PAP Race Card Politics makes a comeback

Why do you think that Old Man reacted so viscerally to Viswa Sasidharan about retaining special rights for Malays? They are doing on the quiet.

There may be a more Machiavellian motive to be sure. Like the potential for trouble-making from the govt in the north if the Malays' interests are really hurt due to to baggage from the merger split. We live in a sea of Muslim countries. Not a coastal city in China. But the PAP doesnt want to get started on that again.

You took a chuckle out of me.Sorry, could not help laughing at your suggestions.

There are millions more ethnic Chinese living in Muslim dominated Malaysia and Indonesia.About 14 millions or so.Yet,PAP could not attract them to relocate here.So much so that PAP is happy with the county bumpkins of peasant stock from China as our future citizens.

After Sukarno ambition to annex all of Malaysia into his Nusantara....there was never an attempt by neither Malaysia nor Indonesia to annex Singapore nor play racial politics. It's almost half a century now and Malaysian politicians are more interested to contain their races than interfere with ours.Typical example being PKMS which is actually veiled UMNO--totally in limbo.

Yes,being surrounded by a bigger neighbor is always a danger. But it helps when their own house is in disorder.Only when they grow economical muscles will they start flexing.Just like China now claiming the entire South China Sea.

Nice-Gook also did not mention that many of the Chinese-born then had lived in Singapore / Malaya most of their lives. With the 'liberation' of mainland China in 1949, returning there was not a viable option. David Marshall's act was rationalizing the de facto status of the Chinese population here, as well as granting citizenship to otherwise stateless people.

Not exactly right there. The way you have put it demonises David Marshall. He was after all trying to prepare for internal government, and you can't have it if you dont start making preps for taking over from the British masters.

So DM was doing something totally for Singapore. What PAP had done with their FT policy is anathema to us.

What a seditious remark by that halfbreed! to me, it smacks of racialism. He was obviously referring to the Singapore Chinese, who is the majority. He also implies that Chinese who are against immigrants may turn against the local minorities, namely the Malay, Indian or Eurasian community. But where is the relevance? is this an anti-Chinese remark? Coming from a full minister and a qualified eye doctor, it is most unbecoming and he is supposed to be a top debater during his university days. The irony is that he is half Chinese (his mother is Chinese married to an Indian and he himself also married a local Chinese). Is he suggesting that his mother and wife are capable of turning against him if they should one day disagree with the immigrant policy?

if any ordinary Singaporean, regardless of his/her race, were to utter similar or related words in a public forum, seminer or even at the Speakers Corner, he/she can be detained under the ISA. Where is the justice?

Seriously when you see these interracial marriages where it's indian man marrying a wife from another race the wife's culture and everything is totally wiped out. Look at half breed himself. He's half chinese and half indian yet look at his name there's no trace of chinese in it. What's an even bigger joke is that he married a chinese so his kids themselves are even more chinese than indian but i bet they probably don't know much chinese. No pt talking about this mother i bet she gave up all her culture and wanted to become keling ever since she married vivian's dad. In fact there are many indians that hope to do that by marrying some chinese woman and then hoping to indianize their entire family and their mixed breed kids could marry more chinese and become more chinese genetically but still only identify as indian but they won't be accepted by pure indians. This is of course super racist but acceptable since it's only racist if chinese culture is practiced.

Btw you don't see this sort of thing in other interracial marriages. Take ivy singh lim. She's mixed breed herself and she married a chinese man obviously but she keeps her singh surname. She's not ivy lim and the indian influence is still strong in her despite marrying a chinese man. I can bet she forces her husband to become more indian.

I think you should research this matter deeper.

Converting from Chinese nationality to Singaporean was not a straightforward option than.In fact, the one who most objected was the premier of China Zhou Enlai. He insisted that though China borns would become Singaporeans but they still retain the right to return to China. And David Marshall accepted those terms.

What does it implies?

It simply means in the eyes of China, any China born residing outside China are still their sons and daughters.

Now,you should not club Singapore and Malaya together. As far as the federated and no federated Malaya was concerned...the Malays as Bumis did not want either the Chinese or Indians as their citizens---it doesn't matter whether born in Malaya or otherwise. But the British who brought them there had a responsiblity.Hence they negotiated.

And even in the Malaya's first election Tunku Abdul Rahman won overwhelmingly with Malay candidates. But made a compromise later to give about 1 million citizenship to Chinese.Hence the social contract.

