Forest fires happen some parts of year, with authorities doing their bit. Not resident in CNX, but frequent visitor past 3 years. And I have not been smogged (lucky?) :p

Ok I think I mentioned before in the forum somewhere about this haze thingy in CM. Anyway here's what I know. Happens every year in Feb/Mar period due to farmers burning. CM is a city in a valley surrounded by mountains. So when burning occurs the smog could be trapped in the valley. But most of the time smog is cleared quickly because its a big valley and easily cleared so its not an issue really. However there may come a time like that bloody "once in 50 years" situation where weather depression occurs with the burning and that's when smog gets stuck in the valley. This situation doesn't happen so often.
Similarly when media reports such news all we see are negativity but there are much more positive things in CM than the haze to report, like there are much more happy days in CM than haze days. Like when the government attacked the red shirts and you saw burning of buildings, hey its just that 2 streets but it looked like the whole Bangkok is burning, life for my goes on.
Another thing you should take note of about CM is the heat in Songkrang perod thats in April, outside heat is easily 40 degC, Bangkok during that period is hot but still about 2 degrees cooler. Hell we all have aircon so this is not a problem.

Chanced on this from Nation, on quaint Kwan Riam floating market off Bkk. Eons ago, I did touristy thingy with the most popular floating market (forgot name), left with impression that the brochures glossed over it. But this deserves a re-look. Liked the old fashioned kopi tin-cans, beats the damned plastic holders anytime :p

since like this thread is going a bit monotone, why not lets start off with some less-visited-by-tourist place of interest? personally for me, i am sick and tired of going to POI like chatuchak market (btw, i only been there twice), temple of the jade buddha (or king's palace), sleeping buddha (Wat Po) and silom market (the one with lots of agogo bars).
how about places that deserves a mention? i believe chon, YY, joe and a few others have a lot to mention. let me start first..
i'm sure people had read and went to ampawa, one of the largest floating market in thailand (and the one that is most frequented by foreign variety show casters), but however, do u know that near the floating market is a small temple that is called the tree temple? it is a bit special because there is a tree growing out/on top of the temple, making it looked like the ruins of Angkor wat. those wanting good luck in 4ds will go there and pray...
btw, ampawa is also famous for fireflies...

I live in Bangkok. I'm not familiar with the north as I rarely go there but will travel there more as just set up warehouse distribution centers in Chiangmai and Phitsonuluk which will be ready these 2 months. I'm more familiar with Bangkok and surrounding provinces and Isaan area.

All this while, past 10 years frequent travels to LOS on work (and pleasure:p), I've yet to cast my shadow on famed Chatuchak market ...so you did better
As for touristy Patpong, just be wary of the touts at night market trying to sell you porn, viagra and tiger shows upstairs (big scam). But there's an interesting alley other end (Suriwongse?) with gay bars like Dick Bar etc ...beat a hasty retreat once when 1 heshe batted her eyelids at me
On off the beaten track, we had Roti's journey up north Chiangrai and baanok (like locals so).
Once I did Mae Nak's shrine in soi 77 (and soi 7) Phra Kanong ... but I'm definitely not Mario:o

Psst, in my cherry trip to krungthep 10 years back ...stayed at ex Hilton (now Nai Lert Park, SwissHotel) off Wireless. There was this shrine (some link to Mae Nak?) with big phallic thing and tree in grounds/car park ..popular with ladies possibly for fertility? Or punish wayward hubbies?
i think this is one dish that u can find at many place selling at such low price. but i tried it in kanchanaburi.
it was 10 baht chicken rice. (10 baht approx 40 cent). ok the portion is around half a bowl of rice, but the chicken meat is almost the same as any standard set in sg. so u order 2 plate of chicken rice, u are full.
if i'm not mistaken, bangkok itself has another place that sells 10baht noodles. order 20 bowls, u get a free 1.5L of pepsi. place i forgot where already.
