Facebook Anonymity Real or Unreal

James Gomez has a little chit chat with me when he was back in town. As usual, we talk about politics and almost everything under the sun.

One interesting thing he mentioned was about anonymity in Facebook. Facebook, which is supposedly to be a internet networking tool, has ironically turned into a tool for people who would like to stay anonymous but yet, getting involved in the political discussion and networking process.

Interestingly, there are people who are wary of personalities being impersonated. There used to be two Goh Meng Seng in Facebook, one of them obviously an impersonation of me. Even anonymous friends there are wary whether this only surviving Goh Meng Seng in Facebook is the real McCoy..i.e. me. One friend by the name Dexter actually wanted me to prove myself that I am the real GMS.

Well, the worry is not unwarranted. LKY has been impersonated in Facebook. It is a very unique situation in Singapore whereby impersonation is a norm as well as anonymity. But I think these people may be very helpful in terms of dissemination of information during the GE via their own network, be it virtual or real.

Its a good point.

People have long associated FB with real people as it was never designed as a forum but a closed networking tool amongst friends and colleagues. However some have moved to use the wall and discussion group with the vast majority still using real identities. People therefore naturally assume that person behind the name is indeed the real mccoy.

Prudent ones tend to register their real names to avoid it being used but thereafter remain dormant. The same applies to Linkedin and similar vehicles where real names are expected.

I am sure, in time, FB forums and the wall will destroy the central purpose of FB and people will begin using nicks again like any other forum.

In the professional workplace, people have started trimming down their details or completely removing such information are purloined on a regular basis to hunt for job. I know professional colleagues who have removed their details form FB, Linkedin and other similar sites.

They can also disseminate false information.

Its not confined to Singapore. The problem is worldwide and growing.
