This is how Huawei produced its 7nm Kirin 9000 chips via SMIC for its Mate 60 Pro:
- SMIC managed to tweak the simpler DUV chipmaking machines that were designed to produce more mature nodes,14nm and up, to produce the 7nm chips.
- China is free to buy DUV machines from the Dutch company ASML but curbed from buying more advanced EUV lithography machines.
- The tweak of the DUV machines made the process very inefficient, with a low yield rate at 20% to 50% per waffer, compared to the EUV machines at 90%.
- This DUV tweak process is inefficient and costs a lot more on a per chip basis.
- Huawei is currently selling its phone at a loss because of expensive chips inside.
- With this, China has made limited progress, but far from a breakthrough in the chip-making industry.
- How long Huawei or SMIC can absorb the loss is still a question provided they are unfairly heavily subsidized by the Chinese government.
- One thing for certain: the US will broaden hasher tech restrictions and plug any loopholes that Chinese firms are exploring.
- Netherlands has said it will impose export control to limit SMIC's access to more DUV machines.
US is going after Huawei now for using Hynix chips in that phone which it's not supposed to. Huawei gonna get fucked big this time.....

The surprise launch of the latest high-end smartphone from Chinese tech giant Huawei Technologies has triggered an international guessing game over what is inside it.

The company, which has been heavily targeted by U.S. government restrictions, began selling its latest Mate 60 Pro for 6,999 yuan ($964) online on Tuesday, raising eyebrows over its decision not to do any prior advertising and prompting widespread speculation over whether it could be 5G capable.

WHY DOES IT MATTER?

From 2019, the U.S. cut Huawei's access to chipmaking tools essential for producing the most advanced handset models, with the company only able to sell limited batches of 5G models using stockpiled chips.

The U.S. and some European countries have called Huawei a security risk, which the company denies.

The restrictions devastated the business of a company that once competed with Apple and Samsung to be the world's biggest handset maker, with its consumer business peaking at 483 billion yuan in 2020 before plunging almost by half a year later.

But Huawei has repeatedly said it is fighting back and research firms told Reuters in July they believed it was plotting a return to the 5G smartphone industry by the end of this year, using its own advances in semiconductor design tools along with chipmaking from China's Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co (SMIC).

If Huawei and China were capable of producing their own 5G chips, it would mark a significant advancement in their capabilities and a blow to U.S. efforts to limit its progress.

IS THE MATE PRO 60 A 5G PHONE?

Huawei has kept mum, only saying that the smartphone is the "most powerful Mate model ever".

Buyers of the phone have been posting tear-down videos and sharing speed tests on social media that suggest the Mate 60 Pro is capable of download speeds exceeding those of top line 5G phones, suggesting it is in a similar playing field.

The phone contains a new Kirin 9000s processor from Huawei's HiSilicon chip division, which appears to use advanced technology from SMIC, according to Dan Hutcheson, an analyst with TechInsights.

If it uses 7 nm or 5nm processes, production would likely be a very expensive process, Hutcheson said.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE REACTION?

The release sent Chinese social media users and state media into a frenzy, while tear-down firms around the world have raced to get their hands on the phone to see what is inside.

An initial batch of the phone quickly sold out online. Huawei's flagship store in the city of Shenzhen and its website say new stocks will only arrive at the earliest by mid-September.

The state-backed tabloid Global Times was triumphant, noting in one of several editorials that the phone had launched as U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo was visiting, and calling it proof the U.S. had failed with its "extreme crackdown on China".

State media did not cite any sources or evidence for their assertions.

Social media users were also jubilant, with Huawei searches trending for several days on the Weibo messaging platform and likening it to the mythological Monkey King escaping from under a mountain.

WHAT NEXT?

Several Huawei staff said the phone's launch had taken them by surprise, with its official release initially scheduled for Sept. 12.

Nicole Peng, senior VP of Mobility at Canalys, has said it would be crucial for Huawei to provide clarification on its technology, given the high level of market interest.

iPhones and Android phones using 4nm chips. While Huawei has a current breakthrough with their 7nm Kirin chips, it is still subjective whether SMIC or Huawei made those 7nm Kirin chips, or Huawei dipped into its limited stockpile. In any case, Huawei's phones aren't allowed to have any Google apps. So, their phones can only be sold within China. Nobody wants a phone without Google.

It's more than just shitty smartphones. Microchips also can be used for the military... and the Tiong-CCP military has been stirring shit around the world, from Taiwan to SE Asia, to Cuba and the Middle East.

And if you have followed the Hunter Biden scandal, you know China was involved with Ukraine.

They should put a naval blockade in the South China Sea and a no-fly zone along the China coastline. Break off all diplomatic relationships with the PRC, and start hunting for Tiong spies in western countries. America should bring back internment camps... it's wartime after all.

Not really, huawei will find alternative route but still lagging behind US, through their talented pool of russian engineers. SMIC also got a top man from foxconn.

That top man from Foxconn is back in Taiwan. Many of his engineers were poached from TSMC. They can't stand the corruption in China because CCPee promises them the skies but actually gave them little resources to work with when he's there. If you read Chinese there's plenty of info on YouTube

China should forget about microchips and focus on growing more food... do that or starve. You can't eat microchips.

After launch of iPhone 15 recently, server and web site has been overloaded resulted in crashed but they are back online to sell again. The consumer is happy again cos they can get their iPhone 15.

But those Huawei supporter, it's another story. They can't get it. On the store front, they had been asked to purchase online. On the web, there's no where user or consumers can order in china. I don't know how shoppee and lazada get their hands on it whereas China consumer can't get the physical hp itself.

Huawei can claim that they have break through, they even claim that they can make EUV machinery. It's true and they also claim that they can build factory manufacturing EUV machinery. The chinese are just fucking boastful and full of hot air.

Reason the Chinese economy is doing so bad is because , for the past 40 years. They or China has not been creating real value in their works. As a result once the foreign company move out, the economic takes a serious hit. People can't find meaningful job and consumer just don't spend anymore. The real estate start to wobble and all the big developer took a hit and CCP refused to let it go off line. Their real estate and infrastructure development are all debt fueled. There's no basis for their demand for it. The reason they have not been adding value to their products is that 100% of their important product has all been subsidised by the govt. Means that business will make money not because their product is good but they can get subsidy out of govt product.

The Huawei Mate 60 phones were only produced in limited quantities, because the DUV/EUV restrictions resulted in very little yield. It was not supposed to sell well, it was a political vanity project to showcase that China had 'defied' the sanctions.

Next year, such a similar political vanity project will be near impossible. Low IQ Tiong fanboys should get up to speed with the ongoings of the tech world, instead of fantasizing about the 'rise of China' or '21st century = China's century'.

Chinese chip makers can import critical ASML tools until 2024, as new Netherlands rules restrict access to DUV systems

The Chicoms can put on business suits and talk trade all they want, at its very core China is still a communist country with a centrally planned economy.

Other chipmaking countries may run into trouble making chips too. Chinkland has banned the sale of germanium and gallium. Non-chink chip makers can get a new supplier before their stockpiles run out?
