'Bonus' not a dirty word
By Nur Dianah Suhaimi

Mr Lim said people should not mistake a bonus as 'somebody getting something extra and undeserved and out of line with the current economic situation'. -- ST PHOTO: ARTHUR LEE CH

BONUS has become almost a dirty word in these times, with its meaning highly misunderstood, Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Lim Boon Heng said on Saturday.
Speaking at the launch of this year's Singapore Kindness Month, he noted that public anger arose in the United States over large bonuses paid to executives of failed American corporations because of the economic downturn.

'Nowadays, the word 'bonus' is almost a dirty word,' he said in his speech. 'There has been great misunderstanding over what the word 'bonus' entails. You have to understand that in today's context, companies' bonuses are part and parcel of the overall wage package.'

'We now operate differently from the past. So, let us not get overexcited whenever we see the word 'bonus' being used,' he added.

He said the uproar over bonuses paid by troubled firms like AIG was because the American public perceived these to have come from government bailouts.

But Mr Lim said people should not mistake a bonus as 'somebody getting something extra and undeserved and out of line with the current economic situation'.

He stressed that, with the downturn, it is even more important for Singaporeans to be kind and considerate towards others.

He also called on Singaporeans to be kind to foreigners living here, such as students from overseas.

Mr Lim is the man who recommended over the media for the retrenched job seeker (diploma holder) to be low income security personnels. Singapore is a difficult place for Low income earners to live in. Whereas Singapore is a paradise for ultra high income earners like Mr Lim. Follow his advice at your peril. Tell him to get lost from PMO! If our society is kind, there is no need for a kindness movement. Replace the word for Kindness with Hypocrisy, it sound right for Singapore society. Singapore Hypocrisy Movement.

Please tell Mr Lim to stop being hypocritical. He has no idea of the suffering outside his ivory tower.

BONUS is definitely not a dirty word...

BUT 8 months BONUS is a dirty word in a civil/public service during a recession,,,,

AND also lying about lowly salaried staff (compared to your ministers high pay, most people are low level staff) is a DIRTY WORD LBH...

CCB, you may join the unemployed after the next GE

Mr. Lim should be happy to know that he is becoming popular by the day with his wise remarks. He should be happy to know that homeless and jobless people are becoming more aware of the PAP and himself and where they stand towards solving economic problems and making sacrifices of large salaries and bonuses to themselves. It is crystal clear to the people of Singapore and even PRs.

Sporns should be kind to everyone who is kind to them, but where justice needs to be met, it has to be met. So who are the CBs who have engaged in economic genocide against them? Take them out then!

Aiya, just do the following renaming:

1) change all PAP and Civil Serpent salaries, bonuses, perks, benefits and pensions to Welfare.

2) change all low-income minimal wages to Bonus.

Welfare for civil servants is BAD

Bonus for elderly peasants who pick cardboard and clean toilets is GOOD.

... instead of encouraging kindness towards elderly, handicapped, little animals ... he tell sinkees be kind to AIG CEOs and do not begrudge their large bonus ... (ofcos the unspoken here is - eh sinkees, pls donch be so unkind to Capitaland Liew ML regarding his $20m hor !! we know u guys have been saying unkind & begrudging things abt him) ...

horrible ! PAP ministers are beyond redemption ...

Re: Lim Boon Heng ask you to be kind and considerate to the PAP!

Actions must reflect the words and vice versa. As such the PAP has reflected its words with its own action- which is money is so supreme and so important that even if AIG and GM take back their own bonuses, the PAP will not.

In that sense, they must be given a pat on the back for being so loyal to the concept of money. Maybe some of them do think money as their God(s). Maybe some would believe that they can bring these cash back to the other world too.....
