The defiant soldiers of Snake Island are actually 'alive and well,' says Ukraine's navy

The Ukrainian soldiers defending the tiny Snake Island in the Black Sea were thought to have been killed last week.
(CNN)The Ukrainian defenders of Snake Island -- who were all feared dead after their defiant response to threats from a Russian warship -- are actually "alive and well," according to the Ukrainian Navy.
All of the soldiers on the tiny island in the Black Sea were thought to have been killed in an attack on the first day of Russia's invasion of Ukraine last Thursday.
According to a purported audio exchange, one of the Ukrainian troops had responded to a warning from an approaching Russian vessel to lay down their weapons or face bombing by saying, "Russian warship, go f*** yourself."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said later on Thursday that 13 soldiers on Snake Island all died "heroically" by Russian bombardment. But -- after the Ukrainian border guard said that it had information disputing the deaths -- a statement on Monday from the country's navy suggested this was certainly not the case.

Is the Ukraine-Russia meeting a path forward or political sideshow?

Is the Ukraine-Russia meeting a path forward or political sideshow?

According to the navy the soldiers on the island repelled two attacks by Russian forces but in the end were forced to surrender "due to the lack of ammunition."
The statement added that Russian attackers have completely destroyed the island's infrastructure, including lighthouses, towers and antennas.

Russian state media also showed the arrival of the Ukrainian soldiers in Sevastopol, Crimea where they are being held.
Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, sits about 30 miles (48 kilometers) off the southern tip of the Ukrainian mainland in the northwestern Black Sea. It's about 185 miles west of Crimea, the Ukrainian territory that Russia annexed in 2014.

Though it is only about 46 acres (18 hectares) in size, a report last year from the non-partisan Atlantic Council think tank called it "key to Ukraine's maritime territorial claims" in the Black Sea.
Highlighting its strategic importance, Zelensky chose Snake Island last year as the spot for an interview with Ukrainian media in advance of a summit to try to reverse Russia's annexation of Crimea, the Atlantic Council report said.
CNN's Brad Lendon, Tim Lister and Josh Pennington contributed to this report.

So fake. Notice the reporter in the video not wearing any helmet? At least try to wayang abit like the one below. Wow, the armed Russian soldiers left after old farts shout "go home" at them. Isn't it contradicting their report on the Russians attacking civilians?

Posts falsely claim Steven Seagal with Russian forces in Ukraine

Social media posts feature an alleged CNN tweet that claims American actor Steven Seagal took up arms alongside Russian special forces in Ukraine. But CNN said the tweet -- which includes an image of Seagal in fatigues and carrying a weapon -- is fake, and his representatives also rejected the claim, saying the actor wants peace for both countries.

"Intelligence agencies from around the world have spotted American actor Steven Seagal among Russian special forces positioned around the outskirts of Gostomel airfield near Kyiv captured by Russian airborne troops," said the text of what appeared to be a tweet from a verified CNN account, which controversial podcast host Joe Rogan shared on Instagram on February 28, 2022.

Screenshot taken on February 28, 2022 shows a now-deleted Instagram post

Rogan later removed the post, saying: "I deleted my earlier post about Steven Seagal being in Ukraine because it was parody, which isn’t surprising, but honestly it wouldn’t be surprising if it was true either."

More examples of the claim -- which began circulating online after Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 -- appeared on Facebook here and on Twitter here.

Seagal does have strong links with Vladimir Putin. The 69-year-old "Under Siege" star has been granted Russian citizenship and has spent time with the Russian president.

But CNN spokesman Jonathan Hawkins told AFP that the alleged tweet is "completely fake."

Seagal's manager, Chris Nassif, called the social media claims "absolutely untrue... Steven Seagal has not been in Eastern Europe for the past 4 months."

Nassif added: "He wants peace for both countries."

Another representative for Seagal said the actor is in Dubai, not Ukraine, as the posts claim.

"There is zero truth" to the social media claim, and the photo is lifted from Seagal's 2017 movie Killing Salazar, the representative said. "It is unfortunate that people with large followings don't do a little more fact checking before sharing such content to millions of people around the world."

A Google reverse image search showed that the same photo of Seagal used in the alleged tweet appears on the Rotten Tomatoes page for "Killing Salazar," also known as "Cartels."

AFP Fact Check has debunked other inaccurate claims about the conflict in Ukraine here.
