SOME 170 people were arrested Saturday morning in a massive 14-hour operation at Geylang, led by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The operation involved over 200 officers from the Home Team and kicked off Friday afternoon, said the Singapore Police Force in a statement. The people were caught for a host of criminal offences including illegal gambling activities, secret society involvement, possession of an offensive weapon, immigration offences, peddling contraband cigarettes, vice-related activities, trafficking, possession and consumption of controlled drugs. The operation also led to the capture of those who were wanted for other offences.

The arrests were made at various locations including hotels, at back lanes, lodging houses and also along the road, between Geylang Lorongs 4 to 24. SAC Ng Boon Gay, Director of CID, praised the officers involved for carrying out a well-coordinated and successful operation. He expressed his appreciation to all agencies for their strong support. He added, 'We will not tolerate such criminal activities. The agencies will continue to work together and conduct such regular enforcement actions. There is no safe haven for criminals on our streets. 'Investigations against those arrested are ongoing.

Bravo!!!!

The sex trade should be well regulated. MHA should regulate on who is working, health checks, standard of rooms (hygiene, how often clean, fresh sheets, etc). There should also be regulations on size of rooms, fire escapes. Those failing to meet these standards should be punished.

The rest of the activities like gambling, loan sharks, drug trafficking should be punished heavily. The thing about crime is that if it is left to fester it gets worse.

PAP is very strange, first they did not care.
then after all the complain, they activate their defence shield, i wonder what trigger them to act. It is strange, but i think it is for the better. We do not want the women to be exploit in singapore.

Commercial sex in those legal houses is not a problem, they're regulated with periodic checks.

It's those illegal activities that's a nut not easy to crack. And with FTs in the game, poodles are seriously in for a hard time.

If such social illness are left unchecked it's only a matter of time before the public feel the spilt over.

PAP is not strange, they are arrogant. They did care but careless. Too many complaints made them look ugly so they decide to be the good going after the bad.

When a woman decides to spreads her legs, to be exploited or not it's a choice she had to make, in singapore or anywhere else.

Well done police. Caught alot of Viet Cong during the operation. If left unregarded, they will continue to grow their triads. Already see them in larger numbers controlling the contraband cigarettes market and opening gambling tables and selling porn DVDs when nobody else dares to.

The way they run Lor 16 now is macham their own alley, with obstacles blocking the entrances and locals walking through will be stared at.

Prostitution is legalised and regulated in Singapore. There're licensed brothels and prostitutes in Geylang, Petain and Desker. However, both brothel owners and prostitutes are tempted to bypass law and regulation in various ways to cut expenses and inconvenience, and for more profits. Then of course, there're those pimps and prostitutes who're unable to get a license for various reasons.

I am very curious after i read from the papers, even Ah Neh (FT) knew there is a major operation going to happen.Where did they received the informations from? Which department leak the information? CPIB should move in and investigate

Street raiding operations are probably told in advance to licensed brothels, and the news filter (or leak) down the lines. Spot checks on licensed brothels are different and probably not told in advance. Anyway, police maintains a network of informants; they have to be told in order to avoid unintended arrests. These informants would then naturally tell some of their good friends to avoid targetted areas during operation periods.

Where did they received the informations from?

Should be "Where did they receive the information from?".

"Information" is a non countable noun. You do not add an "s" to make it plural.

To improve your knowledge of non countable nouns, I suggest you do this test : http://a4esl.org/q/j/ck/ch-countnouns.html
