Manchester City's Mario Balotelli has been charged by the FA with violent conduct and faces a four-game ban after his stamp on Tottenham midfielder Scott Parker.

The second-half substitute went on to score the winning penalty in the 3-2 victory for the home side at the Etihad Stadium.

The ban could see the Italian striker miss Wednesday's Carling Cup semi-final second leg at Anfield, along with Premier League games against Aston Villa, Everton and Fulham.

Balotelli could appeal the decision, but could also see the ban extended if the FA panel deems it a frivolous move.

The FA has now given Balotelli until 6pm on Wednesday to respond to the charge.Meanwhile, Joleon Lescott has escaped any punishment for his clash with Tottenham defender Younes Kaboul earlier in the game.

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith slams Arsene Wenger's transfer policy: Panic buys could cost the club a Champions League place

The former Gunner has criticised the Frenchman for failing to sign Chelsea new boy Gary Cahill, and questioned the purchases of Per Mertesacker, Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun

Jan 24, 2012 9:33:00 PM

By Shane Farrington

160819hp2.jpg
Alan Smith believes Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger’s poor recent purchases could end up costing them a top-four finish, and believes the club should have closed a deal for Gary Cahill when they had the chance.

The Gunners bid for Cahill, now at Chelsea, last summer when he was still at Bolton, but saw their offer rejected and subsequently brought in Germany international Per Mertesacker.
However, Smith thinks Wenger would have been better off meeting Bolton’s asking price instead of switching their attentions to Mertesacker.

“With the Cahill thing, we don’t know exactly how it happened but we do know Arsenal made a bid which Bolton rejected, so why not go a bit higher, pay the asking price and get the player?” Smith told talkSPORT.

“Now he’s gone to Chelsea and he’s a good signing for them, and he would have been a good one for Arsenal, and better than Per Mertesacker, in my opinion.

“Cahill knows the league, he’s an England player and he could be an England player for the next few years and would have had a good re-sale value even at 30.

“Sometimes Wenger thinks clubs are asking too much and that he wouldn’t get a return. It’s almost like it’s his money and he’s careful how he spends it.

“Then there is the wages of course, and Arsenal don’t pay £150,000 a week, but Cahill wouldn’t have wanted that and I think they could have got him.”

The 49-year-old also questioned the last minute deals which saw Mikel Arteta and Yossi Benayoun arrive alongside Mertesacker shortly before the transfer window shut.

He added: “Once it became clear Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri were both going, that’s when you’re looking for the manager to make adequate replacements, to get some quality in and not have to do something at the last minute as he ended up doing.

“They did seem like panic buys at the 11th hour. Arteta is 29 with an injury record, something Wenger looks at; Benayoun is 31 and won’t make a huge difference to the first XI at the Emirates; Mertesacker has 80 caps for his country but doesn’t look a player who has that.

“Ask him to run and he looks slow and it’s worrying . He’s a good solid character, but that’s not always enough.

“Getting into the top four this season would arguably be Wenger’s greatest achievement. They’ve got players coming back [from injury] who will make a difference, but if they keep defending like they are at the moment they will be going nowhere.”

Balotelli: Dancing on Eyes

154810863854b5cf76683e303bec7a36bf871963.jpg

Mario Balotelli's agent has spoken out of his belief that the Italian striker could be forced to quit English football because of the treatment he has received from the FA and Premiership referees.

'I think he feels persecuted, he cannot go on like that,' agent Mino Raiola told BBC Radio 5 Live.

'We had a very clear image of his career at the beginning and I have told the press openly Mario will have to stay at Manchester City for at least three or four years, helping the club on this important project and grow as a man and a player.'

'Obviously if he's being banned every three or four games for one reason or another we cannot go on like that and there needs to be an end to that.'

'So if that's the case and English referees and the English FA would like Mario to go out of England then we would take that seriously in consideration, even if that's not and was not our intention.'

Raiola’s comments come in response to the four match ban handed out to Balotelli by the FA for stamping on Scott Parkers head during City’s 3-2 win over Tottenham last Sunday.

Speaking about the alledged stamp Raiola insisted that it was not deliberate and that TV replays prove that there was no ill intent from the 27-year-old.

'He didn't do anything on purpose, he was clearly pushed and was out of balance and put down his feet," said Raiola. 'That's also clear in the slow-motion replays.'

