Gigi Lai Never Saw Showbiz Retirement as Sacrifice

gigi-lai2.png

Retiring from showbiz in 2008 after marriage, former actress Gigi Lai (黎姿) proved her business savvy as the cosmetics firm her brother started became publicly listed in 2019 under her tenure. Interviewed on a recent Chinese program, Gigi shares on her life decisions, and said she never say leaving showbiz as a sacrifice!

Turned Down Wong Kar Wai’s Film offer
Having acted in countless dramas such as The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber <倚天屠龍記>, War and Beauty <金枝慾孽>, she announced her decision to end her showbiz career at a publicity event for The Gem of Life <珠光寶氣> when she was just 37. Asked if she misses acting, Gigi recalled how she had been greeted by valet parkers at Causeway Bay, after the movie Young and Dangerous <古惑仔> was aired. “I was amused, they were very attached (to the characters) and it made me feel a great sense of satisfaction, getting fans express their liking for a role I did…makes me feel like everything is worth it, in retrospect,”

While she once expressed regret on turning down famed director Wong Kar Wai’s (王家衛) film invite, she does not want to dwell on spilt milk, saying, “The role might not have been suitable for me, perhaps this is another kind of predestination,”

Leaves Showbiz to Salvage Twin Brother’s Beauty Business
Putting family first, Gigi left her acting career to fully care for her brother Stephen (黎嬰) after his near-fatal accident in 2007, to give him the “motivation to continue living”. Faced with the decision to discontinue Stephen’s business or to keep it going, the 52-year-old said that while he was unable to speak or move, he could think and feel as per normal, thus she hoped to give him a goal to work towards by taking over the reins of the business he had so painstakingly built up.

The actress would proactively make daily and monthly “reports” to Stephen and discuss work matters with him, including feedback from workers or customers.

Women need to be Financial Independent
Despite feeling fatigued at times and not having time for herself, the actress, who entered showbiz at 14 to help support the family, has long been used to taking family matters as her own. With her brother’s condition stabilizing in recent years, her parents have urged her to take time off for herself while they promise to care for him.

Named one of Hong Kong’s richest actresses with a net worth of USD13 million, Gigi shares advice on the show that regardless of your spouse’s wealth, a woman needs to have her own career, so she can pay for what they like, and even “treat (their) husband(s) to a candlelit dinner”.

Crystal Fung To Get More Likeable Role in “Sinister Beings 2”

crystal-fyy.png

Reportedly shelved by TVB for some time, 28-year-old former Miss Hong Kong Crystal Fung (馮盈盈) appeared to have appeased the management with her recent cooperative attitude and is set to revamp her image with a tailor-made leading role in upcoming drama, Sinister Beings 2 <逆天奇案2>!

With a bright start to her showbiz career, Crystal was heavily promoted with ample opportunities on both drama and variety fronts. However, her candid and straight-talking personality also made her the subject of Hong Kong netizens’ fodder. While Sinister Beings <逆天奇案>, which she co-starred in along with Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) and Rosina Lam (林夏薇) achieved a 30-point viewership and became the most-watched drama of year 2021, Crystal was nicknamed “national temptress” by viewers, for coming between Ruco and Rosina’s well-liked pairing.

Crystal’s star waned when she was rumored to have treaded on management’s toes with three wrong moves including wanting to make her relationship with news anchor boyfriend Martin Chung (鄭衍峰) public (the pair has since broken up) and jumping on the NFT bandwagon without TVB’s knowledge.
Stripped of many opportunities, she was “downgraded” from hosting large-scale variety programs to becoming a mere guest star, and was conspicuously missing from heavyweight dramas. She was finally paired with actor Karl Ting (丁子朗) for new drama You Are Not Her (transliterated) <妳不是她>, after an idle period over two years.

Originally rumored to be removed from the cast of Sinister Beings 2, Crystal did not rest on her laurels but instead returned to University of Hong Kong to pursue a Master’s degree. Amid talk that she was “frozen” by TVB along with actresses Andrea So (蘇韻姿), Iris Lam (林凱恩) and Ali Lee (李佳芯), she shared on social media that she had passed Chartered Financial Account Level 1 examinations, known as the “gold standard” of investing – evoking speculation that she might be eschewing the showbiz route for a career in finance.