I don't see the point.

Today the Malays are far worse than ever.Totally submerged among the new variety of races PAP brought in.To the extend you see and hear Pinoy more than a local Malay on the street or in our daily dealings. And that PAP had gone so far even to recruit parking wardens in China ;taking over practically all the measly jobs Malays performed.

Malays today are totally and completely obliterated in every sense in Singapore's society.Only the existence of Malay MPs and signs in Malay in public places reminds us that there is still such thing as Malay.

Hence,I simply don't buy that PAP is sorry for what it's doing to the Malays.

I see that you are hanging out mostly in lucky plaza i see local malays everywhere. Every 3rd or 4th person i see in sg happens to be malay and i wouldn't mistake them for a pinoy.

To those who are convinced of the fear factor that the Malays are always awaiting to swallow them. Here is some factual history.

Before there was Malaya and Malaysia the peninsular was known as Tanah Melayu, or Malay Land. Through treaties signed by the Rulers of the Malay States of the Peninsular the British acquired the right to rule the Malay States. These treaties obviously recognized and legitimized the States as Malay States. No one disputed this. Initially the peoples living in the States were divided into indigenous Malays and aborigines who were subjects of the Malay rulers and foreign guests (chinese and indians)who were not subjects of the rulers. There were no citizenship or documents about citizenship status as in most countries.

When Japan conquered the Malay States and the colonies of the Straits Settlements, the Chinese felt insecure as the Japanese were their historical enemies. Many Chinese formed and joined guerilla forces and disappeared into the jungle. When Japan surrendered the Chinese guerillas came out and seized many police stations in the interior and declared that they were the rulers of the country. They seized many people, Chinese and Malays and executed a number of them.Malay villagers retaliated by killing the Chinese in the rural areas. Tension rose and a Sino-Malay war was only averted because of the arrival of British forces. But the ill feeling and animosity between the two races remained high.

It was in this tensed situation that the British proposed the Malayan Union which would give the "guests" the right of citizenship as indistinguishable from that of the Malays. The Malays rejected the Malayan Union and its citizenship proposal. They forced the British to return to the status quo ante in a new Federation of Malaya.Only Chinese who were British subjects in the colonies of the Straits Settlements were eligible to become citizens in this new Federation. Naturally the Malay citizens far outnumbered the Chinese Malayan citizens. Chinese leaders appealed to the British, who then persuaded the UMNO President, Dato Onn Jaafar to propose to open UMNO to all races. This proposal was rejected by the other UMNO leaders and Dato Onn had to resign.

The British kept up the pressure for the Malays to be more liberal with citizenship for non-Malays.Tunku Abdul Rahman, the President of UMNO decided on a coalition with MCA (Malaysian Chinese Association) and the MIC (Malaysian Indian Congress). In the 1955 elections to the Federal Legislative Assembly, since there were very few constituencies with Chinese or Indian majorities, the MCA and MIC partners had to put up candidates in Malay majority constituencies after UMNO undertook not to contest in these constituencies but to support MCA Chinese and MIC Indian candidates instead.Such was the support of the Malays for the MCA and MIC alliance candidates that they won even against Malay candidates from PAS. The MCA and MIC candidates all won. Only UMNO lost one constituency against PAS.

The Tunku as Chief Minister of a self-governing Federation of Malaya then decided to go for independence. The British continued to insist on citizenship rights for the Chinese and Indians as a condition for giving independence. To overcome British resistance to independence and to gain the support of the Chinese and Indians, the Tunku decided to give one million citizenship to the two communities based purely on residence. One notable new citizen was (Tun) Leong Yew Koh, a former general in the Chinese National Army who was later appointed Governor of Malacca.

It was at this stage that the leaders of the three communal parties who had formed the Government of self-governing British Federation of Malaya, discussed and reached agreement on the relationship between the three communities in an independent Federation of Malaya. It was to be a quid pro quo arrangement. In exchange for the one million citizenships the non-Malays must recognise the special position of the Malays as the indigenous people. Certain laws such as the pre-eminence of Islam as the state religion, the preservation of Malay reserve land, the position of the Malay Rulers and Malay customs and the distribution of Government jobs were included in the understanding.

For their part the Chinese and Indian leaders representing their parties and communities demanded that their citizenship should be a right which could not be annulled, that they should retain their language, religion and culture, that as citizens they should have political rights as accorded to all citizens. Thus although Malay is to be the National Language, Chinese and Tamil can be used freely and in the Chinese and Tamil schools. In no other country has there been a similar provision. Even the most liberal countries do not have this constitutional guarantee.

