We are all under pressure from Jose Mourinho - Chelsea's Andre Villas-Boas wary of Real Madrid coach

Having worked under the Portuguese manager, the current Blues boss - who has only been at Stamford Bridge since the summer - is worried about his return to English football

Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid - André Villas-Boas - Chelsea
Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has sent out a warning to all top Premier Leaguemanagers that their jobs are constantly under threat from Real Madrid head coach Jose Mourinho.

The Santiago Bernabeu boss has been linked with a move back to Stamford Bridge today and the 49-year-old has always said he would welcome a return to English football in the future.

Villas-Boas worked under Mourinho during his spell at the west London club but highlighted that he was still the top dog at Chelsea and dismissed any immediate return of the ‘Special One’.

“At the moment, there is not a vacancy at this club – that is the most important thing. And the Real Madrid manager is not available at the moment,” he insisted to reporters on Friday.

“He's tied to the best club in the world. The only thing I can say is that I have lived Jose's availability when we were out of Chelsea and we know and I know how many clubs came knocking on our doors.

“So, a manager of Jose's dimension and the number one in the world will always be an attractive target for whatever club.”

Villas-Boas was keen to add that Mourinho’s intent on returning to English football someday puts pressure on managers at all the biggest top flight clubs.

The 34-year-old coach added: “Because he's a manager that makes himself available to return to his beloved England will for sure capture the interests of City, United and Chelsea and Tottenham and Liverpool and Arsenal, and so on and so forth.

“So, in that sense, we are all under pressure, from Mancini to Ferguson to me to Dalglish to Harry Redknapp and so on.”

Premier League squads revealed

Barclays Premier League clubs have submitted their squads for the remainder of the campaign.

A club's squad can contain no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the Home Grown Player criteria and the remainder of the squad, up to a total of 25 players, must be Home Grown.

The Premier League say: "A Home Grown Player means a player who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the Season during which he turns 21)."

Under-21 players, who were born on or after January 1 in 1990, are eligible over the 25-player limit which explains why the likes of David de Gea, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Kyle Walker aren't named.

Harry Redknapp: Becks on the Brain

20i8cc6.jpg

Harry Redknapp has stated that he spent more time thinking about David Beckham than he did dealing with his Monaco bank account.

Speaking to jurors about a $100,000 cash transfer made in 2003 from Monaco to ex-Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric's US account, Redknapp said: 'We were playing Manchester United at Old Trafford, a massive game for Portsmouth. I was thinking about who was marking David Beckham when I was signing that form.'

The Tottenham boss managed to fit a couple of gags into his testimony including recalling his defence of 21-year-old Peter Crouch in 2001, when he told Milan Mandaric 'He's a good investment, he is improving, he's getting stronger, he's getting taller.'

He also rubbished the suggestion he is a brilliant businessman and claimed he has a history of poor investments stating: 'I'm a fantastic football manager. I'm not a hard-headed businessman.

However, Redknapp's mood turned sour when he interrupted giving his evidence to to tell detective David Manley: 'Mr Manley, will you stop staring at me. I know you are trying to cause me a problem.'

The case continues.

AVB: I can't be dictatorial

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas admits his comparative inexperience and young age mean he cannot run a club as a dictatorship.

Questions have been asked of the 34-year-old, with the Blues out of the Premier League title race and seemingly in a fight for a place in the top four.

Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard are both only slightly younger than Villas-Boas and it has been suggested the Portuguese may not command the full respect of Chelsea's dressing room.

The former Porto boss also lacks a professional playing career and as a consequence he knows he will not be able to boss around members of his squad.

"Because of my age and my lack of a professional playing background, I could never be dictatorial," Villas-Boas told The Technician, UEFA's official publication for coaches.

"I therefore let the players have a certain amount of input into decisions regarding the way we play and how the team is run.

"Also, when we talk about the well-being of a group, I encourage the players to participate in the decisions affecting their professional life.

"For example, at Porto I would discuss with the players the starting time of the training or the need for rest days.

"I try to be an open-minded leader and to respect people.

"You must build a two-way relationship, even over any decision-making about arrangements or actions in the game.

"Naturally, as the coach I make the final decisions, though, and if I have to upset a couple of people, then so be it."

Villas-Boas has also revealed the pressure he feels when decided to leave players out of his team, which could refer to the tough calls over the selection of £50million man Fernando Torres.

"I suffer most when everyone is available and I have to select the line-up after a week when everyone has given total commitment," he said.