Making a U-turn with a softened stance, Crystal recently said in media interviews that pursuing her master’s was a “long-time wish” and that she had in fact requested leave from TVB to focus on her studies, adding that she will continue filming if schedules work out. “I did not disappear nor leave, the dramas and programs I filmed will be aired in time, on completing my studies, I will give everyone a totally new feeling so you can get to know me again!” Backing up her cooperative attitude with action, Crystal was totally hands-on during gameshow Not Very Funny <真係唔好笑>, even pulling a stocking over her head and sacrificing her looks for the show’s comedic effect.

Confirming that filming for the sequel will start next month with full return of original cast members, producer Lau Ka Ho (劉家豪) revealed while Crystal’s role this time round will have an increased likeability factor. “Crystal’s character will do her best to solve crimes and turn over a new leaf, the role will be very positive and viewers will surely like her.” Praising the actress for “high EQ”, the producer said she took the “National Temptress” label in her stride, and added that the actress has told him she will “do her best to perfect the role”.

Tiffany Lau Reveals Fitness Routine

Tiffany-Lau-The-Invisibles.jpg

With The Invisibles <隱形戰隊> currently airing, Tiffany Lau’s (劉穎鏇) fit figure stuns as she performs her fight scenes. Many believe that the 25-year-old actress has what it takes to become an action star.

Even though Tiffany has always been fit, she still had to undergo rigorous exercising prior to filming. “Joel Chan (陳山聰) and I go to the same gym, but we have different trainers. Prior to filming, I went to the gym a minimum of five times every week. If I couldn’t go to the gym that day, I would run for one hour and 45 minutes – roughly 5,000 to 6,000 kilometers.”

As the only woman on the Tactical Forces Team, Tiffany felt the pressure to gain muscle to convincingly portray her character. “The gear and equipment are already 20 pounds…I think it’s important for character to be strong and muscular.”

Aside from her intense workouts, Tiffany had to take two scoops of protein powder with drinks, and eat plenty of chicken breast, yams, and eggs. Although she does have cheat days, Tiffany tried her best to limit her sugar intake despite having a sweet tooth for ice cream.

Filming With Real Guns and Endless Bruises

Filming with real handguns in The Invisibles, the cast trained with firearms professionals on set to ensure all safety precautions were taken. Tiffany said she even practiced with an instructor prior to filming.

However, bruises and injuries are often inevitable during action scenes despite the most careful precautions. Tiffany would discover new injuries after every fight scene, unfortunately they were only minor.

Hong Kong actress Ali Lee (李佳芯) attracted attention when she attended an event at the horse racetrack. Recently, the actress made a post on social media to remind herself to smile which led many netizens to speculate that Ali is unhappy with her lack of projects. In response, Ali denied the rumors and shared that a project is in the works!

Ali explained, “There should be a drama coming, but I only have heard about it. I have seen producer Macro Law (羅永賢) but I don’t know the details. I am still waiting for the script. Every time I come out, everyone seems to ask me if I have a drama. I will let fate decide. In my opinion, I really want a good character and a good project, but it depends on the company’s arrangement.”

When Ali wasn’t working, the actress was busy finding a way to improve herself. During the pandemic, Ali revealed that she stayed home to watch and study from movies. Ali shared that it was good to have time to think and nurture her creativity, “I didn’t care about gaining anything. It’s enough to live happily every day. It’s rare to be able to learn what I want to learn.”

Ali continued, “I learned about emotional therapy and drama. These few years have been very fulfilling. In the industry, there are many friends who are under immense stress and would suddenly cry. It made me want to learn about ways to de-stress and decrease insomnia. I hope I can help others and myself.” Ali also shared that she took singing lessons and would continue the lessons because it will help with her acting.

In terms of Ali’s personal relationship, Ali laughed and responded that she will meet her Mr. Right when the time is right. Ali shared, “I would still go out with friends. I don’t want my worries of being photographed to impact my life. It’s not worth it. Of course, when there is good news, everyone will naturally know.”

Phoebe-Sin-Ruco-Chan.jpg

Accepting an endorsement job as a couple, Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) and Phoebe Sin (單文柔) expressed they are very pleased with the compensation. He replied, “No worries, she’s trusted me with the rest of her life, so I’ll take good care of her. If I love her, then I’ll love all of her. I actually help her choose her dress every time there is an important event, so I hope it turns out well.”

