You're quite a pesky host over advice and advise. There's no difference as long as it's understood in context. You can also practise or practice law or medicine. You can also table a motion on a table but nothing is in motion.

Unlike the word "practice" which can be a noun or a verb depending upon whether you're writing American or British English, the distinction between "advise" and "advice" is very clear cut. "Advice" is a noun and "advise" is a verb on both sides of the Atlantic.

Singaporeans should spend a few minutes a day going through the list at http://public.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/errors.html#errors

It'll help immensely should they decide to emigrate to an English speaking country. No sinkie is going to get a job if they can't write grammatically correct English in their job applications and résumés.

If practise and practice can evolve into being merged as interchangeable noun and verb, why not advise and advice? In any case, this is gossip forum as you run it and should know it, not an HR department or English class.

I once saw a HR manager mixing up "advise" and "advice" in a memo. Not cool story. I LOLed!

Frankly, it's good to have someone correct our English. I would rather have a Singlish exterminator as Administrator than a Singlish perpetrator.

It's quite possible that it could happen in the future. However, current English rules are quite specific regarding the distinction between the two.

While errors in a gossip forum are of no consequence, if they aren't corrected here, the same errors will be made when it DOES matter eg a letter to the press, an important speech, a job application and so on.

Another very common error that's becoming more frequent in this forum is the inability to distinguish between "complain" and "complaint". All too often, I see "You should make a complain..." when it should be "... make a COMPLAINT".

"Complain" is a verb and "complaint" is a noun. You're not going to tell me that they should be interchangeable too are you?

Good grammar is like good grooming. It helps create a positive impression. I'm trying to do my part in helping sinkies avoid making fools of themselves. My English is hardly perfect but I do try my best to be grammatically correct.

Do you really think that I'm bothered about whether Leongsam or anyone else's English is better than me and to be stood corrected? There wasn't such thing as Singlish as recent as 20 to 30 years ago. It began with stupid Chinese parents who couldn't really speak English properly but inisisted to speak broken English to their kids, thinking that'd improve their kids' English. From that broken English came the Singlish as we know today.

You should also include the correct spelling for the word "definitely". All too often, you see "definately".

Should be "Very sound ADVICE....".

"Advise" is a verb.

If you're not happy with the advise/advice issue, why don't you take to the streets and occupy the area around whatever fuck building. That'll force the poster to show his hand.

That's what the rest of the world is doing now that they've put up long enough with english incompetence.

There's no point whining in this forum. Nobody is going to take any notice and things will still be the same when you reach 75.
