Observations Made at 7th Month Dinners

First attended 7th month dinner in the late 60s. Recall the times when we youngsters would run from table to table. Lots of neighbours attended. Lots of fun.

From attending these dinners the past 20-25 years, these are my observations:

1 Despite the weather, even though dinners are at night, many of the aunties would dress as if going to a wedding dinner at a restaurant - jewelleries all out for everyone to see;

2 SS members will always be around. Some will walk around with all their tattoos showing. Will also want to be the star by attracting attention through various ways;

3 Chances of a dispute or one leading to a fight among own SS members always very high after all the drinking;

4 Those bidding big amounts hardly come alone;

5 Nightlife gals always in attendance. In the past, Malaysians. Nowadays, PRCs. Some very chio too. Hardly see any Viet gals except 7th month dinner in Joo Chiat;

6 In the course of bidding, sure to hear the following last 2 digits - 08, 18, 21, 24, 32, 369. Once awhile, 969;

7 Many RC porlumpars will be around to usher the GOH in. GOH always an MP. Sometimes minister MP. He/she will be asked to go on stage to present some of the bidded items, usually the super-high ones;

8 Sure to hear, 'cia tor, pian tor......' as auctioneer tries his best to galvanise the guests to bid;

9 Some families, baru book one table, will bring in more than 10 and try to tongpang another table.

Attended 4 so far for 2013. All 4 managed to have more than 100k when dinner ended. Looks like the economy beh phai leh. Witnessed 2 dinners having a bid of more than 50k from an individual for one item. One was a man in his 30s, one look sure pien mng and the other, another gentleman in his 60s, machiam a towkay.

All the dinner I attended very peaceful. Yes, there will always be a couple of chaps bid super large amounts, and they are not alone.

My table will always be the quietest. Towards the end our "lao da" will put in a token bid for some small item to "give face".

A few days later, he will buy Toto tickets for everyone!

I think 7th month dinner/auctions are tamer now. Restrictions have been placed on the duration and the sound volume.

Loanshark business is recession proof. Business is better when times are bad. Hawkers are making tons off us too. PAP working hard to get their votes, so PAP will help them earn more at our expense.
When times are bad, the masses flock to the ghosts for help.

"Strength' of organiser very important in maintaining 'peace' at these dinners especially so when various SS/triad groups attend. Past disputes may re-surface or escalate. Giving 'face' to the host will deter these unpleasant incidents.