"It is a basic part of the manager's job, but when you have to leave players out for the sake of the team, it is tough.

"Nothing you can say to them can convince them that they haven't done something wrong."

Manchester United's triumphant 1967-68 European Cup campaign resonates within the history of football on these shores not only because it marked the first time an English team had won the continent's premier club competition, but also because it signified the repayment, at least in part, of a 10-year debt United and their manager Matt Busby felt they owed to the memory of an earlier generation of players.
For Manchester United after the Munich Disaster of February 1958, winning the European Cup had become an emotional imperative. When eight of Busby's 'Babes' lost their lives on that snowy Bavarian runway they were returning home from a successful quarter-final in what was still an embryonic competition. In 1956 Busby had defied a reactionary and parochial Football League to take United into Europe, believing that his young players would benefit from the experience.

“United‘s participation was not in the best interests of the League,” insisted that venerable body. But the Scot was not a man to be brow-beaten. "Prestige alone demanded that the continental challenge should be met, not avoided," he argued, and United duly pioneered English clubs' involvement on the European stage. Then tragedy struck.

After the crash Busby himself hovered close to death for weeks. But there was profound emotional as well as physical trauma: Munich left him grief-stricken and questioning whether he'd been right to pursue his European vision.

"Munich left Busby grief-stricken and questioning whether he had been right to pursue his European vision"

He nevertheless decided that the most fitting tribute in football terms to those who had perished would be to build another team that could bring the European Cup to Old Trafford. Munich survivors Bill Foulkes and Bobby Charlton would help him fulfil that dream.

Busby's first opportunity came in 1965-66 after United had won the previous season's First Division title, but Partizan Belgrade beat them 2-1 on aggregate in the semi-final.

English champions again in 1966-67, they embarked on their next European adventure in September 1967 with a comfortable 4-0 home win over Hibernians of Malta, David Sadler and Denis Law netting a brace apiece. A goalless draw in the away leg saw United through to face Sarajevo in the second round, where they would now be Britain's sole representatives following holders Celtic's 3-2 aggregate defeat by Dinamo Kiev. The Red Devils' trip to Bosnia to face the champions of the then Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia yielded another goalless draw, and in the second leg John Aston and George Best were on target in a 2-0 United victory.

That set up a quarter-final against Polish champions Gornik Zabrze. At Old Trafford Stefan Florenski put through his own goal on the hour mark before 18-year-old Brian Kidd, in his debut season in United’s first team, added a priceless second in the last minute. The second leg was played in an intimidating atmosphere at the Stadion Slaski in Silesia in front of 105,000 fans. Prolific striker Wlodek Lubanski scored the only goal in the 70th minute, but it proved too little too late for the Poles and United were through to the semi-final.

Their opponents would be Real Madrid, who back in 1957 had ended United's first European Cup campaign at the semi-final stage.

Eleven years later in the first leg at Old Trafford, a goal by Best after 36 minutes gave Busby's side a slender lead to take to Spain. But by half-time at the Bernabeu, United found themselves 3-1 down and being emphatically outplayed by the six-times winners of the tournament.

Jose Martinez Sanchez - aka Pirri - opened the scoring after 32 minutes to put Madrid level overall. Nine minutes later Francisco Gento doubled Real's lead on the night, and although Ignacio Zoco's own goal gave United hope a minute before the break, there was still time in the first half for Amancio Amaro to restore the Spaniards' two-goal lead.

The hosts were rampant, their fans raucous - and United were reeling. Busby boldly opted to gamble on all-out attack and sent centre-back Sadler up to join the forwards. It paid off handsomely when Sadler evened up the tie on 73 minutes. Five minutes later Best produced a dazzling run to the right-hand by-line before sending in a cross for the other centre-back, Foulkes, to turn into the net. United had secured a stunning 4-3 aggregate victory.

The final was at Wembley on May 29 against Benfica. The Portuguese champions' 1961 triumph against Barcelona had broken Real Madrid's stranglehold on the cup, and they retained the trophy in 1962 against Real before losing the 1963 final to AC Milan (also at Wembley) and finishing as runners-up again in 1965, this time to Inter. It was a formidable pedigree, underlined by their route to the 1968 final which had included home and away victories over Juventus in the semi-final.

Laying the ghosts | Charlton holds European Cup

In Eusebio the Lisbon Eagles boasted one of Europe’s most fearsome strikers and the tournament's leading scorer that season. United on the other hand were without their cavalier inside-forward Law, hospitalised with a knee injury.

