55-year-old Abdul Nasir was sentenced to 7 months imprisonment after brandishing a knife inside the MRT along the North-South Line.

The Fateful Day: July 30th

The incident unfolded on the fateful day of July 30th, 2023, as Abdul Nasir boarded a train at Sembawang MRT Station around 6:43 pm.

As the train approached Ang Mo Kio MRT Station at 7 pm, a loud noise disrupted the commuter crowd. Abdul Nasir had accidentally dropped a kitchen knife, which was wrapped in a newspaper, shocking the passengers along the way.

Abdul Nasir decided to retrieve the fallen knife and took it out from its newspaper wrapping. With a weapon in hand, he began to wave it around recklessly, even using it to scratch his foot, striking fear into the commuters in the vicinity.

Abdul Nasir’s alarming behavior escalated further. At 7:20 pm, he moved towards the train doors and began banging on them with the knife, all while shouting incoherently.

Finally, Abdul Nasir alighted at City Hall MRT Station to switch to the East-West Line. To the relief of those on board, he left without further incident when the doors opened at Kallang MRT Station. However, the ordeal was far from over for him.

Confrontation with the Law

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) wasted no time and arrested Abdul Nasir the very next day at 5:50 pm, seizing the kitchen knife as evidence. As the police delved into the details, Abdul Nasir confessed to the motives behind his bizarre actions.

It was revealed that Abdul Nasir had been embroiled in a dispute with his roommate over rental matters. Feeling provoked by his roommate’s actions, he had intended to use the kitchen knife on his roommate. This revelation shed light on the motive behind his seemingly irrational behavior.

A Desperate Plea

During his court appearance, Abdul Nasir represented himself and pleaded guilty under the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958. He asked the judge for leniency, citing the risk of losing his rental flat if he remained incarcerated for an extended period.

The judge presiding over the case acknowledged the severity of Abdul Nasir’s actions. He noted that the accused had instilled fear in the public with his knife-wielding antics and that he had indeed intended to use the weapon against his roommate. Consequently, the court sentenced Abdul Nasir to seven months’ imprisonment.

In a somewhat compassionate gesture, the judge also expressed willingness to arrange for a social worker to assist Abdul Nasir with his housing predicament upon his release from prison.
