Its shock closure could not have come at a worse time.
Potentially hundreds, if not thousands, of travellers have been left in the lurch after popular coach and travel agency Five Stars Tour abruptly closed all eight of its branches across Singapore on Wednesday.

In its latest statement as of 5pm on Thursday, the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) said it has received over 250 complaints -- 203 by phone, 37 walk-in and 17 online -- complaints against the tour agency, mostly due to its failure to honour terms of the agreement.

News of the travel agency's closure was first reported by Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao. In its report, it said Five Stars Tour had applied for a liquidation notice with the police.

When this reporter visited its main branch at People's Park Complex on Thursday morning, a notice at its entrance read that the agency "has closed for business and stop providing services with immediate effect. We will be returning all passports to customers through registered article in the next few days".

It also said customers with unfulfilled trips can make claims through travel insurance or file claims through the Small Claims Tribunal or CASE.
A customer, who only wants to be known as Ms Chua, went to check out the head office at People's Park Complex.
The 30-year-old housewife said she had paid Five Stars Tours S$2476 just earlier this week for a trip to Beijing for two people.
She had gone on two tours organised by Five Stars Tours previously, and had a good impression of the company, she said.
When she heard that the company had shut its doors suddenly, she checked the receipt issued by Five Stars Tours, and realised that the staff who sold her the package and handled the paperwork for her did not sign on the document.

Worried, she tried to call the different branches, and eventually made a police report when she could not get a satisfactory response.
She recounted: "I wanted to pay by credit card, but the staff told me they only accepted cash as it was a special promotional package. I didn’t think much of it then, but I feel so stupid now.”

Despite Chinese New Year being just around the corner, the travel agency that employed over 200 staff gave no advance notice or warning before shutting down.

昨天傍晚一家本地较有规模的旅行社8间店面同时关门结束营业,也懂得把让人可以留言狂骂的Facebook关闭,在经过10多个小时新媒体上网民们提供的点点滴滴资料看来,这是典型的有预谋的关门。

在将近20年来,因为所从事的电脑行业类型,涉及的是许多行业开始电脑化的那个年代和阶段,和开始实行GST消费税的时期,就都是我们这批人在忙碌着,在那个时期,许多公司的桌上真的还有算盘。

就因为各行各业的电脑资料和会计软件都会有它的特性,我们往往也会接触到许多行业的不能说的不是秘密的秘密,以及管理层的各种嘴脸。

在多年来多次金融风暴的前后,我们也听闻许多事,这些事,从各种蛛丝马迹中,可以找到几种模式。

这当中,新加坡、马来西亚、台湾、香港、印尼等地的商人的态度都会有所不同,至于其他国家的,是不属于这种模式中的主要“成份股”,所以先不说。

当然,赌徒心态的人,在靠运气为主的行业中,他们是博,不是拼搏,博对了,就是大洋房大汽车,博错了,就是破产,他们都面不改色。

真正有老板爱上赌场大搏杀的公司倒闭的特征,往往都是公司收入稳定,却毫无征兆的把资产卖给别人然后颓然倒下。

而被情妇搞得妻离子散瓜分公司的类型,则是凌迟类的,消息是可以是传了很久,大家都看到了,公司却要倒又不倒的,最后往往还是倒。

而这当中,除了不脚踏实地的抽佣类靠口才类,以那些能事先收取定金或全数金额配套的行业的风险是最高。

所以过去本地许多嫌钱多的美女们被骗了健身美容配套,个个都被骗了几千元,总额都是百万计,就可以知道,就是那类“有心人”在策划的。

就如昨天有不同的网民提起Pte Ltd有限公司倒了之后,老板还是可以住洋房开大汽车,其实这是古董旧常识,实际上没这样的事,欠钱的照样的会被追得个人破产,如果Pte Ltd可以欠钱后放它倒,你我还有剩?(这句是新马福建华语)

新传媒的新闻提到早在去年3月,就已经因为同类传闻访问了那家旅行社,但那时旅行社否认。

等到昨天下午4点关门倒闭,6点新传媒先透露,才有人透露说他们的员工早已经有3个月拿不到薪水。

然后,有人说员工们一起帮公司撑。

然后,有人说早在去年11月,有导游透露说这家旅行社会有财务问题。

然后,有人说之前已经说公司因为扩充他们马来西亚的业务而蒙受亏损,这个是正面的说词。

还有人好心的说可能是因为马币下跌而造成损失,这样的可怜?可以同情???吗???

再然后,开始有人说老板好赌,这种话一出,就是负面的。

无论如何,看来员工们知情不报,不是愚忠愚孝的问题那么简单。

接下来,电视台访问到的受害者说,本来市场标准的订金只需要500元,但旅行社硬要收取1000元,所以他共付了3000元。

然后,有早已付定金的说他去查证给了定金准备下榻的酒店,酒店说根本没预定,也没收到任何钱,难道这还不算是欺诈?

昨天,在最后的一个小时,还有旅行社职员“好心”的打电话告诉顾客赶快去买旅游保险,就可以获得赔偿,因为准备关门了。

而上中文网站留言的最大一批网民其实是买车票准备回乡过年的马来西亚人,他们的损失较少,个人是100多元为主,但是,现在的问题不是钱,是认为没车位可以回乡,接下来的混乱与不满可想而知。

损失几千元的,是买去旅游的配套的,这些人的平均款额比例更大。

总结资料,旅行社早在几个月前已经拖欠店租,员工CPF和薪水,这两大部份,看来起码也有20万元以上,会有50万元吗?也有可能。

然后,单单只是马来西亚公民回国过年的车票,如果是几天里几十趟,有数千人,数额其实不算太多,30万元上下吧?

