10,000 Fans Turn Up To Celebrate Medal Win With Singapore Paddlers

MP Lee Bee Wah deserves full credit for bringing Singapore it's first medal in 40 years.

Singapore's paddlers celebrate Olympic medal win with fansBy Patwant Singh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 30 August 2008 1637 hrs

SINGAPORE: With the recent controversy over management issues in the team put firmly behind them, it was celebration time in the heartlands for Singapore's Beijing Olympic silver medallists.

A strong crowd, carrying placards, turned up at Ang Mo Kio's FairPrice Xtra a good hour before the arrival of Singapore's Olympian paddlers.

Some fans were rewarded with an autographed poster.

Others behind the players were also given their due recognition by FairPrice who sponsored the celebrations.

Among them was team manager Antony Lee, who was moved by the accolade given by Ng Ser Miang, vice-president of the Singapore National Olympic Council.

Lee, who spent little time with his 5-month-old child in the preparations leading up to the Beijing Olympics, received a gift of milk powder from the supermarket chain.

Also honoured was Singapore's first Olympic medallist, Tan Howe Liang, who won a silver in the 1960 Games. He was acknowledged as the inspiration for Singapore's medal quest.

President of the Singapore Table Tennis Association Lee Bee Wah was given a pair of running shoes - a reflection of the the big shoes she has to fill in building on the team's Olympics success.

Mr Ng said the recent controversy involving the table tennis team has been a blessing in disguise, because they can learn valuable lessons from this incident as they prepare for their next big challenge, the 2012 Olympic Games.

He said it gave the National Sports Associations "something to ponder on how we should really do team-building and resolve issues first."

After the weekend celebrations, the paddlers will have to prepare for another competition - the Women's World Cup starting in Kuala Lumpur next week.

Just read today's Sunday Times (31st August 2008) and I quote:

".........The trio, who bagged the women's team silver medal at the Beijing Olympic Games, were greeted by loud cheers from the 300 fans at the Olympic celebration and autograph session at Ang Mo Kio Hub's FairPrice Xtra yesterday morning."

Somehow the crowd of 300 differs from that reported by CNA of 10,000.

But then again, if you include the number passerby outside Fairprice Xtra who were going to work or the market/hawker centres, the aeroplanes and their passengers that flew overhead, the MRT train and their passengers that passes by, the vehicular traffic with their drivers and passengers passing by etc...........you would probably be able to reconcile to the CNA number of 10,000.

So much for your factual reporting, CNA . Keep it up !

AMK Hub is not a very big place, the carpark is also badly designed.

If there was a 10k crowd, then AMK ave three would have been thronged by people causing masssive jam right up to thomson. 10000 means a election rally that WP gathered last GE near the market.

my friend told me the crowd seeing the PRC girls was about 100 mostly students and RC and CCC people, to be exact, teck ghee PAP quarter is just opposite AMK Hub. PAP grassroots members are there to support also.

CNA dogs could be telling lies, but why? What is point of doing that?

Yea, a reality check and a bit of common sense will tell anyone the maximum capacity crowd that Fairprice Xtra can hold at any one time.

It just goes to show why our local reporters and local media are struggling with their professionalism to remain at the bottom of world ranking .

There is no future for true journalism in sinkapore as long as PAP is still kicking.

Why these reporters want to learn the North-korean way of reporting?
When PAP is gone someday, they still need to go on, and from their rendition, they feel that they should disappear if PAP is gone. This is not patriotism but poisoning sinkapor to a slow death.COLOR]

Hold your horses! everyone, just checked CNA website at 1945hrs, today. Patwant Singh in his dispatch at 1637hrs on 30/8/08 did not mention a crowd of 10,000. The only figure he wrote was 100 fans seeking autographs. So my question is, who was lying? Someone ought to email Mr.Singh.

Maybe they should introduce a module known as Basic counting 101 to the CNA reporters.

Cheers

Correct. Just checked the website of CNA, no mention of the crowd of 10,000.Wonder where "Clinton666" (who initiated this thread) retrieved the information in the first place.

The chat was therefore based on incorrect information provided.

It now remains for me to offer a sincere apology to Patwant Singh and CNA and to rescind all the comments made abt them. Lessons learnt....verify the authencity of the source of information next time round.

You all kenna sabo by Clinton666.

He copy and paste from Channelnewsasia, but add two extra zeros.

"Some 10000 fans were rewarded with an autographed poster."

He then edit by deleting the "10000", some time later. But he cannot change the title.

I believe they are probably exaggerating it to foreign audiences to make the event look good. This is silly and not only no but insults intelligence. LBW would like it so no one is blowing anything out of proportion.

Cheers.
