Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Monday that a committee of inquiry will be set up to investigate the causes of the riot that broke out in Little India on Sunday night.

"The COI will look into the factors that led to the incident and how the incident was handled on the ground. It will also review the current measures to manage areas where foreign workers congregate, whether they are adequate and how they can be improved. MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) will provide more details when ready," he said in a statement.

PM Lee said the riot was an isolated incident arising from the unlawful actions of an unruly mob reacting to a fatal traffic accident.

"The vast majority of foreign workers in Singapore are law-abiding workers. They contribute to our economy, working hard to earn a living and support their families back home. We must not allow this bad incident to tarnish our views of the foreign worker community here," he said.

He also offered his deepest condolences to the family of Mr Sakthivel Kumaravelu, who was killed in the traffic accident that preceded the riot, and urged Singaporeans to remain calm and continue with their daily lives.

"Support our frontline officers in the Home Team, and share any leads you may have with the Police. Let us stay united as one people as we deal with this unfortunate incident, and keep Singapore a safe and orderly country," he said.

Police have arrested 27 people in connection with the riot, which was triggered by the death of Mr Kumaravelu, a 33-year old Indian worker, who was run over by a private bus at the junction of Race Course Road and Hampshire Road.

In an update at 4pm on Monday, the police said that of these 27 people, 24 are Indian nationals, 2 are Bangladeshi nationals and one is a Singaporean Permanent Resident.

As at 12pm on Monday, 22 police officers and five auxilliary police officers have sought treatment at the hospital, the police added.

The officers sustained injuries and lacerations and all of them have since been discharged from hospital.

I believe the security forces were shocked beyond belief when they arrived and saw the mammoth mob!!! They drove right into the mob and were quickly surrounded by angry rioters. There was no way they could fight the mob. Unless they drew their firearms and started shooting. This would lead to more casualties and more deaths!!!

They did the right thing. Withdrew and let the rioters had their fun. Fight another day. Look at the rampaging and angry mob - they were surrounding the buses and the vehicles in all directions. They were dead ducks. If they fought, they would be killed.

So to avoid an already bad situation turning tragic, our security men did the best thing at that moment: gracefully withdrew, excercing restraint and let the riot burn itself out.....

And we will follow up with OUR ACTION....peacefully, diplomatically but efficiently. Wake Up Singapore!!!

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said all its injured personnel have been discharged from hospital.

The release said that of the 60 personnel deployed for the Little India accident between a private bus and a pedestrian on Sunday evening, 12 had sustained injuries such as lacerations on the face and cuts on their hands. It was earlier reported that the SCDF personnel were sent to the emergency area of Tan Tock Seng hospital early Monday morning, where they mostly received outpatient treatment.

"The injuries sustained were due to projectiles hurled at them while they were carrying out their duties at the incident site," said the statement. "All of them have since been discharged from the hospital."

The release said that the nine SCDF vehicles that were badly damaged consisted of three ambulances, a red rhino, a fire engine and four support vehicles. One of the ambulances was completely burnt at the incident site, while the remaining damaged vehicles had "varying degree of damages such as smashed windshields, and scratches and dents to the doors and frame".

"Notwithstanding this incident, we would like to assure the public that there is no disruption to the provision of our fire-fighting, rescue and emergency ambulance services," said the news release. "The morale and spirit of SCDF personnel remains high and committed towards our life saving mission."

In a separate press release on Monday, the police said that 22 police officers and five auxiliary police officers sought treatment at the hospital. All of them have since been discharged from the hospital.

Police have classified the traffic incident between the private bus and the pedestrian as Causing Death by Negligent Act, and the subsequent incident as Rioting with Dangerous Weapons. The driver is assisting Traffic Police with investigations into the traffic incident.

Police have arrested 27 people, aged between 23 and 45, in connection with the rioting incident. Of them, 24 are Indian nationals, two are Bangladeshi nationals and one is a Singaporean Permanent resident.

The press release said 16 police vehicles were damaged in the rioting incident. The damaged vehicles have been removed from Race Course Road and Hampshire Road and the affected roads were opened at 6.45am.

Members of the public with any information about the riot are advised to submit them via www.spf.gov.sg/iwitness and www.spf.gov.sg/CrimeStopper.

Facts were also laid out in the post in order to clarify certain rumours which have been circulating online. They said that police officers "displayed maximum restraint and did not fire any weapon throughout the incident".

"This also prevented the incident from escalating further," said the police.

The police also resolved the situation and had it under control within an hour.

The PM should explain to the country the inefficiency of the police officers who first arrived on the scene and failed to handle the mob before the situation deteriorated to the extent that govt vehicles were being torched..

Many questions need to be asked especially on how the SPF and their officers conduct themselves during their daily line of duty..

Do they need to wait for instructions from their top brass before executing their duties?

Where is the initiative of these front line officers?

If they need to wait for orders, then the next time there is another riot and people dying on the streets , these gong gong officers will still be talking to their superiors on their mobile phones and walkie talkies waiting for the next instruction from their senior officers..

The Ah Tiong bus drivers strike was called isolated, now this Ah Neh riot is isolated. Next Pinoy riot will also be isolated.

Foreigners are running the country. Even the police is afraid of them. That's why the sinkee bus driver is charged even when there is NO proper investigation done.

Next group of shit stirrer will be Pinoys

Yeah, come on you Pinoys, I'll be counting on you.

Just imagine that someone had insulted Pacquiao and the Haiyan typhoon victims, then go crazy at Lucky Plaza and ION Orchard.

Grab a police officer, strip him, crucify him then parade him around.

Pinoy Pride!