A quota was fixed for the Malayan Civil Service wherein the Malays would get four posts for every one given to Chinese or Indians. However it was recognized that the professional post would be open to all races as it was never thought possible there would be enough Malays to take up these posts. The result was that in the early years of independence there were more non-Malays in Division 1 than Malays.

Before these the Malay States were feudal with the Malay Rulers enjoying near absolute power. Only the elites played a role in State politics. The Malay subjects had no political rights at all. Certainly the guests had no say in politics. Even the Chinese and Indian British citizens had no say though they may be appointed as Municipal or Legislative Councillors.

Hi there. Boring thread. Race thread no longer works as SGP has been divided by LKY and as all melting pot societies go, money and power as well as xenophobia based on nationality binds the crap in the pot. Stir it but to no avail. The major races are very clear in their history who caused the racial division. The older generation with their racial xenophobia are irrelevant. LKY and dogs has a problem of thinking they are the only people thinking and that everyone else are daft with no brain abilities. That is why state propaganda media is losing total credibility and viewership as they keep hooting about only they can think. So wrong. People are a million times smarter than you and you can drone like the uneducated streetside cheats of yesteryear. It is over.

I think the Race Factor will always feature in the politics of not only Malaysia but Indonesia and Singapore as well.

As per discussed, I agreed with Nice-gook that the Japanese had played a very important and crucial role in arousing Malay nationalism and certain anti-chinese sentiment during their occupation of Malaya, especially at the end period of 1944-45.

During the war, the Japanese saved their harshest and most cruel torture for the Chinese community in Malaya and Singapore. The oppression of the Japanese especially towards the Chinese led to many chinese fleeing into the jungles to join the MPAJA (under the Malayan Communist Party) to take up guerilla warfare against the Japanese. This pit them directly not only with the Japanese but Malay informers & security forces working with the Japanese. The Japanese administration also aroused Malay nationalism on Malayan independence, on British colonialism and on the Chinese immigrants in Malaya. In fact, Japanese officers encouraged the Malay villagers to fight the chinese once they left, thus continuing their historic animosity and hatred against the chinese to the hands of the Malays.

As a result, the usual general cordiality between the Chinese and Malays took a turn for the worse with the Japanese fanning anti-chinese sentiments esp in the rural areas. When the Japanese surrendered in 1945, these chinese guerillas came out from their jungles and took revenge on rural malay villagers for suspicions of aiding the Japanese during the war years. In Cheah boon keng book (Red Star over Malaya), he documented narrations of how the Malay villagers used Silat and even black magic to fight against these chinese guerillas. For the many months after the Japanese surrender, there were widespread Malay-Chinese clashes in the rural areas of Malaya.

Even today, RTM still do dramas documenting the communist actrocities against the Malays during their National Day programmes.

The Japanese has successfully aroused Malay anger against the Chinese and even today after so many years of independence, occasional chinese-malay hostility still persisited...thanks to the Japanese anti-chinese legacy.

This piece of history where a benevolent royalty who encouraged Chinese migration and paid with his life and the entire royal heritage wiped out was never forgotten by the Malays.

It is despicable the extent to which VB will stoop to protect his party's FT policies. He's trying to get people at large to buy the idea that any anti-FT sentiment will hurt the local races too so as to stop us from feeling that way. But what this fucking bastard will never realise, as they all dont, is that those who are anti-FT are a united front who have become anti-PAP becos of the FTs. The PAP is trying dsesperately to save itself.

in reality, he typifies the PAP person. out of touch with the ground, arrogant and believing that they can hoodwink the people into believing in whatever they say. Steve Jobs was guilty of this, those around him called this the reality distortion field.

I kept quiet about Viv B For few days thinking if he was wrongly quoted. A President Scholar and as you pointed out a full cabinet minister and a member of a well respected profession.

he knew what he was saying and how it was going to be interpreted, even before he said it. it was not a slip of the tongue but a cunning and devious ploy to create division and arouse racial sentiments. LHL, since he should be aware of public sentiments regarding this comment, needs to get the ISD on this. Else, like you mentioned, the race card is back in our politics. If LHL does nothing, then the PAP has no right in the future to strike at any opposition when the same card is played.