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger calls for change in Premier League loan rules

The Gunners boss believes players over the age of 21 should not be allowed to temporarily switch between clubs, despite the arrival of Yossi Benayoun on a short-term deal

Jan 26, 2012 9:56:00 AM

By James McManus

161067hp2.jpg
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has called for a change in the Premier League loan rules, insisting there should be a clamp down on the short-term switches of established players.

North London rivals Tottenham are currently enjoying the success of Emmanuel Adebayor's loan move from Manchester City, with the 27-year-old's nine goals so far this season helping the club to third place in the table.

The Togolese striker was not able to feature against his parent club in Sunday's 3-2 defeat, a rule Wenger believes should be changed, but the Frenchman also insists that player's over the age of 21 should not be allowed to go out on loan.

“Personally, I would not ban players on loan from playing against their own clubs,” Wenger told reporters. “What I would like to see in the Premier League is that you are not allowed to loan players over the age of 21. "At the moment it is an opportunity for some clubs to reinforce other teams, without losing ownership of the player.

“For example, if a big club sends a big player to another club in the Premier League on loan, they only have benefits.
“That player cannot face his own club, yet he could win games against their rivals. “Therefore, I think it would be better if players over 21 didn’t go on loan in the top league.”

Wenger opted for a loan deal for Chelsea midfielder Yossi Benayoun in the summer transfer window, with the 31-year-old one of a number of deadline day arrivals, yet the 62-year-old defended the move.

“It’s true that I haven’t done that often," he continued. “But we were on the last day of the transfer window. We knew that Jack Wilshere would need surgery. “So we were short in midfield at that point and to find two players so late was nearly impossible* for us without using a loan. “At that time, the most important thing was just to sign him.”

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas: I suffer every time I leave players out of the team

Stamford Bridge boss reveals his frustrations at leaving players out despite their efforts and says he is unable to be a 'dictator' due to his age and lack of playing experience

Andre Villas-Boas has claimed that everytime he leaves players out his Chelsea line-up, he is forced to "suffer".

Stamford Bridge favourite Frank lampard and record signing Fernando Torres have both seen themselves relegated to the substitutes bench for much of the season and Villas-Boas insists it is not an easy decision.

The Blues boss told Uefa's
The Technician: “I suffer most as a coach when everyone is available and I have to select the line-up at the end of a week when everyone has given their total commitment.
“It is a basic part of the manager’s job, but when you have to leave players out for the sake of the team, it is tough.

"Nothing you can say to them can convince them they haven’t done something wrong. “This selection process, being ruthless, takes the human element out of you, and it is something that makes you sensitive to players’ feelings."

Villas-Boas also claims that his age can work for and against him in the high-pressure world of football management. The Portuguese suggests that he cannot command his squad as much due to his youth and lack of playing experience but believes he is more able to relate to his squad and can work with them easier.

"You are expected to be successful instantly, and the process and the circumstances are not taken into account," the former Porto boss continued. “Because of my age and my lack of a professional playing background, I could never be dictatorial. “I therefore let the players have a certain amount of input into the decisions regarding the way we play and the way the team is run."

"I encourage the players to participate in the decisions affecting their professional lives. You must build a two-way relationship, though as coach I make the final decisions and if I have to upset a couple of people, then so be it. "My age was never an issue because I started coaching when I was very young.

"It is something that has always generated debate, but I have no problem with it because the players always accepted the position of the manager and they seemed to enjoy the relationship with someone of their generation."

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre: Kenny Dalglish has money to spend this transfer window

Board member is adamant the club are committed to long-term plan and will not be rushed into the transfer market despite having funds available as they are happy with current squad

Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre has stated there is more money for manager Kenny Dalglish to spend in the transfer market, but has insisted the club are happy with their current squad.
The Reds invested heavily in 2011 spending over £100 million on players such as Andy Carroll, Luis Suarez, Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam, and Ayre says there is more cash to spend if needed. Despite the mass amount of money spent, few of the players have truly lived up to expectations, but Ayre is sure Dalglish is more than content with the squad currently available to him.
Ayre told Sky Sports News: "Money is not an issue. If we need somebody - and there's a player [available] - the manager will get supported whatever he needs. "But that's not the same as saying we will just go spend money because we have got it or just because we can.” Ayre has insisted Liverpool are sticking to a plan for the future, and although money is available, they will not rush into making any decisions unless a good deal is available.

He added: "It is about the long-term plan of where they want the squad and where they want the team to be, that's not about any particular transfer window - it's about continuing to improve. "If an opportunity presents itself I am sure we will look at it, but right now it's about keeping going and improving and getting the best out of what we have got. "We have got some great players in a great squad of players and they are focused on pushing that forward."