那么,最无辜损失最多的外国旅游配套的购买者有多少人?旅行团有多少组?牵涉的总数,不可能少过50万元吧?

说到来,果然又是超过百万元,果然又是早已精心布局收取大量现金,反正不必出货,最后一分钟还在拼命收取比较高的定金。

这种事一发生,那些钱都不必想了,要拿回一部分也要等主要债权人 – 银行和政府方面的CPF作出决定,其他人根本没权力要求拿回钱。

如果政府不修改条例,要求这些做无本生意的把押金先交上才能开门做生意,那以后收钱了马上倒闭马上跑路的事照样还是会发生。

不知道为什么,联想到“马上倒币”和“马上跑鹿”的雕刻为何没人敢做。。。。

现在,我在晚报FB把简单的几个问题丢出来,它就包括了

1。消协建议受影响公众向旅游保险索偿或报警。那么,是否意味着公众不要去消协浪费时间?
2。而警方却劝公众去消协或小额赔偿法庭索赔,那谁的话可以听?
3。护照被扣押的都一定要先报警吗?警方能优先处理索回这些人的证件吗?有网友在别的网页提醒说是拿着签证收据去新加坡旅游促进局处理
4。什么情况下,只买车票回家的人可以额外买旅游保险?如果没有这样的选择,是不是政府的疏忽?有网友说车票不是已经包括保险了吗?
5。旅游业的各种协会为何不能及时介入帮忙?有,今天下午,看他们能“帮”什么。
6。现在另外再买车票的人,会被坐地起价的其他快车公司砍菜头吗?

看到那么多内容,大家有没有发现少了什么?

答案是:没有政府部门的任何政府人及时的在昨天出面安抚公众,只有警方要大家冷静。

就是这样的慢吞吞模式。

Just now on TV ch 8 news the staff gave interview and all the staff that went on camera to give interview all of them had very very heavy malaysian liang pang qiang.

ACRA still show the company's status as "LIVE" leh. I wonder when its bankers will appoint receivers to take charge. Since it si still live, go find the boss and harass him for refund.

That's not a problem, because a core part of its business revolves around tour packages to Malaysia. You need the local know-how and expertise.

CPF Board should step in immediately upon detecting significant employees from this company not getting their CPF and have their license revoked straight away. Talk on consumer protection wayang only, fraudsters continue milking $$$ out of the system. Huat ah!

The woman is like most stupid sinkies, must be of the 60% side...when you give cash to any organization etc...you must get an official cash receipt stamped & sign...even though that does not guarantee much, but at least it is valid. This is the same mentality in which they vote too, they just give "cash' without any receipts & previously...had 'toured' with them...so damn bloody trusting..no wonder all these people prosper.

There is plenty of uncertainty living in Spore. If you are not among the elites you can easily lose your job at any time, end up with expensive medical bills, get dengue, get hit by a foreigner's bicycle/bus driven by a foreigner/Ferrari owned by foreigner,....

The only thing that is certain is the regular prices hikes by the gov't.

The only thing that is certain is the regular prices hikes by the gov't.

Do not forget their "FREE GIFTS" too...they gave this month...be thankful ha ha ha & they regularly UP their rates & hidden rates...did you vote to get this??

small claim? how small? could be tiny or jus compensate consumers with some bus fare?

Like most other things in Singapore, getting approved or endorsed by some official organization means jack shit. Refer to Health Sciences Authority and Slim 10 pills, or 'approved by MOE' private schools.

I'm sure Nicoll Highway was 'approved' by the LTA too, prior to its collapse. :wink:

The 5 stars travels is just an agent. They dont own bus/hotel...........................
The just take commision from bus fare/air ticket/hotel room rate/.................................
Their cost just rental and staff. How can it bankrupt just like that. And employee also damn stupid why never report to MOM for salary that never been fully paid on time and every month only partial salary being paid and drag for one year.

Who the hell uses 5 Star anyway? I always use Chan Brothers or else just book tour packages online with the airlines directly.

5 Star Travel mostly using bus travel to Malaysia and Thailand.
Air ticket nowday mostly people book direct online on the airline website.

Employer may contribute the CPF but never paid salary how???
To deter such case keep happening>>>MOM and gov have done nothing to really prevent it from happening
Here my suggestion>>>
1. CPF borad will have automatic trigger level if CPF contribution didn't paid on time after 48hr due.
2. MOM should have more channel for reporting salary not paid by full every month>> email/hotline/counter/legal counsel/.................all name will be protected. Those report will get the salary paid in full 1st even if company bankrupt>> so more are willing report such case before company really when into bankrupt.
3. ACRA should increase capital paid up for certain company business type /service such as travel agency/money remitance where consumer are very easy target and have nothing to recover back.
4. If the emplyee salary never paid in full but the director and management get paid, bonus & etc. The management and director should be jail for at least 6 month. The salary should be paid in full for lower rank/pay before and salary for director/management