Seriously when you see these interracial marriages where it's indian man marrying a wife from another race the wife's culture and everything is totally wiped out. Look at half breed himself. i don't know much about the aftermath of other interracial marriages, but i will take your word for it. all i know is this guy is implying that other races need to be weary of the chinese majority here. If this is not anti-chinese, i don't know what is. i would be very surprised if none of the chinese ministers take him to task for his racist remarks. Seems like LHL is losing control of his ministers, they are running amok and spewing rubbish to antagonise singaporeans.

Imo, the comment made by Ong about being told by the ex RI boys that there was no test when there was, is
almost as bad as the remarks made by Vivian.

If he doesn't name the actual people who supposedly gave him that wrong piece of information, he is essentially
making a generalisation that some ex RI guys lied to him so that he would not study for the test. Whereas that kind of
behaviour apparently would not happen in Maris Stella.

So Ong Ye Kung, who were those ex RI boys who told you there was no test when there was?

First, why would SINDA Indians would want to hear from a half Indian who may have no inkling about Indianess?
Secondly Indians discriminate between themselves...in this instance North and South.A divide which even India cannot bridge. This is the major bug among them and not between races. Not because racism never exist between races but local Indians do not require Vivian to tell them about it.And many more.

My bet is that Vivian wanted to warn local Indians not to encourage xenophobia since it can bite them back. But he phrased it wrongly. What was meant to be a warning to local Indians turned racist against the majority race.

Nice-Gook IMO, you are spot on about the veiled warning..I have many local SG born/bred Indian (in this context I will refer to even those whose forefathers hailed from what is now known as Pakistan/Bangladesh/Sri Lanka) friends who think likewise..many of them are feeling the effects of the FT importation of the PAP Govt..in their opinion Viv B was telling (read directing) them not to join the so called "Anti-FT bandwagon"..
From my observation the PAP are aware that the social ill-effects due to the PAP Govt's mass importation of so called "cheaper better faster" FTs is a unifying factor for ALL Singaporeans (regardless of creed or religion) which will eventually lead to the downfall of the PAP Govt someday. Hence, the Race Card is being used to contain the situation as aptly put by Scroobal
However ask the majority of local born/bred SG Indian about what they think of VB and many will tell you they don't give a fuck about what he has to say and are of the same opinion with, I dare say, the majority of Singaporeans regarding the PAP's FT policies...

That is my hunch.

That Vivian actually gave a veiled warning to local Indians.

But instead tripped over his choice of words.

Because no other race is more acutely divided than Indians by the new wave of foreign imports from India who have swarmed our island.

And it's also true that the local Indians fuck care who da heck Vivian is.

But there is mark difference between India Indians and China Chinese being now imported. No,I am not talking about racial.I am talking about their social standing.PAP gives preference to N.Indians of upper middle class and above. No,it has nothing to do with their caste either.Whereas PRC are imported into bonded slavery of sorts.Sure, there are some scholar materials but the bulk of PRC are farmers from rural China ,who only have their bodies to sell.

It would be interesting to know the reasons.

Hello racist with a racist nick. Let's take a look at this. Look at how you wrote this here: Thus although Malay is to be the National Language, Chinese and Tamil can be used freely and in the Chinese and Tamil schools. In no other country has there been a similar provision. Even the most liberal countries do not have this constitutional guarantee. What you're insinuating here is that somehow the malays are so benevolent to actually give non malay races their own languages and schools and that somehow this doesn't take place in other countries. This is obviously a big piece of Bull shit. From the very post that i am quoting now why in the hell did the malays allow this for the indians and the chinese? Cos they are benevolent? Of course not. From the very same post that i have quoted here.

Read the part i highlighted and made big. Why were the chinese and indians allowed their own schools and free usage of their respective languages? To gain their support to get independence from the British! Mind you non malays are discriminated in malaysia even today but that's ok cos only chinese discrimination is an outrage. The dishonest way in which you worded it shows what a snake you are. You're making it sound like the govt of malaysia is so benevolent unlike even the most liberal countries in the world. Well i have already proven to you that's BS.

Let's address the remainder of your claim. You claim even the most liberal of countries don't allow minorities to do what they do in malaysia? The last time i checked the US, Canada, UK among other countries allowed non white ppl to speak their own languages and they have not just chinese or indian schools but schools of other ethnicities.

