Mass Murder

"This is what the Lord of hosts has to say: 'I will punish what Amalek did to Israel when he barred his way as he was coming up from Egypt. Go, now, attack Amalek, and deal with him and all that he has under the ban. Do not spare him, but kill men and women, children and infants, oxen and sheep, camels and asses.'" The God of Israel Approves of Incest

"Afterward Lot left Zoar because he was afraid of the people there, and he went to live in a cave in the mountains with his two daughters. One day the older daughter said to her sister, "There isn't a man anywhere in this entire area for us to marry. And our father will soon be too old to have children. Come, let's get him drunk with wine, and then we will sleep with him. That way we will preserve our family line through our father." So that night they got him drunk, and the older daughter went in and slept with her father. He was unaware of her lying down or getting up again. The next morning the older daughter said to her younger sister, "I slept with our father last night. Let's get him drunk with wine again tonight, and you go in and sleep with him. That way our family line will be preserved." So that night they got him drunk again, and the younger daughter went in and slept with him. As before, he was unaware of her lying down or getting up again."

"So both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father. When the older daughter gave birth to a son, she named him Moab. He became the ancestor of the nation now known as the Moabites. When the younger daughter gave birth to a son, she named him Ben-ammi. He became the ancestor of the nation now known as the Ammonites." (Genesis 19:30-38 NLT)

Aunt Helen’s Cat

Yesterday I was sitting in the Animal Hospital waiting to get my
dogs their annual shots and take care of an allergy problem.
I was deep in thought, thinking, “Oh no, this is going to cost
me so much. How will I ever save if these problems keep popping
up with two dogs with allergies, what an expense?”

I watched as a man got off the bus and came through the door.
Immediately I looked at this man and was quick to judge him as a
so-called looser. He saw my dogs, especially my large one and
said, “Boy I wouldn't want him.” He asked me if he would bite
and I said no.

This man put me off guard a bit and he started talking about
Aunt Helen as if everyone should know who she was. The man had
no teeth, it looked as if one of his eyes had cataracts; and
although, he was dressed in clean jeans and a T-shirt, it looked
as if he was dealt his share of troubles. I wondered if he lived
on the street.

I was so quick to form opinions of this poor gentleman.
He told me that Aunt Helen's cat needed to be fixed, and it was
going to cost him more than he had.

He asked if I knew if there was a payment plan there because he
could only afford a bit at a time. I looked around and saw
people looking away; no one wanted to deal with this man.

I watched as he went to the desk and was thankful that the vet
called me into the back so I didn't have to watch this man any
longer.

Today I can't stop thinking of this man.
Why did he put me off guard so much?
Why was I so quick to look down on this man?

This man was trying to help his Aunt Helen who had a cat that
needed care. This man, although he didn't have much, was trying
to work out a deal with the vet so he could get Aunt Helen's cat
looked after.

Today, I wished I could have helped this man look after Aunt
Helen's cat. Today, I wish I could have opened my eyes to the
kindness this man was showing yesterday. Today I have been
praying that the man got the help he needed to help another
person.

I don't know why this man touched me like he did, but I know I
will be changed because of it. My problems are small compared
to that of this man. He is twice the person I am because with
all he must have on his plate, he is still trying to help Aunt
Helen's Cat.

Dead Babies, False Prophets

I have cried until the tears no longer come. My heart is broken, my spirit poured out, as I see what has happened to my people. Little children and tiny babies are fainting and dying in the streets. "Mama, we want food," they cry, and then collapse in their mothers' arms. Their lives ebb away like the life of a warrior wounded in battle. In all the world has there ever been such sorrow? O daughter of Jerusalem, to what can I compare your anguish? O virgin daughter of Zion, how can I comfort you? For your wound is as deep as the sea. Who can heal you? Your "prophets" have said so many foolish things, false to the core. They did not try to hold you back from exile by pointing out your sins. Instead, they painted false pictures, filling you with false hope. (Lamentations 2:11-14 NLT)

Scriptures That Bother Me

Most people are bothered by those passages of Scripture they
do not understand, but the passages that bother me are those
that I do understand.

In The Sand

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert.
During some point of the journey, they had an argument and one
friend slapped the other one in the face.

The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything,
he wrote in the sand:

"TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE!"

They kept on walking, until they found an oasis where they
decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck
in the mire and started drowning, but his friend saved him.

After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone:

"TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE!"

The friend, who had slapped and saved his best friend, asked
him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write
on a stone, why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us, we should
write it down in sand where the winds of forgiveness can erase
it away, but when someone does something good for us, we must
engrave it in stone, where no wind can ever erase it."

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND
AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE.

The Waves

One moment you have shortage. . .
The next you have excess. . .