Charlton put United ahead with a rare headed goal eight minutes into the second half, but Jaime Graca equalised with 15 minutes to go. There were just seconds remaining of normal time when Eusebio - who'd earlier left United's crossbar shuddering from an explosive shot - burst clear of the defence with the goal at his mercy. He just needed to steer the ball past Alex Stepney into the corner and United were beaten. But he elected to hit it as hard as he could, Stepney got his fingertips to it in a remarkable reflex save and extra-time now beckoned.

"When Bobby took the Cup it cleansed me"
-
Matt Busby

On a hot and humid evening United looked exhausted, but Busby rallied them before the action resumed. "If you pass the ball to each other you'll beat them," he told his players. And Benfica were tired too - something Best exploited with relish three minutes into the extra period when he set off on a mesmerising 25-yard dribble. He beat one defender, then another, before coolly side-stepping goalkeeper Jose Henrique and guiding the ball into the net.

The goal lifted United and suddenly Benfica were trying to stem an inexorable tide. The weariness dropped away from United limbs as Kidd celebrated his 19th birthday by heading home number three, before setting up a glorious fourth for captain Charlton.

When the final whistle blew, Charlton was crying unashamedly; Busby was also in tears as he joined his triumphant team on the pitch. Some of the agony of Munich had been assuaged.

The manager later revealed: "When Bobby took the Cup it cleansed me. It eased the pain of the guilt of going into Europe. It was my justification."

Marcello Lippi says Chelsea's Andre-Villas Boas is worried about facing Napoli in the Champions League

The World Cup-winning coach says that Villas-Boas is not too confident for the upcoming Champions League tie, while hailing Napoli's growth in the last few years

Former Juventus and Italy coach Marcello Lippi has indicated that Andre Villas-Boas is concerned about Chelsea's Champions League round of 16 tie against Napoli.

The Blues secured qualification for the knockout stages only in the last round of matches thanks to a home 3-0 victory against Valencia as they risked dropping to the Europa League.

Chelsea will now have to lock horns with Napoli, who have been in stunning form in the Champions League, having survived the so-called 'Group of Death'.

"You have to be proud of Napoli, who grow year after year," Lippi told Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli. "Half of Europe fears this club.

"I recently ran into Villas-Boas and I saw that he is worried."

Chelsea travel to Napoli on February 21, with the return leg scheduled for March 14 at Stamford Bridge.

We expect top referees in top games - Andre Villas-Boas hits out at Howard Webb's role in Manchester United comeback

The Chelsea manager was furious at the award of United's second spot-kick but paid tribute to the resilience of the champions

By Wayne Veysey at Stamford Bridge

Andre Villas-Boas suggested Howard Webb was not a top referee after Manchester United’s stirring comeback at Chelsea was kick-started by two penalties awarded by the official.

Villas-Boas believed Webb was compensating for decisions that went against United in the first half as he pointed to the spot twice in three minutes after Chelsea had taken a 3-0 lead.
Wayne Rooney emphatically netted both penalties, the second of which particularly drew the ire of the Chelsea manager.

“We expect in top games top refs, and it has not been happening for us,” said Villas-Boas in his post-match press conference. “It didn’t happen for us at Old Trafford with two off-side goals and maybe with today’s dubious decision, which, in the end, shaped the running of the game.

“The biggest disappointment is the way it happened. In both games they [referees] have had a direct influence on the result and today a dubious decision helped stimulate United to 3-3. “I don’t know if he [Webb] is compensating for something in the first half. The second one is a wrong decision. [Danny] Welbeck’s legs got caught with Ivanovic. You can’t give a penalty for that, I’m sure. I don’t know if Howard Webb has the correct angle to make that decision.”

Nevertheless, Villas-Boas paid tribute to United’s resilience in mounting a comeback from three goals behind.

“The 3-3 is almost a normal score for them,” he said. “Their players never give up. It is not the result they would have wanted, for sure, but the draw, coming back from 3-0, is important. “They made attacking substitutions to try and get something out of the game. In the end the opponent has nothing to lose. So they attack. Situations were occurring, mainly on the counter-attack, and we maybe lost control of the game.

“We could have found solutions to score one more. We had a big chance to go 4-3 but [David] De Gea made a great save.” Villas-Boas refused to condemn the Chelsea supporters for jeering and baiting Rio Ferdinand, brother of Anton Ferdinand, throughout the game.