Ruco boldly praised the estheticians for their beauty, but Phoebe said that she was not jealous and that the most important thing is that she becomes more beautiful after their treatments. Ruco joked that he was trying to get on their good side so that they would take better care of his face. Phoebe shared that Ruco’s skin has always been good, “There are people who suspect that he might have done some work, but after you feel his face you’ll know it’s the real deal.” She gives his new physique 100 points, and praised him for his manly appearance. In a recent livestream, he had a lot of fun speaking Cantonese and Mandarin and he felt like he was on a variety show.

Wong Jing’s “Night Beauties” Skirts Back to Hong Kong’s Red Light District in the 1980s

Night-Beauties.jpg

Produced by Wong Jing (王晶), Night Beauties <一舞傾城> may be TVB’s raciest drama in a long time. Revolving around the lives of those working in the glittering night club scene in the 80s, the series stars Monica Chan (陳法蓉), Elaine Yiu (姚子羚), Jacky Cai (蔡潔), Michael Tong (唐文龍) and Mat Yeung (楊明).

The drama has been touted as the Hong Kong version of Ruby Lin’s (林心如) 2021 drama, Light the Night <華燈初上>. In addition to appealing to the audience’s nostalgia to the 80s, Night Beauties also entice with its exploration of sisterly bonds and scintillating subject matter.

Although the overall reception has been favorable, the drama has also been criticized for sending a bad message. In one scene, a mother persuades her daughter to work as a night club escort, while the first few episodes explore borderline taboo and touchy subjects, such as rape and several bed scenes.

Jacqueline Wong Opens Up on Cheating Scandal in Rare Interview

Jacqueline-Wong-2.jpg

Disappearing from the limelight after her cheating scandal with Andy Hui (許志安) four years ago, Jacqueline Wong (黃心穎), 34, makes an official comeback as a singer this year by releasing two songs. Accepting her first public interview in years, Jacqueline boldly opens up about the subject and talks about the decision behind her career shift.

Although many things have happened in the last several years, including the COVID-19 pandemic, the negative buzz around Jacqueline’s sudden return indicates that netizens may have pushed it to the back of their minds, but have not completely forgiven her actions.

Jacqueline knew her return to the entertainment industry would not be an easy path. Commenting on the scandal, she expressed, “I used to care a lot and I didn’t know how to handle the situation – but I’m much calmer now. I’ve already heard the worst of the comments and have seen how people treated me – this was the result of my actions. There wasn’t much I could do, and the only thing I could control was to be myself.”

Depressed After Scandal
Recalling her darkest times, the singer-actress said her initial reaction was to sleep all day as she did not want to face reality. Her emotions turned to uncontrollable crying, and she became deeply depressive and unmotivated.

Luckily, Jacqueline recognized she needed help. She enrolled in acting classes to keep busy and did not allow herself to think about anything else. She was also fortunate to be accompanied by her family after returning to Hong Kong, and recovered faster after adopting her dog.

Asked why she chose to launch her music career, Jacqueline explained that music helped release her emotions. “A door opened for me – I was so lost, and music was the only thing that made me feel anything. At that time, I really didn’t know what else I could do.”

Working with Lai Man Wang

Although Jacqueline was immediately frozen by TVB after the scandal, the station eventually invited her to go back and film dramas and variety shows. However, Jacqueline ultimately chose the road untravelled.

Enlisting the help of her boyfriend, RubberBand drummer Lai Man Wang (泥鯭), to produce her two singles, Jacqueline said he requested that “no fighting would be allowed” if they worked together despite her opinionated personality. Despite Jacqueline’s lack of confidence in music production, Lai Man Wang motivated her and continued to give words of encouragement.

“Night Beauties” Put Jacky Cai in Spotlight

Jacky-Cai.jpg

Recently Jacky Cai (蔡潔) has been receiving a lot of attention for her role as Monica in Night Beauties <一舞傾城>, finally ridding herself of her image as an unimpressionable actress. Many netizens praised Jacky for her elegant line delivery and her convincing bed scene with Mat Yeung (楊明), as well as her jealous looks when seeing Mat and Elaine Yiu (姚子羚) together.