One day you have nothing to do. . .
The next you don't have time to get it all done. . .

One day the refrigerator is empty and you are hungry. . .
The next you have a half eaten meal in front of you and you are
stuffed. . .

One month you've got money to spare and you wonder what to buy
The next you've got a bounced check. . .

One moment you are full of energy and can't go to sleep. . .
The next you are drained and can't get up. . .

One day you are the center of attention. . .
The next you wonder if anyone knows you are alive. . .

It's the waves of life.
They carry us up and down and all around.

Money, friends, your body, your relationships, your job, and the
rest of the list, they all vary. They all go in waves.

It took me a while to really understand the statement,
"The Kingdom of Heaven is Within."

No commercial can show you that.

Commercials make you believe it's in the jazzy new car or the
big screen TV. Yes, those things can thrill you for a moment,
but it's only a wave. After a little while, the thrill is gone.

I have always recognized that if money and things brought happiness,
then all rich people with things would be happy.

It ain't so.

We easily see how poverty can cause unhappiness, but we are
deluded into believing that money solves all things.

Life is full of stuff. I wouldn't trade my life with anyone,
it's one of the most blessed that I know, but it's still full of
stuff. One thing after another, one challenge after another,
one situation after another, day by day, never-ending . . .

It's the waves and there is no stopping them from the outside.

You can only calm the inside, so that like a submarine, you ride
deep beneath the waves.

Though a storm is raging, you are at peace.

Most are tossed and turned by waves.
Some like the sub, ride deep beneath the daily storms in peace.
Some simply surf the waves and have a lot of fun.
Some drown.

You can't stop the waves; it's the nature of the ocean of life.

You can only choose which method you will use to handle them.

You can be tossed like most.
You can drown like many.
You can surf and have fun while you can, but even a surfer gets
tired and there's nowhere to sleep on a surfboard.

To ride comfortably beneath the waves requires a ship containing
breath that is not our own.

That ship. . .

. . . is not crowded.

Everything

"Help, I'm about to lose everything..." is a common statement
in many of our prayer requests.

I recently had a close college friend of mine die in the
hospital after a two week stay. I sat with him in his hospital
room in the wee hours of the morning. He was hooked up to a
ventilator, a heart assist machine and about half a dozen other
machines and tubes. For him during those moments, health was
everything.

I preached his eulogy.

I've learned that what we think is everything is not nearly
everything. It's not even the main thing. What we mean by
everything is perishable material stuff.

It is interesting what Jesus says in the book of Mark. He lists
eight things of the stuff that we consider to be everything.
1. House 2. Brothers 3. Sisters 4. Father 5. Mother 6. Wife
7. Children and 8. Lands

The only thing that Jesus didn't list was a chariot, in other
words, our car. When we talk about losing our job, it's not
really the job that we are lamenting; it's the stuff the job
buys that we are crying about. If most hit a big lottery
tomorrow, they'd leave their jobs by next Tuesday or maybe
they'd just call, ask for the boss and recommend a place where
he can go and get a deep tan.

Jesus said those who had left the things that he listed for the
sake of the gospel would receive in this present age a
hundredfold. But he added one little word that's interesting.

...with persecutions.

We struggle with the material things of life. We struggle with
houses, family and lands. These things Jesus said we would
receive with persecutions but that we would receive eternal
life in the age to come.

That's like telling me that for the next five minutes I would
be in pain but for the next 100 years I would be in absolute
bliss. We sometimes view the five minutes of pain as
"everything" when in spiritual truth, it is minor.

When you truly know what is important
you truly know what everything is.

And everything isn't the stuff.

(Mark 10:29-30 KJV) And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say
unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or
sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands,
for my sake, and the gospel's, {30} But he shall receive an
hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and
sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with
persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.

Beat Children of Mixed Marriages

About the same time I realized that some of the men of Judah had married women from Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. Even worse, half their children spoke in the language of Ashdod or some other people and could not speak the language of Judah at all. So I confronted them and called down curses on them. I beat some of them and pulled out their hair. I made them swear before God that they would not let their children intermarry with the pagan people of the land. "Wasn't this exactly what led King Solomon of Israel into sin?" I demanded. "There was no king from any nation who could compare to him, and God loved him and made him king over all Israel. But even he was led into sin by his foreign wives. How could you even think of committing this sinful deed and acting unfaithfully toward God by marrying foreign women? (Nehemiah 13:23-27 NLT)

Your Mission

Don't live today as if it were your last.
Live today as if it were your first.

Go into the day looking for things to see, to feel and to taste,
as if you're seeing, feeling and tasting them for the first time.

Make your life a mission, not an intermission.

Don't fear that the end is near

...fear more that you never began.
