

Had the same problem when I was there recently. I switched around and found that they allow for a while then the message comes on. It from the ministry according to their service staff. Staff told me that Hotel are exempted. Both URL impacted.

Raised to Sam sometime ago. I think he is looking for a spare entry point.

ok scroo guess not everywhere's the same like in Bangkok. Can understand about this is I'sia as they have to deal with terrorists.

Actually the ministry did as both sites are associated with Porn - adult content, not terrorism. Changi T3 also banned for adult content. Heathrow Airport lounge also recently blocked for adult content.

There are few companies in the world that search websites on behalf of ISPs and create a blacklist based on various categories. Soon this will spread as alot of NGOs are pushing govt to block adult sites as default unless they call up and authenticate age - above 18 for some European countries and they use credit card as proxy and charge you a notional $1.

Muslim countries age unfortunately not the issue , very strict on porn.

I travel alot and started seeing this late last year. First time got hit in Indonesia was in June. Really screw up your entertainment. They also started blocking anon sites.

I would suggest that you ask your manager to appeal and maybe the ISP can convince the ministry.

I could register another 5 domains but it's not a long term fix. The best solution for everyone is to surf with vpn. I use it 100% of the time even though I live in country with a very benign environment when it comes to attitudes towards porn and politics. It just makes good sense. You lock your car and your home so why wouldn't you lock your internet connection.

The reason could be this. Dun forget this forum was previously the "dirty" kind.

Indonesia blocks 1 million porn sites, is just getting started

Indonesia can be a very strict place when it comes to the Internet (see Man faces five years for 'God does not exist' Facebook post). Most recently, the country's communications and information ministry has pulled the plug on pornographic websites in advance of Ramadan, which begins at sunset on Thursday.

We're not talking about just a handful of key portals. The Indonesian government has killed access to 1 million porn sites, all of which were based outside of the country. The ministry estimates there are around 2 billion websites providing pornographic content.

Apparently this is only the beginning. Minister Tifatul Sembiring said Wednesday his office would target more sites through the country's holy month, and beyond. "We will block more porn sites during Ramadan, though that doesn't mean that we will allow such sites to operate during the rest of the year," Sembiring told The Times of India. "Online pornography is an industry and the producers always seem to find new ways of escaping detection."

This is nothing new for Indonesia. Especially in recent years, the country's officials have increased their control over offensive online content, particularly related to porn and Islamic slander. The government regulates anything it deems inappropriate through legal and regulatory frameworks and through partnerships with ISPs and Internet cafés.

It all started in 2007 when some websites were blocked for brief periods of time. In April 2008, Indonesia ordered ISPs to block YouTube after Google reportedly did not respond to the government's request to remove the film "Fitna" by the Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders, which purportedly mocked the Prophet Muhammed.

In May 2010, when an account on Facebook promoted a competition to draw the Prophet, government officials asked the social networking giant to close the account and demanded all ISPs to limit access to the account's link (due to opposition from bloggers and civil society, the demand was disregarded). In January 2011, Research In Motion agreed to filter pornographic Internet content on its smartphones. The BlackBerry maker worked with local carriers and the Indonesian government to implement the blocks in what it called a "top priority."

Thank all of you in this thread who helped me especially Chonburifc. Yesterday I had a chance to use my mobile to get into singsupplies and this morning in office also able to get in. I can say I'm alright now. Hope the Indonesian authorities do not get too smart.

I am thinking of LeongSam's suggestion about VPN so I went to google and look into it before I kenna twit from some of you. What I found was mostly telling me that businesses use this for secure connection between HQ and branches or traveling salespeople. I am still not able to find someone writing about using this as a private user. So what is this VPN thingy does it mean that if I use it I will be able to get into sammyboy.com here in Jakarta? And what other advantages it has? Can I install in MacBook?

strongvpn is for private users. I use it 100% of the time as I found it actually speeds up my connection as well as provide an additional layer of security.

I've configured it on ALL my computers and on my iPod too and enables me to bypass all blocks when in airport lounges, at McDonalds and any other public wifi hot spot that censors the net.

how to do eh boss? Need to call anyone eg service provider? or VPN people?

Thank you LeongSam.

I will purchase it later today. As I'm really bad in this stuff just a few final questions

1. Does it work on MacBook?

2. I am using 2 MacBooks and a Thinkpad but I use only one at a time do I need to purchase 3 packages?

3. iPhone is it got to purchase separately and for each phone only because I am using more than 1 iPhone.

Thanks

You only need one account for any number of devices. The only restriction is that you can only sign in with one device at a time. EG if you're already connected to your VPN account with your MacBook, you cannot connect with your phone until you disconnect your MacBook.

All the instructions are at http://strongvpn.com/setup.shtml

For MacBook OSX http://strongvpn.com/setup_macosx_10.5_l2tp.shtml

For iPhone (iOS) http://strongvpn.com/setup_ios_l2tp.shtml

The best thing about it is that if you choose a US server, you can sign up to all sorts of services that are normally only reserved for US residents such as netflix.

If ever you have any problems, make use of their live chat assistance. The guys and gals there are very, very helpful.