Jacky shared that she had actually gone through a lot of styling changes for her character. The stylists took inspiration from Cherie Chung’s (鍾楚紅) iconic wavy hair from the 1980s, but Jacky admitted to possessing a “pretty big head” and “the hairstyle looking like a helmet so we had to change it many times!” This was the first time Jacky had to drink so much alcohol while filming, but it was a fun and unforgettable experience. “The entire cast travelled to Foshan and we would drink and chat after work. It was like going back to our school days!”

When Jacky entered the industry, she decided on her English name choice since she is a fan of Jacky Cheung (張學友). She honestly believes that she has been very lucky in her career so far. She had experienced periods when money was tight, but she never struggled to survive. “I left the shelter of my parents for many years. Ever since I started working, I learned to be independent. From the start when I initially had no friends in Hong Kong and was clueless, now I gained a lot more friends and a sense of familiarity of this industry 10 years later. I can work with people whom I like–what more can I ask for? I am really lucky!”

The paparazzi recently reported that Jacky’s living standards have improved since she gained leading roles. She now drives a luxury car, wears a brand name watch, and has moved to Caldecott Hill in Kowloon. She often shares pictures of herself and her cat at home, which has floor-to-ceiling glass windows and a balcony. According to current market data, a three-room unit in Caldecott Hill costs over $10 million Hong Kong dollars, with some units reaching as high as HK $17 million. Currently, a 955-square-foot unit is asking for HK $36,000 in rent.

Due to the pandemic, Jacky has been unable to see her parents for the past few years. “I’ve moved to a better place. I hope they can come visit when they are free, or I can go see them too. They always worry about me being alone. They nag me about eating too much takeout and tell me to sleep earlier.”

As for Jacky’s love life, Gregory Wong (王宗堯) was the only boyfriend she has publicly confirmed. However they split in 2017 after only seven months of dating. Jacky will leave it to fate, as it is impossible to plan too much when it comes to relationships.

Raymond-Lam-Charmaine-Sheh.jpg

Decked with familiar TVB stars, Modern Dynasty 2 also features Him Law (羅子溢), Kelly Cheung (張曦雯), Toby Leung (梁靖琪), and a cameo appearance by Gallen Lo (羅嘉良). The drama was supposed to start filming at the beginning of this year, but was delayed due to uncertainty over the female lead.

Nancy Wu, Kelly Cheung and Matthew Ho Turn Heads in “Narcotics Heroes”

nhe.png

TVB’s newest thriller Narcotic Heroes <破毒強人> is hyped as a plot with Hong-Kong style police and drug lord that is filled with tension and revenge. Starring Moses Chan (陳豪), Nancy Wu (胡定欣), Edwin Siu (蕭正楠), Kelly Cheung (張曦雯), Matthew Ho (何廣沛), Bowie Cheung (張寶兒), Ram Chiang (蔣志光), Ashley Chu (朱智賢), and Rosita Kwok(郭柏妍). While the drama is filled with an impressive cast, netizens are impressed by Nancy, Kelly and Matthew’s characters.

Nancy Wu as an Ironclad Financier

While drawing praises for her performance in Mission Run <廉政狙擊> and Big White Duel <白色強人>, Nancy is once again taking on a strong charismatic character.

In the Narcotic Heroes, Nancy plays a wealthy financier who is only moved by money. In the official trailer, Nancy’s character looks confident and can be seen saying, “I really like money. Use the tens of millions as a blessing. I will miss it.”

Kelly Learns Her Own Stunts

Kelly will be playing a Senior Inspector of the Narcotics Bureau and will be seen in a number of action-filled scenes.

Ahead of the drama’s release, TVB released a tidbit of Kelly’s training where she was seen practicing her positions and movements. The training was strenuous and Kelly had to repeatedly practice her stance, sparring, shooting and rolling.

Aside from cutting her hair short, Kelly shared that she had to do homework and receive special training, “I had to exercise more to cope with so many action scenes. In fact, I was in pain after the first day of training. I’m thinking that after today’s training (the second day of movement training), I will be in pain for a few days.”

