SINGAPORE : Two teenagers have been arrested for brandishing a knife on board an MRT train last year.

Police said the youths, aged 16 and 17, were in the train on 31 December 2009 with two friends.

One of the suspects took out the knife from his bag and posed for a photo, which was taken by one of his friends.

The police said a photo of both the suspects with the knife in a train was later uploaded onto a website.

The suspects are also being investigated for gang-related offences.

They have been released on bail.

The police are trying to locate the other two youths.

Persons found guilty of carrying offensive weapons or found to be in the company of persons carrying offensive weapons can be jailed up to three years and given a maximum of six strokes of the cane.

After 1 whole year then they take action. If not for the recent gang murder case, I think the police will boh chap this incident. Because of the uproar from the public, the police LL now take action.

Police have arrested two male youths, aged 16 and 17, for brandishing a knife whilst onboard an MRT train.

Their picture was first posted on STOMP on Sep 30 this year.

Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police Ng Boon Gay said, "Carrying dangerous weapons in a public place is a very serious offence. We will not allow this kind of behaviour to be left unchecked and will come down hard on such offenders, regardless of their age.”

The police spokesperson said in a news release:

"Investigations revealed that the two suspects and two of their friends were onboard an MRT train on 31 December 2009 where one of the suspects took out a knife from his bag and posed for a photo which was taken by one of his friends.

"A photo of the two suspects committing the act was also subsequently uploaded onto citizen journalism website STOMP.

"The two suspects have since been released on bail, and are being investigated for Unlawful Possession of Offensive Weapons and Consorting with Persons with Offensive Weapons under Sec 6(1) and Sec 8(1) of the Corrosive & Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act, Cap 65 respectively.

"Both suspects are also being investigated for gang-related offences. Investigations are ongoing to locate their two friends who were involved in the incident.

"Any person who in any public road or place carries or has in his possession any offensive weapon, or found in the company of the such person, may be liable on conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years and shall be liable for caning of not less than 6 strokes."

The sheer audacity of these two youngsters shocked STOMPer throwyoungsterface, who had sent this picture to STOMP in September.

He explains:

"I saw this picture of two youngsters carrying a parang into the MRT and smiling to a camera online and I think it is way too much.

"Where did they get the parang from? It's a form of weapon. They can be charged with possession of an illegal weapon.

"They carried it like this in the train and no one even stopped them from taking pictures with it on the MRT.

"I think something must be done -- they deserve to be taught a lesson by the authorities!

"Such a shame!"

What the police is saying is, without the DTE and Fajar Road incidents plus one or two thers, we won't have investigated this case. Previous cases forced us to look into this case.

I think most Sporeans forget that it's the gang of 4(MM, Mrs. MM, PM, Mrs. PM) that's causing so much grief to Sporeans.

Everyone else is just small fry or commonly known as a digit.