“This is a normal situation in the Premiership,” he said. “You don’t expect opposition fans to praise the other players.” The Chelsea manager also revealed that John Terry’s knee injury will keep him out of the trip to Everton next Saturday.

Leeds United are stepping up their hunt for a new manager after having sacked Simon Grayson on Wednesday.

Grayson was given the boot following the 4-1 defeat Leeds suffered at home against Birmingham, which was the fifth loss in seven games for the Yorkshire team.

Opinion has been divided amongst the Leeds fans regarding the wisdom of the sacking Grayson when the transfer window has just shut and with no replacement lined up, but Leeds legend Peter Lorimer has stated a fresh start is exactly what is needed for the club.

Speaking about Grayson, Lorimer said: 'The truth is that he hadn’t moved forward from last season. Our results and performances in the main have been poorer than they were during our first year in the Championship and there’s been no real sign of things changing or improving.'

'But bringing a new manager in is a chance to make a go of a campaign which isn’t over yet. We’re very close to the play-offs and by no stretch of the imagination is the situation irretrievable.'

Former QPR boss Neil Warnock, Huddersfield's Lee Clark and MK Dons manager Karl Robinson have already been linked with the job, but the Leeds Official Website has they have made no approaches to replace Grayson as of yet.

A number of Leeds old boys have been given an outside shout of becoming the next manager of the whites, with Lucas Radabe at 33/1 and Gary McCallister at 50/1.

Feed the Ox and He Will Score

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has heaped praise upon up and coming star Alex Oxdale-Chamberlain following the eighteen-year-olds central role in the Gunners 7-1 victory over Blackburn on Saturday.

Oxdale-Chamberlain scored either side of the half time break in a performance which prompted his manager to compare him with Wayne Rooney’s early performances in the Premiership and to those of former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas.

'I feel that is always a brand of top players,' said Wenger. 'They just play. When you saw Rooney start he played like it was natural; the same with Fabregas. They are happy on the football pitch and comfortable.'

'I feel Oxlade-Chamberlain could play central midfield and he could play second striker because he has something that is exceptional, he has a short back-lift and so when he has a shot on goal it's difficult to block.'

'He can go right and left and he is the kind of guy who feels comfortable on the football pitch, not nervous.'

After becoming one of Arsenal's most important players in such a short period of time, Oxdale-Chamberlain has been touted by some to feature in England's senior Euro 2012 squad, but for now he insists he is only concerntrating on keeping his place in the Arsenal starting line-up.

'It would be very nice,' Oxdale-Chamberlain said in response to the suggestion of him making the England team. 'But I must keep my feet on the ground.'

'I have belief in myself and my own ability. I'll keep working hard then I hope the rest will come. I'm in the England Under-21 squad and playing for Arsenal, I'll concentrate on that.'

‘Ever since I was punished they put me with the youngsters’ - Nicolas Anelka describes final days at Chelsea

The Frenchman was forced to train with the youth team, use separate changing rooms from the first-team players and park his car with the reserves after refusing new contract

By Joel Lamy

Nicolas Anelka
has described the manner in which he was frozen out at Chelsea after refusing to sign a new contract.
The Frenchman was forced to train with the youth squad and kept away from the rest of the first team before eventually moving to Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua in January.

The 32-year-old, who moved from Bolton for £15 million in January 2008, had been a key man for the Blues having finished as the Premier League top scorer with 19 goals as they did the double under Carlo Ancelotti in 2008-09.

Anelka had been linked with a move to Ancelotti’s new team PSG, a move he denies was a possibility, but he talked about the end of his time at Chelsea and the treatment which he was subjected to by Andre Villas-Boas.

"Ever since I was punished they put me with the youngsters,” he told the Sun.

"I've got all the kit and equipment that professionals have but they put me in a separate changing room — that's football for you.

"One day, you can be there scoring goals and doing all you have to do for your club but the day you leave there is no pity.

"That's why the day you do decide to leave you have to do what you have to do and have no sadness either, because there are no friends in football.

"That's the truth. It's sad to say but that's the truth. It's a collective sport but it's also very individual.

"It's true that I could have had a better career but I know I've succeeded and I'm proud of that when I go back to France, back to the suburbs I came from, the guys there are proud of me.

"They know I never gave up. I took plenty of knocks but I'm still here."

Anelka also described his treatment by the French media and said he had hoped that his goal against the Republic of Ireland in the 2010 World Cup qualifier might have endeared him more to journalists from his home country.