Matthew Ho as a Mute Smuggler

Matthew’s role is one to look out for as he plays a mute who smuggles drugs to escape poverty and provide for his sister and childhood sweetheart played by Rosita. In his job, Matthew’s character forms a bond with a drug lord played by Moses.

Although Matthew is skilled at memorizing his script, the actor is now tasked with memorizing sign language for the first time. Matthew confessed that it was a challenge, “Of course, I have learned it in class. I was silent and communicating in sign languages for the whole hour.”

Matthew added, “However, it is very difficult during filming because it was not the same as reciting dialogues. There are many times where I would forget the signs in the middle of filming and make an NG take. Everyone will understand after watching. Sometimes my hands get cramped up from repeatedly signing.”

Roxanne Tong Loses 20 Pounds for Wedding

Roxanne-Tong-2.jpg

Getting married at the end of the year, Roxanne Tong (湯洛雯) is a busy bride-to-be. Like most brides, she has been taking care of most details during wedding planning.

Appearing at a skincare event with Kelly Cheung (張曦雯) and Ali Lee (李佳芯) yesterday, Roxanne excitedly talked about her wedding. Hoping to retain some privacy, Roxanne said she has not even shared some details with Kenneth Ma (馬國明). Although she wanted him to help, she did not want to waste time explaining. She joked Kenneth only knows what he and the groomsmen are wearing. When asked if she has faith in his fashion sense, she replied, “I can’t be bothered–he’ll get a stylist to help. I don’t think he’ll wear his soccer jersey!”

Roxanne is currently feeling pressure because she did not do any wedding planning for the first half of the year. As the big day looms ahead, she realized many things are quite complicated. Where possible, she would like to simplify activities and wants to omit the bridal games.

Hoping to look her best, Roxanne has been cutting sugar to lose weight. Although already losing 20 pounds, it has been a struggle not eating dessert. This in turn has made Roxanne more irritable and easily frustrated. Sympathizing with Kenneth in dealing with her moodiness, Roxanne said, “Once he senses I’m getting frustrated, he’ll tell me to eat ice cream but I’m starting to get used to cutting out sugar.” Although dieting is difficult, she hopes to lose five more pounds.

Although Kenneth has now started filming for a new drama, it will not affect their wedding date. His vacation request has also been approved and they will be soon head to Europe to take their wedding photos.

Tavia Yeung to Film Comeback TVB Drama

Tavia-Yeung-and-Him-Law.jpg

Since tying the knot with Him Law (羅子溢) in 2016 and welcoming two children, Tavia Yeung (楊茜堯) significantly reduced her work output. Her last project with TVB was 2017’s Another Era <再創世紀>. With her children almost 4 and 2 years old, Tavia is looking to refocus on her career again. Invited by TVB to star in new drama Black Moon (黑色月光), Tavia is rumored to be taking on the role as the anti-hero and will star opposite Rosina Lam (林夏薇).

The drama is produced by Chung Cheng (鍾澍佳), who just completed News Queen (新聞女王) with Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼). Tavia expressed confidence in Chung Cheng’s work. “It’ll definitely be great. I’ll absolutely take on a project that I feel suits me well. I’m happy filming again, as it has been a few years since I’ve worked with TVB. I’m also familiar with Rosina outside of work. We previously worked on Momentary Lapse of Reason <收規華> together, so we know each other well.”

Asked who will be watching her children if she goes back to work, Tavia responded, “Him just finished work and is back home. If he is available, then he’ll take over watching the kids. We’re both comfortable with it. If the timing and character is suitable, I’ll consider coming back. Other than taking care of the kids, I also hope to put more effort into my career.”

When Him was approached for comments regarding Tavia’s comeback, he revealed the couple already has a consensus. “We both place our children as top priority. If my wife has work lined up, I won’t accept work at the time. Lighter jobs that don’t require a large time commitment are okay though.”

In addition to starring alongside Rosina, Tavia will also act with her sister Griselda Yeung (楊卓娜) for the first time. When reached for comments, Griselda replied, “Tavia briefly mentioned it, but I wasn’t sure if it would work out or not. This is the first time we would work together in a drama. We have never been in the same scenes before.” On whether she is against working with her sister, Griselda responded, “It’s not like I’m filming kissing or intimate scenes with her. I don’t know what the story is about, so I’m unsure how the characters will interact.”
