I find this quite a hypocritical topic. Most of us rich or poor would find ways to avoid or cushion NS if we could.
This is an amazing response.
The issue here is not whether Patrick Tan dutifully served his two and a half years. We all know he did.
Neither is it whether he filled in all the correct forms to get disruption, whether he loves the country, whether he was willing to serve his NS like other guys, whether he is a clever man, whether he likes research or is good at it, whether the rest of us would find ways to avoid or cushion NS, etc etc. The answer to all these questions is probably yes.
The issue is how he managed to do something during NS which he happens to like, as evidenced by the fact that he is still doing the same thing. It can't be because he's merely good at it, because thousands of NSFs are and were in vocations and units which they neither like or are good at. There's no evidence that his father helped him. But the fact is that he got what he wanted, which rarely ever happens during national service. They don't call it "national service" for nothing.
The logical conclusion must be that he is a super world class scientist, who had to do what he did during his NS, otherwise Singapore "would be in trouble". We are now eagerly awaiting with bated breath his earth shattering breakthrough research findings.