"After all the ups and downs I've had with the France team I had the impression that I had done something good for my country for once - something positive. I was pleased with myself,” he said.

"But, no — it wasn't enough. The press didn't want it to be me and that hurt. It really hurt. After that I thought 'OK, World Cup or no World Cup, I couldn't care less'.

"That will stay with me for the rest of my life. When you know you've done your duty and accomplished your task and yet they come along and stick a knife in your back, well, frankly, that hurt a great deal."

Roman Abramovich holds second meeting with Andre Villas-Boas and tells him to improve Chelsea’s results - report

The club owner was a spectator at the team’s Cobham training ground where he met with directors and coaches to find out why the Blues are struggling this season

Feb 8, 2012 8:45:00 AM

166625hp2.jpg
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has held a second meeting with manager Andre Villas-Boas in just four days as he tries to figure out why the club have struggled this season.

According to the Daily Mail, Abramovich has told his Portuguese boss to sort out results after the Blues blew a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Manchester United, a result which left them struggling to hold on to fourth place in the Premier League.

The Blues currently trail leaders Manchester City by 14 points, a damning gap considering their pedigree as title contenders in every year since the Russian bought the club.

It is also reported that the Russian brought in director of football Michael Emenalo for talks in a further bid to explain the team’s recent failings.

Villas-Boas has been quoted as saying he does not mind the owner coming down to the training pitch, saying: “Roman is always very interested in the running of events and it was good for the team to feel his presence.

“We touched a little bit, of course, on next year’s project but mainly on Sunday’s game.

“Roman is a very educated person to the cause of Chelsea Football Club and his aura is always present.”

It is alleged that Abramovich asked Villas-Boas for his team’s tactics the day before the United match and his presence at the Cobham training pitch has been taken as a sign that the manager could be under pressure with any bid for a title challenge seemingly at an end.

By Wayne Veysey at Southwark Crown Court

Harry Redknapp has been cleared on all counts of tax evasion charges by a jury at Southwark Crown Court.

The jury of eight men and four women returned a unanimous 'not guilty' judgement following five-and-a-half hours of deliberations.

Redknapp's co-accused Milan Mandaric was also cleared of two counts of cheating the public revenue.

The charges for both men stemmed from their time as manager and owner of Portsmouth respectively.

Wayne Veysey on Twitter: "Very brief statement by Mandaric. With his daughter stood next to him he said justice was done."
12:20
"After reading out his six paragraph statement, Mandaric headed away from the chill of the court steps. We still await Redknapp snr."
12:30
"Huge number of reporters & cameramen jostling for position on court steps. Scores of punters have also paused to wait for Redknapp arrival."
12:45
"Harry, Jamie & Kevin Bond set to head back home as Spurs are not training today. Back in tomorrow."

Later, Redknapp took to the court steps to thank those who had supported him throughout a case he described as "a nightmare" and "absolutely horrendous".

He said: "It really has been a nightmare. It's been five years and this is a case that should never have come to court. It was a unanimous decision so there was no case to answer.

"I'm pleased we can go home and get on with our lives."

When the jury forewoman had delivered the verdict at 11:35am on the 13th day of the trial Redknapp smiled, puffed out his cheeks in relief and looked over to his son Jamie Redknapp in the public gallery.

The Spurs manager was embraced by Mandaric, who was sat alongside him in the dock, and the Serbian millionaire drew Redknapp's head into his shoulder.

Redknapp junior clasped his hands together in relief whilst Kevin Bond, his father's long-time friend and No2 on the Spurs coaching staff, smiled in the public gallery.

There were also smiles from a posse of Spurs officials, including directors Darren Eales and Donna Cullen, and League Managers' Association chief executive Richard Bevan, who have supported Redknapp throughout the majority of the trial.

Tottenham later released a statement expressing their delight with the verdict.

"Everyone at the club is delighted for Harry and his family," it read.

"This has been hanging over him for four years and the last two weeks have been particularly difficult. We are pleased to see this resolved and we all look forward to the rest of the season."

Former Pompey owner Mandaric also spoke outside the court, insisting the charges should never have been brought.

"I always believed in British justice system," he said.

"To suggest I would cheat the tax man is highly offensive to me, my family, associates and friends.

"I'm happy that my good name and reputation have been upheld. I never doubted the truth would prevail, nor the fact that the British justice system would come to the right conclusion.

"I'm delighted I have been cleared of totally unfounded allegations. It is clear they should never have been brought to the court."