Take note Arsenal, Barcelona, AC Milan & Manchester United - Ajax's Christian Eriksen has plenty of potential, but is not ready for a bigger club just yet

The Denmark international is one of the most sought after players around in Europe, but he will have to step up his game in order to earn a big money move

Although Christian Eriksen has only two years of first team experience under his belt at Ajax, the attacking midfielder has already attracted the interest of some of Europe's biggest clubs, as AC Milan, Arsenal, Barcelona and Manchester United are all believed to be keeping tabs on the playmaker.

The interest from England and Spain is nothing new though for the gifted midfielder, as he already underwent trial periods at Barcelona and Chelsea at the age of 16. However, neither of the two sides eventually decided to add Eriksen to their youth academy, and he eventually left Odense for Ajax in January 2009.

The Middelfart-born youngster did not waste any time to make an impact in Amsterdam, and was promoted to the first team barely 12 months after his arrival. Then, head coach Martin Jol was thoroughly impressed with Eriksen and the attacking midfielder officially debuted in the Eredivisie match against NAC on January 17, 2010.

He has since made a total of 61 league appearances for the Dutch champions, and has developed into one of the Godenzonen's undisputed star players.

Despite his status as a key player at Ajax, the talented midfielder is by no means indispensable just yet, and Eriksen still has plenty of room for improvement.

There's no arguing that the Denmark international has had some brilliant moments in the 2011-12 campaign, most notably the exquisite nutmeg of Vitesse's Davy Propper in August, and his near perfect showing versus Roda in October.

However, the 19-year-old has only netted a meagre four times in 18 Eredivisie appearances, and his finishing still leaves much to desire.

Ajax have a history of No.10s who score on a regular basis, largely thanks to their attacking footballing philosophy. Players such as Jari Litmanen, Rafael van der Vaart and Wesley Sneijder all took advantage of this positive style of play and had seasons where they scored at least 15 league goals in Amsterdam. Eriksen, on the other hand, has hit the back of the Eredivisie net just 10 times since moving to the Amsterdam ArenA.

His average goal scoring record can partially be attributed to the fact that he has had to play off several different forwards, rather than one permanent striker with whom he can develop a certain understanding, although Eriksen has to look at himself as well.

The midfielder often loses his calm in dangerous positions, and on too many occasions opts for the long range strike instead of taking his time to get closer to the goal. Additionally, Eriksen now and again seems to prefer artistry over efficiency.

The midfielder is arguably Ajax's most talented player, but occasionally seems too shy to impose himself. At the age of 19 he is still only a baby in footballing terms, but to completely fulfil his potential he will have to become much more dominant.

Too often do the Ajax fans see a less talented player in possession in an area where Eriksen should have the ball at his feet. However, rather than make his presence known and demand the ball, the sympathetic Dane tends to adapt to the situation and tries to create space for the lesser gifted team-mate. As much as this humbleness is a respectable characteristic, Eriksen will have to change this aspect of his game, both for his own benefit, and for that of the team.

There is little doubt about Eriksen's immense potential, and his performances with both the national side and Ajax suggest that he has a bright future ahead of him.

But, he is not ready to make the next step in his career just yet.

Eriksen would be wise to stay with Ajax for at least one more full season, before eventually moving abroad to follow in the footsteps of illustrious compatriots such as the Laudrup brothers.

Merseyside Police have arrested a man over an alleged racist gesture during the FA Cup tie between Liverpool and Manchester United.

Match Commander, Chief Superintendent Jon Ward, had earlier confirmed footage of the game was being reviewed following the emergence of a still image on Twitter.

A 59-year-old man has now been taken to a police station and is undergoing questioning by officers.A statement read: "Merseyside Police can confirm that a 59-year-old man from North Wales, has been arrested this evening following an alleged incident at the LFC vs MUFC match this afternoon. (Saturday, 28 January).

"The man has been taken to a police station, and will be questioned by officers.

"Merseyside Police would like to thank North Wales police and Liverpool Football Club for their assistance with this matter."

The game was expected to be highly charged following an incident involving Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra earlier this season, which saw the Uruguayan banned for eight games for alleged racist abuse of the defender.

Liverpool defeated Sir Alex Ferguson's side 2-1 in the fourth round clash at Anfield on Saturday afternoon, thanks to goals from Daniel Agger and Dirk Kuyt either side of Park Ji Sung's equaliser.