All in all you're just trying to make it seem like malays discrimination of chinese is ok or to lessen it. Why? So that somehow in your sick twisted mind it can emplify so called chinese discrimination in this country. This country where you're not judged due to your race, where ppl don't harrass you or don't rob you cos of your race. While in malaysia a chinese would be targetted for robbery by malay robbers.

The Japanese were not be entirely blamed for the dire state of Sino/Malay relations and neither the pre and post war era a watershed for the worsening racial tensions.

This piece of history where a benevolent royalty who encouraged Chinese migration and paid with his life and the entire royal heritage wiped out was never forgotten by the Malays.

WTF! This further proves you are a racist. Of course the japanese aren't the one's promoting it. What you're trying to insinuate here is that the chinese are somehow genetically racist and were actually the ones that somehow provoked the malays to discriminate them today.

Now like a bloody snake you're writing that somehow the chinese reacted that way to this malay royal for no reason.

In case you forgot here it is: In 1834 Raja Busu imposed a 10% royalty on all tin mined. That set an angry reaction from Chinese miners, who were almost 100% Hakkas and their Chinese financiers based in Malacca. Oh yes it's perfectly fine for him to impose these type of taxes on them cos hey they are chinese so they deserve to be taxed. Yeah he sure was benevolent indeed. He offered the chinese to migrate there cos he cared about them. No he wanted to develop the tin mines and only the chinese are the hard working ones that can do it. Following your logic i can say the PAP govt is very benevolent to the bangalas by inviting them here to build our buildings. But no that's not what's taught. It's taught that we're supposed to actually respect them but of course if they were chinese building the buildings no need to respect them. What's even worse is he tried to further impost royalties on the tin they mined themselves. Who wouldn't be angry? It's very easy to see your opinion on this. Suppose it was some chinese royalty that invited malay or indians to mine the tin and he then imposed 10% royalty and was killed i'm sure you would say he deserved it. Plain obvious you would.

Lastly this is the most ridiculous part

Negeri Sembilan was ‘annexed’ after the Chinese massacred all the Malays, including Raja Busu and his entire family, in Lukut in 1834.

Wow 1834 was longer than 150 yrs ago and you have the gall to mention it? Btw why did you have to go back to such a long time? Plain obvious cos there were 0 incidents of chinese violence towards malays after that. What's the point of you bringing up such ancient history then? Why to somehow make chinese look like the bad guys and the racists and that they deserve to be discrminated even today for something that happened more than 150 yrs ago.

To hell with you. :oIo:

Of course it's anti-chinese and racist but it's ok because in this fucking country only the chinese are ever held to task for making "racist" remarks. You just have to change the races around. Suppose it was a chinese minister that spoke to some tiongs about another race especially the malay one. Instant outrage.

This vivian mixed breed fake keling won't be brought to task. LHL seems to be a closet indian lover who loves to kiss their asses and lick their feet. IN the general public i doubt it would really spark any outrage. There are numerous chinese dogs out there that fawn over other races especially indians and kiss their ass and worship (insanity right?) them like gods. These ppl are fine with it when chinese are being discrminated as long as it doesn't involve them personally. These very same chinese dogs however would be offended if another race suffered "racism" but and you have to take note of this. These chinese dogs will be only be super offended if the supposed offender is a CHINESE. That's right. They will be super offended. Suppose it was a malay minister saying something on the indian community for eg. These chinese dogs wouldn't be that offended unless it happened to be a CHINESE minister saying it then they will be super offended. That's how these chinese dogs act like and in fact i can say that of other races too. It's just 1 more excuse for them to blame chinese ppl for everything wrong in their lives.

Of course with such a mentality in singapore why would vivian even be afraid of making racist statements especially at the chinese since only the chinese can be capable of racism. I can bet ass loong was even grinning at vivian while slobbering at his feet like a dog with its tongue out after hearing of vivian telling the indians to be wary of the chinese reflecting the same mentality as the chinese dogs that kiss the ass of kelings, malays etc.

Tell me if what i write isn't false at all but very very clearly reflects how ppl in sg think.

Viv B followed by commenting that those who are anti-FT might turn on the minorities eventually. This is pure mischief.

This is called divide and conquer. He is good at it. Remember the last GE he played up anti-gay card. He started to divide the people with his remarks and than blamed the division on the people instead of himself. Thereafter he used the same reason to vote for him so that he can cure the problems. Just like PAP knocking down other people wet market and request the people to vote the rebuilt of the wet market via voting for PAP. Sick strategy.
