About Us

Five Stars Tours respectably represent the five brothers of the Lim family and with the solidarity of the five hearts, they would and will endeavor with their boldness, to glow and grow in the tourism industry. In Chinese "伍星 - Wu Xing" is homonymic to "五星 - Wu Xing ", and as suggested in English, Five Stars also resembles the ultimate quality and standard. Adjunction with the composing of radical “イ- literally means: Human”, the name is known to have intensified with the "people-oriented" philosophy.

Five Stars Tours first started as a moderate outlet located at The Adelphi next to the current location of today's High Court. As the saying goes, “Everything is difficult at the outset”. The business was challengingly started up with some unacquainted tour packages and focused mainly on the express bus services. A few years later, to meet the increased demands for express bus services, the company was relocated to Golden Mile Complex, where business gradually grew and prosper.

The tourism industry is filled with high risk and brimming with endless unpredictable destructive impacts that impede traveling. The incidents which have stricken Five Stars Tours severely, were the “financial crisis” in 1997, "911" in 2001, "SARS epidemic" in 2003, the “economic downturn" in 2009 and the latest "H1N1 influenza" which has adverse impact on the company and had disastrously plunged Five Stars into unprecedented deep waters. However, with the persisting faith of the "people-oriented & customer-friendliness" values, our Managing Director, Mr. Ken Lim cagily led the entire company with his beliefs, and eventually managed to overcome the challenges and difficulties; breaking through the difficult times. As Mr. Ken Lim confidently believes, an invulnerable organization can only achieved with genuine "sincerity" and “integrity”. Hence, he called up for restructuring and coalesced Gunung Raya Travel & GR Travel after the setback, to restore the momentum & morale of Five Stars Tours.

Over the last two decades, Five Stars Tours has expanded across the island with 8 branches, more than 200 dedicated staff, and a growing customer base of more than 300,000. Currently, with the new head office relocated to People’s Park Complex, Five Stars Tours face aggressive competition amidst the other travel agencies. To remain competitiveness, Five Stars Tours is determined to provide comprehensive one-stop hassle free traveling services, and continuously make improvements on the quality of existing tour packages and express bus services. Besides being proficient in the services of express coaches, flight booking, holiday cruises and worldwide tour packages, Five Stars Tours also provides travel insurance and visa application services. Five Stars Tours - Let your journey begin with us!

My thought is Five Stars was associated more with regional travel, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Vietnam, etc. margins are thin, while expectation is high.
Singaporeans travel habits have since changed, as they become more affluent and venture further, with longer trips and more exotic places, such as Europe, US, South America, NZ, Australia, Eastern Europe, etc. Where I believe the margins are better.

While they might have tried to do that, perhaps it's not easy to shake off the initial "brand" that is known for budget travel to Malaysia, Thailand etc.
Used to travel to Malaysia, Genting, Strawberry Park/Hill, Malacca or KL via coach using Five Star, but that was a pretty long time ago.

Was it 5 stars travel agency or some other travel agency was the one who started providing the so called "luxury coach bus" tour package between S'pore and Malaysia in the early years of 2000? I think it's a double deck coach bus with very comfortable chair, meals and entertainment provided on board. Back then business was very good and they soon expanded their business to more outlets. Many competitors tried to copy the business concept but not so successful.

Did it star moses lim in it?

Now from yahoo news, so Five Stars Tours advise customers to go to CASE, sounds like they will pay back money???

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/popular-travel-agency-five-star-tours-abruptly-shuts-down-033549516.html

Travel agency Five Stars Tours abruptly shuts down, customers stranded

Sign on one of the branches:

"We are sorry to inform you that Five Stars Tours has closed for business and stop providing all services with immediate effect.
We will be returning all passports to customers through Registered Article in the next few days.
For customers with unfulfilled trips, please make claims from Travel Insurance if you have bought any.
Otherwise, please file your claims through Small Claims Tribunal/CASE. - Five Stars Tours"

Its shock closure could not have come at a worse time.
Potentially hundreds, if not thousands, of travellers have been left in the lurch after popular coach and travel agency Five Stars Tour abruptly closed all eight of its branches across Singapore on Wednesday.

News of the travel agency's closure was first reported by Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao. In its report, it said Five Stars had applied for a liquidation notice with the police.

When this reporter visited its main branch at People's Park Complex on Thursday morning, a notice at its entrance read that the agency "has closed for business and stop providing services with immediate effect. We will be returning all passports to customers through registered article in the next few days".

It also said customers with unfulfilled trips can make claims through travel insurance or file claims through the Small Claims Tribunal or CASE.

Despite Chinese New Year being just around the corner, the travel agency that employed over 200 staff gave no advance notice or warning before shutting down.

Many Malaysians who reside in Singapore typically book their bus tickets through Five Stars, known for its luxury coach services to several destinations in Malaysia. Besides Malaysia, it also offers group and free and easy tours to locations across America, Australia, Asia and Southeast Asia.

Malaysian Leong Khoon An, who works as an electrician in Singapore, told Yahoo Singapore he had bought return bus tickets to Malacca for the coming Monday.
When the 31-year-old heard the news of the agency abruptly closing its doors, he was “taken aback”and felt “cheated”, he said in Mandarin.
“I’ve been a loyal customer, buying my bus tickets from Five Star for at least the past five years. Now they just up and close without refunding us, or even informing us,” he said.
The return ticket cost him about S$100, and to purchase a replacement at this point in time would be even more expensive and troublesome,he added.
Another Five Stars Tour customer, Yvette Xu, 23, had bought a pair of tickets to Genting Highlands.
The university student, who made the purchase only a few weeks ago, said: “If the company knew they were in trouble, yet continued selling tickets and packages to customers, they are really irresponsible.”
She said she will lodge a report with the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE).

Despite the agency winding up business, its website (sg.fivestarsonline.com) was still live at the time of reporting and offering travel tour packages to several destinations in Malaysia as well as South Korea and Taiwan.
One advertisement shows a promotion for gift vouchers at 10 per cent off. The promotion is supposed to run from 21 December to the end of January.
Yahoo Singapore called all Five Stars Tour’s main office at People's Park Complex as well as its 7 branches, but the calls went unanswered.

According to The Straits Times, Five Stars had been struggling to stay afloat in recent months -- staff had not been paid CPF contributions for months and it was forced to sell its headquarters in People's Park Complex last year before renting it back from the new owner.

It also reported that the National Association of Travel Agents Singapore (Natas) is monitoring the situation closely but could not tell how many customers are affected as they have been unable to contact Five Stars' management.

Update from Zaobao, the first SPH website to report the story yesterday. Passports will be mailed back to customers, customers can claim from insurance company, etc:
http://www.zaobao.com.sg/realtime/singapore/story20140109-297584

This is too funny, wtf does this loyal customer expect from a company on the verge of bankruptcy? Get invited to an appreciation dinner?
